The Herald’s 2018 All-Area baseball teams

Eds. note: The Player of the Year and All-Area teams were chosen by The Herald sports staff based on coach recommendations, season statistics and first-hand observations.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Brett Gillis, sr., Cascade

Gillis led the Bruins to the Wesco 4A regular-season title with an exceptional season at the plate, on the mound and at shortstop. The senior standout batted .500 with one home run, one triple, 11 doubles and 11 stolen bases. He also posted a 1.25 earned-run average in 44 2/3 innings pitched while recording 64 strikeouts and just 18 walks.

COACH OF THE YEAR

Andrew Watters, Mountlake Terrace

In his 19th season at the helm, Watters guided the Hawks to a 20-9 record and second-place finish in the 2A state tournament — the best state finish in program history. Mountlake Terrace also claimed the 2A baseball academic state title with a combined 3.61 grade-point average.

FIRST TEAM

PITCHERS

Brett Gillis, sr., Cascade

Eric Anderson, sr., Marysville Pilchuck

Anderson posted a 0.94 earned-run average in 59 1/3 innings pitched while recording 64 strikeouts and just 14 walks. He also batted .395 with one home run, two triples, nine doubles and a .592 slugging percentage. The two-way standout helped the Tomahawks claim the 3A Northwest District tournament title and reach the 3A state tournament.

CATCHER

Travis Hagan, sr., Meadowdale

Hagan batted .362 with four home runs and 11 doubles while posting a .549 on-base percentage and .759 slugging percentage. The Seattle University signee threw out nine of 19 potential base stealers. He helped the Mavericks claim the Wesco 3A South title and come within one win of the 3A state tournament.

INFIELDERS

Tommy Dimmock, sr., Meadowdale

Dimmock batted .356 with four home runs, one triple and 12 doubles while posting a .434 on-base percentage and .712 slugging percentage. He also had a 1.59 earned-run average in 44 innings pitched while striking out 66 batters and walking 24. He helped the Mavericks claim the Wesco 3A South title and come within one win of the 3A state tournament.

Conor Bardue, sr., Lake Stevens

Bardue posted a .492 batting average, .593 on-base percentage and .667 slugging percentage. He hit one home run and six doubles.

Jaxsen Sweum, sr., Glacier Peak

Sweum batted .426 with three home runs and seven doubles. He posted a .569 on-base percentage and .722 slugging percentage.

Riley Parker, sr., Glacier Peak

Parker batted .407 with one home run, four triples, nine doubles and a .745 slugging percentage.

OUTFIELDERS

Gavin Rork, sr., Arlington

Rork posted a .440 batting average, .541 on-base percentage and .583 slugging percentage. The Seattle University signee hit four triples and four doubles and stole 22 bases. He helped lead Arlington to an unbeaten record in Wesco 3A play and a spot in the 3A state tournament.

Carter Booth, sr., Jackson

Booth batted .372 with five home runs, three triples and four doubles. The Oregon State University signee posted a .500 on-base percentage and .692 slugging percentage and stole 16 bases. He helped lead the Timberwolves to the 4A Northwest District tournament title and the 4A state quarterfinals.

Scott Schaffer, jr., Glacier Peak

Schaffer batted .382 with three home runs and five doubles. He posted a .419 on-base percentage and .636 slugging percentage.

DESIGNATED HITTER

Colby Phelps, sr., Marysville Pilchuck

Phelps batted .438 with three home runs, eight doubles and a .650 slugging percentage. He helped the Tomahawks claim the 3A Northwest District tournament title and reach the 3A state tournament.

SECOND TEAM

PITCHERS

Aaron Davenport, sr., Cedarcrest

Davenport allowed just two earned runs all season, posting a 0.28 earned-run average in 50 1/3 innings pitched. The University of Hawaii signee recorded 107 strikeouts and just 18 walks, averaging 2.1 strikeouts per inning. He also batted .345 with 11 doubles, a .486 on-base percentage and .545 slugging percentage. Davenport was named the Cascade Conference player of the year.

Cameron Smith, jr., Arlington

Smith posted a 1.69 earned-run average in 58 innings pitched while recording 49 strikeouts and just seven walks. He helped lead Arlington to an unbeaten record in Wesco 3A play and a spot in the 3A state tournament.

CATCHER

Ben Steck, jr., Jackson

Steck batted .397 with two home runs, two triples and six doubles. The Oregon State University commit posted a .566 on-base percentage and .672 slugging percentage. He helped lead the Timberwolves to the 4A Northwest District tournament title and the 4A state quarterfinals.

INFIELDERS

Julian Kodama, sr., Edmonds-Woodway

Kodama batted .358 with three home runs and 10 doubles while posting a .402 on-base percentage and .592 slugging percentage. He also had a 2.28 earned-run average in 40 innings pitched while striking out 60 batters and walking 21. He helped lead the Warriors to the 3A state semifinals.

Ryan Witt, sr., Monroe

Witt posted a .350 batting average, .453 on-base percentage and .516 slugging percentage. He hit one home run, two triples and three doubles. He committed just two errors as an infielder and had a 2.14 earned-run average in 39 1/3 innings pitched.

Will Schafer, sr., Meadowdale

Schafer batted .377 with one triple and 10 doubles while posting a .490 on-base percentage and .532 slugging percentage. He helped the Mavericks claim the Wesco 3A South title and come within one win of the 3A state tournament.

Brandon Main, jr., Shorewood

Main batted .441 with seven doubles, a .519 on-base percentage and .544 slugging percentage.

OUTFIELDERS

Jalil Marinez, sr., Edmonds-Woodway

Marinez posted a .362 batting average, .444 on-base percentage and .492 slugging percentage while hitting two triples and five doubles. He helped lead the Warriors to the 3A state semifinals.

Baily Alvis, sr., Marysville Pilchuck

Alvis batted .373 with three doubles and a .480 on-base percentage. He helped the Tomahawks claim the 3A Northwest District tournament title and reach the 3A state tournament.

Luke Klein, jr., Monroe

Klein posted a .359 batting average, .494 on-base percentage and .500 slugging percentage. He hit two triples and five doubles.

DESIGNATED HITTER

Addison Beckmann, sr., Jackson

Beckman batted .406 with eight doubles and a .554 on-base percentage. He helped the Timberwolves to the 4A Northwest District tournament title and the 4A state quarterfinals.
