Microsoft .NET Core 2.0 is now available to start developing with it at the command line, in a text editor, in Visual Studio 2017 15.3, Visual Studio Code or Visual Studio for Mac. It can be used for production workloads on the hardware or on a cloud, like Microsoft Azure. The .NET Core 2.0 has been established to Azure Web Apps. The biggest improvements done on this version are:

• 6 new platforms supported, including Debian Stretch, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 SP2, and macOS High Sierra.

• RyuJIT is the x86 JIT in .NET Core 2.0

• Implements .NET Standard 2.0

• In a preview, Linux and Windows ARM32 builds are now available.

SDK

• Dotnet restore is now an implicit command.

• .NET Core and .NET Standard projects can reference .NET Framework NuGet packages and projects.

• The .NET Core SDK can be built from source with the source-build repo.

Visual Studio

• Live Unit Testing supports .NET Core

• Code navigation improvements

• C# Azure Functions support in the box

• CI/CD support for containers

Visual Studio users can use .NET Core 2.0 in the latest versions of Visual Studio. The .NET Core 2.0 SDK is to be installed separately for this update.

Using .NET Core 2.0

The .NET Core 2.0 can be started in few minutes, on Windows macOS or Linux.

• Install the .NET Core SDK 2.0.

• Create .NET Core 2.0 apps on the command line or in Visual Studio.

Creating new projects is easy using templates in Visual Studio 2017. New applications can be created at the command line with new dot net.

Upgrading Existing Applications

An existing application can be upgraded to .NET Core 2.0. 

Upgrading Libraries

Updating libraries to .NET Standard 2.0 is not required as .NET Standard 1.x versions are supported forever. Libraries can be created that target .NET Core, but it is not recommended in general scenario because .NET Core libraries can only be used by .NET Core applications not by Dot NET Framework of Xamarin applications.

Dot NET Core SDK Improvements

The .NET Core SDK 2.0 has the following improvements.

• Dotnet Standard NuGet Packages no longer have required dependencies

The all new refactorings added in the version are:

• Resolve merge conflict

• Add parameter (from callsite)

• Add named argument

• Add null-check for parameters

• Generate overrides

• Insert digit-separators into literals

• Convert if-to-switch

• Remove unused variable

• Change base for numeric literals (e.g., hex to binary)

Project System simplifications

The .csproj project file is simplified by removing unwanted elements that were confusing to users. Nodes are now properly organized into categories like NuGet, project-to-project references, SDK, etc.

Docker

Various important improvements were made to .NET Core support for Docker as well:

• Docker latest tag moved to .NET Core 2.0

• Linux ARM32 Docker images are now available.

• Microsoft/dotnet Docker Hub README adopted segmented OS/Arch style

• .NET Core Docker images use multi-arch based tags

• .NET Core 2.0 multi-arch tags now use Debian Stretch

• .NET Core supports Multi-Stage Build.
