Looking Up In a World Looking Down

I’m a copywriter – a content manager for that matter. I write blogs and content for a living. And while at one of the biggest content conferences in the world recently, I wanted to cry at the thought of adding another piece of content into the world. I wanted to cry because at my core, I’m an empath who craves real human connection – and yet, I’m living in and contributing to a virtual world of disconnect.

Though we’re seemingly more connected than ever through the incessant checking of our phones and social media, the content we’re consuming is more often than not abbreviated, abridged, superficial nonsense. It’s fake news. It’s click-bait. It’s memes. It’s promotional. It’s celebrity gossip. It’s noise.

It’s not intellectual depth our world so badly needs or raw emotion so many humans crave. And it’s consuming our daily lives. It’s quite literally overshadowing the very idea of real.

Because of this, our society is decaying. We’re living among terrorism, addiction, trafficking and suicide – all of which stem from a severe lack of human connection. We’re living in a world where we don’t look up from the bullshit on our phones for two seconds to make eye contact with a stranger who so desperately needs a reminder they aren’t alone. We’re living in a world where we shudder at the thought of speaking to a stranger who’s likely looking and laughing at the same meme as you right now.

It could be a simple ‘hey’ or crack of a smile you give to a stranger in a public – you know the one – it acknowledges you’re in the same place facing the same minute irritations. It’s these cursory human interactions that can make even the loneliest person in the world feel not so alone for a second.

So when I thought about creating another blog for the sheer sake of ‘creating content,’ I was saddened at the thought that my next piece could be the reason someone missed an opportunity to look up.

So what makes this piece of content different? I’m hoping the difference is that it feels like eye contact. I’m hoping it resonates with you in a meaningful way and begins to fill the void of real. I'm hoping its the start of something. The start of restoring connection.

And, as a copywriter deeply passionate about my trade, I pledge to produce and publish only high quality content for my clients that will differentiate them through the lost art of human connection.

This is my way of looking up in a world looking down.

Sooo glad you posted this beautiful piece! I'll be another to take that pledge. I hope our work doesn't clog the airways and instead attempts to make real connections with readers – with humans!
