Learn to Play: Dweezil Zappa on Varying Pentatonic Riffs

Late last year, we had the opportunity to catch up with Dweezil Zappa during the soundcheck before his Chicago show. He talked with us about his father's improv techniques and how he strives to work them into his own performances. He also gave us a detailed look at his stereo touring rig.

This time around, Dweezil is talking about what first attracts most young players to the guitar in the first place: pentatonic scales. But when players are trying to quicken their pentatonic licks to lightning speeds, they often have to deal with right and left hands that won't cooperate.

In the video above, Dweezil works through some variations on the pentatonic scale that help players to get their hands on the same page. This is only the first of a series of lessons videos Dweezil is doing with us, so keep your eyes peeled for the next installment.
