Donald Trump to a fallen soldier’s widow: ‘He knew what he signed up for’

On October 4th, four American soldiers will killed in Niger. The story around these fallen soldiers and their deadly mission in Niger has been coming out in bits and pieces – I just read this recent CNN account of what happened that night and it is harrowing. Of the four Americans who were killed in action, three were white men and one was an African-American man, Sgt. La David T. Johnson. Sgt. Johnson’s body wasn’t recovered until 48 hours after the assault, and his last journey home to Florida just happened this week. Donald Trump whined endlessly about how f–king tough his life is now that people expect him to write letters and make calls to gold-star families, plus he blatantly and clearly lied about how he was the only president in history who, like, made calls and wrote letters to the families of fallen soldiers. Well, the U BUM finally called Sgt. Johnson’s pregnant widow. And U BUM has all of the decency and grace of a hemorrhoid.

President Donald Trump allegedly told the widow of Sgt. La David T. Johnson of Miami Gardens, Florida, that “he knew what he signed up for” as she was on her way to pick up his body at a ceremonial homecoming Tuesday. The 25-year-old was one of four US special forces soldiers killed in Niger.

Myeshia Johnson was heading toward Miami International Airport with U.S. Rep Frederica Wilson when Trump called at about 4:45 p.m., just before the soldier’s body arrived, according to the Miami Herald. Wilson, who overheard the call on speakerphone, said Trump’s call lasted only five minutes but left an impact with these words, “He knew what he signed up for… but when it happens it hurts anyway.”

“I think it’s so insensitive. It’s crazy. Why do you need to say that?” Wilson told the Herald. “You don’t say that to someone who lost family, the father, the breadwinner. You can say, ‘I’m so sorry for your loss. He’s a hero.’ I’m livid. [Johnson] can’t even have an open-coffin funeral because his body is so messed up.”

His widow is pregnant with the couple’s third child, which is due in January. They share a 2-year-old son and a 6-year-old daughter. Just minutes after the call, the family were on the tarmac as the husband and father’s body arrived home. Myeshia threw herself over her husband’s casket as she began to sob uncontrollably, according to Local 10 News. Their daughter stood by her mother, standing stoically and with her head held tall. Her baby brother was in the arms of a relative according to the outlet.

Local politicians, police officers and firefighters stood in silence, lining up to honor Johnson for his service. Local 10 News reports Johnson was a former Walmart employee who joined the 3rd Special Forces Group at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

[From People]

“He knew what he signed up for…” That will be the epitaph for every Republican who stands with Donald Trump. They knew what they were doing. They still know. They all got what they paid for: an ignorant, crass, graceless motherf–ker who lacks the ability to be sympathetic or empathetic or even have a modicum of decency. He knew what he signed up for. Can you imagine saying that to a pregnant widow? And what do you want to bet that Trump was a lot more respectful to the families of the white soldiers who were killed in action? I’m being completely f–king serious. Republicans and Trump voters: you knew what you signed up for. You saw the way he treated Khizr Khan and you still f–king voted for this monster.

Trump just tweeted this:

F–k off, U BUM.

He is just despicable. The fact that it’s even easy to believe that he said this as a sitting US President is just baffling. Cue poor Gen. Kelly’s next presser where he reads off a cue card, “President Trump is always respectful to gold star families. Obama never called me,” with dead eyes.

    • Megan says:

The troops were killed in a terrorist ambush, much like what happened in Benghazi. When will Trey Gowdy be investigating?

      • Annabelle Bronstein says:

Probably right after he investigates the 60 embassy deaths that occurred during W’s term.

      • Jerusha says:

And they were in unarmored pickup trucks. Niger! Niger! Niger!

PS @Annabelle That investigation has to take a backseat to the one about the 250 Americans killed in Lebanon under Reagan.

    • Clare says:

Part of me hopes the widow comes out and puts Trump right – but he will probably disparage her in retaliation, and get away with it beause she is black.

      • Annabelle Bronstein says:

I hope she does, but I certainly understand if she doesn’t. She’s apparently pregnant, I just cannot imagine the pain she is under. Soldiers dying in Niger is extremely rare, she was not prepared and he did not sign up for this–his death to be used as some football to score political points. Where is the “moral majority” now?

      • Megan says:

Trump’s MO is to attack people whom he perceives as vulnerable. Who is more vulnerable than a grieving widow who is dealing with the loss of her husband and the knowledge that their three children will never know their father? If she claps back he will eviserate her because he assumes she is powerless and his deplorables will pile on because they are racist pieces of sh*t.

My heart goes out to her and her children.

      • Annabelle Bronstein says:

Exactly right, Megan. He is the king at punching down, truly no one is better at identifying how to exploit the weakness of a person. Just think a bit deeper about what he is doing to General Kelly… Kelly has been on the ropes for a while in this administration, Trump is basically daring Kelly to speak against him by using probably Kelly’s weakest point. It’s abhorrent.

      • Tiffany :) says:

I felt horrible when I read this story originally, but when I saw the photo of his pregnant wife weeping over his casket with her little daughter standing next to her looking lost, it became even worse. Realizing the wife/mother was a woman of color made me wonder if that had an influence on how Trump treated this family. At one point, even I would have said that’s hyperbole, but Trump has sunk so low that it’s totally possible now, maybe even likely.

      • Annabelle Bronstein says:

The thought crossed my mind as well, Tiffany. At least George W Bush had the good sense and the empathy to take it when those who lost loved ones in his wars yelled at him. https://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/04/25/george-w-bush-dying-soldier-mother_n_7142684.html

      • Green_eyes says:

Sgt. Johnson’s Mother has come forward & confirmed that is indeed what Trump said. This morning FOX News showed yet again their true colors.. they said the wife should be grateful Trump called, he didn’t have to. I wonder where all that faux outraged Patriotism is now from Trumpsters?

      • Tiffany :) says:

“Sgt. Johnson’s Mother has come forward & confirmed that is indeed what Trump said.”

Oh, that breaks my heart. The last thing she should be worried about right now is correcting the President’s lies. She is mourning her son!

Trump is the biggest piece of sh*t that was ever shat.

      • Cran says:

According to The WaPo article I read his mother was in the limousine and confirmed Congresswoman Wilsons account.

Congresswoman Wilson has apparently known the Johnsons through a mentor program she is involved with. Has known them for years. IIRC Sgt Johnson and his two younger brothers grew up participating in the program and she seems to be considered a family friend. One brother is in college studying engineering and the other is in college with his goal to become a fireman.
His widow declined to comment but the article quotes his mother as saying not only did he disrespect my son and daughter he disrespected my husband and myself. Congresswoman Wilson went on to say Trumps words made his widow cry and she said he didn’t even know my husbands name.

The video of her weeping over her husbands casket… I feel sadness and soooo much shame in how Trump expressed his ‘condolences.’

We are so much better than he represents us.

      • whatWHAT? says:

“I wonder where all that faux outraged Patriotism is now from Trumpsters?”

it’s truly astounding. if O had said even ONE of the horrible things about the army or veterans (McCain!) that trump has, it would be being covered 24/7 on Faux News.

“why does the president hate our veterans?” is how it’d go…

      • Tiffany :) says:

“The video of her weeping over her husbands casket… I feel sadness and soooo much shame in how Trump expressed his ‘condolences.’
We are so much better than he represents us. ”

        Yes, this x 1000000000

The video moved me to my core. I wish I could hug her. She (and the rest of his family) deserve so much better than to be treated like political pawns.

    • Pedro45 says:

John Kelly really should resign over this. President Obama called Michael Kelly’s widow, wrote a letter to John and his wife and sat them next to Michelle at a breakfast honoring Gold Star families. But I guess that translates to “nothing” by the feeble-minded narcissist now in the Oval Office.

I’m so tired. He is despicable and there is no bottom to his ignorance and cruelty.

      • Annabelle Bronstein says:

And Obama is too classy to clap back about it. As it should be, call me old fashioned but some things are off limits.

      • Pedro45 says:

Oh, I agree that Obama shouldn’t (and would never) talk about it. I just think if this isn’t what pushes Kelly to resign then nothing will. And I don’t even like John Kelly, he’s just as racist and Islamaphobic as his boss. But Trump lying and politicizing his son’s death should deeply offend him as both a father and a military leader.

      • Annabelle Bronstein says:

I hear you Pedro. This is just so low for Trump to use Kelly’s son’s death in this way. Although I think the jury is still out on General Kelly, he may be sacrificing his personal beliefs for the good of the country. I know I sleep a teensy bit better knowing Kelly would tackle Trump if he went for the nuclear football.

      • Handwoven says:

So out of everything stupid here, one detail ESPECIALLY bothers me, and that is that in my wildest dreams I would not expect a President to call every single family member of a fallen solder.
A 20 year old unmarried kid dies? Call/letter to parents.
A 29 year old married soldier dies? Call/letter to spouse.

Isn’t it weird that it would even be brought up? Obama DID call Michael Kelly’s wife, what else would be expected?

      • Pedro45 says:

Annabelle, it’s sad and terrifying that we think of Kelly and Mattis as all that stands between us and annihilation because our President is utterly unfit in every possible way. This is our normal now.

      • Lightpurple says:

Exactly. Kelly had a wife. The wife is the one who gets the call if the soldier is married.

      • FLORC says:

This monster cares nothing for his country or the sacrifice it’s citizens make. I don’t think his tiny, selfish mind can even comprehend the concept of selflessness, patriotism, loyalty, honor, etc… sadly, we already knew how he treats families of brave, fallen soldiers.

Side comment. I don’t want him impeached. I don’t want a president pence. I want his to be a stain in American history so big that all associated with him in a political sense have careers ruined. I want his family in jail. Him in jail. And bankrupt all connections. Pariahs.

      • Lady D says:

Amen, FLORC. Let’s hope the universe hears the prayer.

      • Tiffany :) says:

The odd thing is that this is the ONLY place where I have read that Obama called Kelly’s widow. Even fact-checkers that are calling Trump “wrong” on the overall point aren’t including this fact, which makes his lies all the more deceitful.

      • jwoolman says:

When they ask Kelly what actually happened, I hope he tells the full truth. Obama did call the proper person, the widow. He might actually have said something later to the father because of his position, unless he felt a letter was sufficient. Certainly Kelly was invited to the White House along with the rest in an event for people who lost family members.

Trump has tried backtracking the same way as he’s done before – such as with his continuing lies about how it’s very difficult for Republicans to win the electoral vote (in what universe?!?!) or that his electoral votes were the highest ever (dream on, he’s near the bottom of the list) — by claiming vaguely that somebody told him that, without identifying the somebody. Trump is so used to lying without any challenge that he can’t understand that people will indeed check what he said or even know immediately that it can’t be true.

His staff has to keep him off the damned phone in such circumstances. Let Pence handle it, he has a normal set of emotions and understands what the survivors are going through and won’t make things worse. Trump has no empathy and is socially awkward in such circumstances. He only thinks about himself and how he looks or sounds, but is so off-base about social interactions that he doesn’t realize how awful it sounds.

    • Nicole says:

And Kelly I believe wrote one of his memos (for ICE) so all that “voice of reason” crap is just crap
Also I hate Trump. There I said it

      • Cran says:

I became aware of and read that memo yesterday. My views on General Kelly are more enlightened. I’m pondering a couple of things. Kelly’s either truly holds those views or he tried to find cases that support the presidents policy because he’s hard wired as military to follow orders. It seems he his efforts at mitigation entail how information is funneled to Trump. He appears to try to make sure he is aware of what gets to his desk and that there exists documentation. In this way it’s possible to keep the worst offenses at bay. He doesn’t seem interested in inserting himself into the process more than that.

Standing on its own that memo is frightening. Also Kelly chooses to remain so…GRAINS of salt.

      • Betsy says:

Because he is literally one of the few things standing between the GOP vis a vis Dump anihilating is all, I’m adopting a position similar to Cran’s. If he doesn’t follow the orders he can, Orange Toilet will fire him. We need some firewall.

    • AnnaKist says:

Oh my gawd. How? How is he still your president? How has a way not been found to get rid of him, given his deplorable, dangerous, lying, illegal corrupt behaviour? Things seem to be sewn up so tight, that America cannot oust an evil president. Can anyone change this? Sorry, but America might as well be stuck in the dark ages if they can’t overturn this horror. Here’s what happened to us:
“He went on to lead the Coalition to victory at the 2013 election and was sworn in as the 28th Prime Minister of Australia on 18 September 2013. Abbott lost a Liberal Party leadership spill on 14 September 2015, and was replaced by Malcolm Turnbull as leader of the party and Prime Minister of Australia.”
I wish America had a way out.

I can’t imagine how humiliated Mrs Johnson must have felt at being spoken to like that, and how much worse she feels now, because it wasn’t enough that she lost her husband and father of her little (and unborn) children in the most horrendous circumstances. No, the fucking president had to insult her further. My god. We always struggle to find the right, meaningful words for the bereaved, and trump, the massive twat, comes out with this, and then lies about it. He needs to go.

    • lavin says:

He’s horrid, I DON’T even want to say the Orange Pigs name.

My heart breaks seeing Mrs. Johnson and her daughter. Heartbreaking.
Sergeant La David Johnson, thank you for your service. May you RIP.

    • jwoolman says:

There were several people in the car who can verify it because it was on speaker. The widow was very upset during and after this call. She said that Trump couldn’t even remember her husband’s name right.

So of course he’s lying. He thought he was talking just to one woman so it would be he said/she said. But there were witnesses to the whole conversation. And isn’t every call from the President recorded? Let him produce the recording to prove he isn’t lying as usual.

  2. Jerusha says:

In my dreams I shove a flaming torch in that anus mouth of his.

  3. Snowflake says:

Oh, what a shock, he’s saying it’s fake news! I believe it is true when he says it’s fake news. He’s such a liar

    • Esmom says:

I know. But the thing is, the deplorables apparently believe him. I’m sickened. More than usual, I should add.

      • Rachel says:

Yes. All he has to do is say “it’s fake news!”, and they believe him. Even when the “fake news” offer REAL evidence his supporters refuse to believe it. How do you ignore reality that much???

    • swak says:

If he has “proof”, why doesn’t he show it? Did he record the conversation (which would be unbelievably horrible)? Other than that, just no. Liars always lie.

      • Darla says:

Even if he did record it, a recording can only prove that someone DID say something, not that they didn’t. IMO.

      • swak says:

I get that, but if the whole conversation were recorded it should prove he didn’t say it (not that I’m defending him – Just saying) – unless there’s a “gap” like in the Watergate recordings.

      • BJ says:

He is a liar.I watched this breaking news last night almost 12 hrs ago.The WH could have denied it last night especially if he has proof. All they did was say the conservation should be private.
I understand why they did put it on speaker phone so the entire family(in the family car) could hear condolences from the Commander in Chief.
As for Trump saying he has proof how many times has he “claimed” he had proof? Comey conversation,Obama bugging Trump Tower, etc.
Regarding the military don’t forget how he said McCain wasn’t really a hero because he was captured.

      • Handwoven says:

        NO HE DIDN’T.
He says this all the time – he used to say it when he was a sketchy businessman, he’s said it during his time in the WH (e.g. to James Comey), he uses it to try to intimidate people. He knows other people haven’t taped things and lies that he has and implies that he can release the “tapes” that he doesn’t even have.

      • Moon Beam says:

He’s a horrible speaker. I can absolutely see him saying something that stupid.

      • holly hobby says:

His “proof” is in the same cabinet with the files of Obama not being American, Obama wiretapping him, etc. It doesn’t exist.

        Mueller, worker faster.

  4. ida says:

I am so disgusted by this vile creature and this disgraceful party that made and still makes this possible. And I am German!

  5. trollontheloose says:

Dude has lots of balls for someone who dodged the military, mocked McCain for having been captured , uses John Kelly’s late son as puppet and still taunt North Korea.. Did he say the same thing to the other white families?

    • Handwoven says:

NOTHING is going to make his hardcore supporters ditch him, and we’re seeing the absolute depths of their hypocrisy.

If them good ol’ Jesus-loving, Support-Our-Troops right wingers are going to ignore the fact that he’s mocked Pence’s praying and is attacking family members of soldiers, then they’ll ignore everything and STILL claim he’s a good Christian man and a true Patriot.

And there will be a nice toasty circle in hell for them. And him.

  6. jferber says:

Effing DESPICABLE. Just what is this horrid thing that is posing as the U.S. president? He is a fucking SOCIOPATH!!!!

  7. Hoopjumper says:

OK, I am not defending Trump (he should have a better script and stick to it) but the most uncomfortable moment for me in this story was when Representative Wilson described the soldier’s body as “messed up”, on the record.

    • Honeybee Blues says:

Really? For me it was the REASON the body was “messed up.” Left out for 48 hours before recovery. That makes me a lot more than just uncomfortable.

      • Jerusha says:

        Same here.

      • Hoopjumper says:

Of course the larger circumstance of four soldiers deaths is deeply upsetting. But the story we’re all commenting on is about how elected officials are treating the bereaved. To me, Representative Wilson’s comments were even more insensitive than Trump’s.

That said, Trump has a greater responsibility to prevent more deaths like this soldier’s. And I am totally confident he’s neglecting it.

      • Kitten says:

        This.

Wilson’s point was that this man died a brutal and gruesome death and Trump can’t even find it within himself to show an ounce of compassion. It was not “expected” and he did not sign up to die.

        F*ck this old orange trashbag.

      • Mermaid says:

        @honeybee
I’m so disgusted and appalled. The gall of this man to politicize soldiers’ deaths!!! He needs to be removed from office today. How can anyone still support him? And I have family members that do. Fox News needs to be shut down and the Fair News doctrine reenacted.

      • Honeybee Blues says:

Spot on, Mermaid, spot the fuck on! Unless and until we can get the Fairness Doctrine reenacted, the dumbing down of the U.S. will continue at breakneck speed.

    • Snowflake says:

Yeah, that made me uncomfortable too

    • magnoliarose says:

      Yes, you are defending 45.
If that is all you got out of this whole thing, then it isn’t surprising you are a 45 supporter. You would have to be. It is deplorable to say something so obtuse.

      • hoopjumper says:

@magnoliarose I traveled from the state I live in to my home state, where I am registered, to vote for Clinton because my absentee ballot never arrived. I have written multiple letters to Representatives and to the WH on preserving the ACA and PEPFAR since Trump took office. I am not a Trump supporter, and I agree with you that his comments to this widow are deplorable.

However, I believe that Representative Wilson’s public discussion of the state of the soldier’s remains using the phrase “messed up” is even more insensitive to his family. It literally took my breath away to think about having my partner’s body described that way. Kitten, above, did a good job summarizing what I believe she meant to say, but sadly, it’s not what she said.

      • jwoolman says:

Hooperjumper- “messed up” was the kindest way she could say it, although I’m sorry you are getting jumped on for expressing your honest reaction to it. You don’t sound like a Trump acolyte to me….

She very likely got it straight from family members who were explaining why it was a closed casket. She knows the family, she very likely knew the deceased. He and his brothers were in a mentoring program with her. This was personal for her, and everything she said was confirmed by someone in the car who heard the conversation on speaker phone. No one in the family has complained about what she said at all. They were shocked by Trump’s insensitive words, which especially upset his widow, and are undoubtedly grateful that she is speaking for them at this time. Maybe this will help some other grieving family to avoid a similar shocking phone call and claims that it didn’t happen (basically the President of the United States calling them liars).

Kelly is a military man, he knows from personal experience how important it is not to make things worse for the families when a member of the military dies. He may not want to control Trump, but he really has to intervene in this particular matter. Trump cannot be allowed to cause such damage again. That’s why it’s so important that someone has spoken out on this.

I can understand why the phrasing “messed up” hit you wrong, but the bereaved family is fine with it and that’s what counts. I really do think they told her about the closed casket in just that way so they didn’t have to give the details.

      • Hoopjumper says:

@jwoolman This is really interesting context, thank you for sharing. It’s nice to know that the family, in all likelihood, didn’t have the same reaction I did. Trump’s comments were bad enough on their own. I do believe he’s basically incapable of feeling the human emotions that ought to guide him in situations like these.

      • magnoliarose says:

        @hoopjumper

I am sorry I was so rude to you. 45 is just so disgusting and horrible, but this pushed my anger over the edge. It was so disgusting and racist it broke my heart to see that poor pregnant mother crying and devastated. I couldn’t even come to this thread.

I can’t with him some days.

      • hoopjumper says:

@magnoliarose No worries. He is an awful President in so many ways; there’s a lot to be upset about. Especially in this heartbreaking story. Sending love.

    • Kristen says:

      War is uncomfortable.

Maybe if more people were faced with the realities of war and death, we’d stop voting morons like Trump into office.

    • CuriousCole says:

Hoopjumper, while it was unsettling to read that description, it definitely wasn’t the worst part of the story.

      • Hoopjumper says:

All I said was that, to me, the Representative’s comments were more insensitive (uncomfortable) than the President’s. Perhaps the grieving family saw things differently, perhaps you would, too, in that situation. I really was just describing my reaction.

There are larger issues, like the fact the soldiers died in the first place, that go well beyond uncomfortable into deeply upsetting. Since the article’s headline and content focused on how Trump was failing to comfort the bereaved, I thought it would be clear my comment was referring to the same topic and not these larger issues. But perhaps not; I will try to be clearer next time.

  8. Tate says:

It doesn’t save me from the f@cking shit show we are living through but I take a tiny bit of comfort knowing I did not vote for this vile piece of garbage.

  9. AbbyRose says:

    There is no rock bottom.

Go ahead with your “proof” Trumpy, I’d really like to hear it.

    • Esmom says:

      Yes, please, on the “proof.”

    • Juls says:

He’ll say he has the “tape” to prove it, which of course is a lie, just like last time when he hinted at “tapes” only to confess later that, surprise, they didn’t exist. Wouldn’t it be great if Ms. Johnson recorded it? Not that we would have a right to hear it, as that is her private business and she deserves to be left in peace in her time of grief. She didn’t ask to lose her husband. She didn’t “sign up for this” and to have her name plastered everywhere. I hope this foul piece of garbage fake president just leaves her alone. But he won’t.

    • whatWHAT? says:

like with all the rest of his “proof” that things are fake (like O’s birth cert), he’ll say something like “I’ll release it in two weeks”…thinking that, like him, most folks forget about things after that time. (this tactic is DUMB DUMB DUMB because if you have proof to exonerate yourself from such a horrible statement you were accused of, you’d drop it right away.)

kind of like the “tapes” of him and Comey.

    • the_blonde_one says:

unfortunately, it’s on vacation with his tax return releases.

  10. RBC says:

I hope what I am thinking( and a few other people I am sure) is not the reason that man’s body was not recovered for 48 hours. Because that is the first thing that entered my mind when I saw his photo. Thoughts and prayers go out to the loved ones of those fallen soldiers.

    • Renee2 says:

Well, RBC – I thought the same thing that you did…

    • lala says:

can you explain? I think I’m missing something

    • holly hobby says:

According to a CNN report, Johnson was separated from the troops during the battle. It took them 48 hours to find the body which means the condition of the remains would prohibit an open casket ceremony.

      It is really sad.

  11. Megan says:

Yesterday I had a long meeting with a progressive advocacy client. I was so exhausted from talking about how to resist Trump, I had to go to bed at 6:30 last night. He is literally sucking the life out of me.

    • Esmom says:

Oh no, Megan, yikes. Hope you’re feeling better today.

    • SoulSPA says:

Megan, you deserve a huge treat to recover!

      • Megan says:

I got a huge dose of fuzz therapy from my kitties. I swear I can feel my blood pressure drop when they cuddle up to me and purr.

When I was working half-time on the most depressing aspects of US wars and other meddling in Central America as well as the grim realities of nuclear war, I realized at one point that I never could have handled the stress without my oblivious feline roommates. It really helped that they couldn’t care less about war and other disasters as long as the supply of kitty krunchies wasn’t affected. Also helped that they had a splendid attitude toward the need for lots of sleep and an occasional stretch. Excellent role models.

I told a disbelieving friend that I was working to prevent nuclear war on behalf of cats and other animals, not really so much for humans. Not terribly fond of my own species, actually, considering that they are the ones who got us all into such messes. Bad things keep happening because good people keep putting up with it.

Yep, Pennywise Trump. Everytime he goes off script or speaks off the cuff, he fuks it up and shows the world how ignorant and mean-spirited he really is.

  13. third ginger says:

There is no aspect of American life that Trump cannot make into a vile reflection of HIS problems, HIS accomplishments. For most Republicans and conservatives, military service and sacrifice are sacred. Yet, where are the voices of outrage?

    • Indiana Joanna says:

Yes, everything he touches he despoils. He’s monstrous.

    • Sophia's Side eye says:

The voices of outrage are too busy bitching about football players taking a knee at games. You know, because it’s disrespectful to soldiers. 😐

  15. Beth says:

The soldier bravely signed up to serve our country and most likely didn’t think he’d be killed. The family lost someone they love, and all the president says is basically, “oh well. Too bad, ” Are Trumpsters happy that they’re getting the president that most of us knew “that’s what they’re signing up for”? President Bone Spurs is the biggest prick in the world. He’s beyond embarrassing

    • aenflex says:

If they were in Special Ops, Special Forces, etc, they absolutely knew they could die. They knew the possibility was very real for each mission. This is pounded into their heads from the very start of their training until the end of their career. These guys don’t patrol or maintain or sit at a computer in tent. They go and do seriously dangerous things; that is their job. They know the risks.

  16. Indiana Joanna says:

Something is rotten in Denmark about the Mission in Niger. The press got distracted by Trump’s usual deflection. The pentagon doesn’t have a full accounting of why the mission went FUBAR. I don’t know if it was a setup or poor intelligence but those 4 servicemen when completely outnumbered. Trump is just going to get into a political foodfight with the congresswoman and call in his culture warriors. The press should do their duty and investigate.

      • I'mScaredAsHell says:

Very interesting article. So if you connect the dots, these soldiers deaths are Trump’s fault and he should be held accountable. Chad pulling their military out of Niger was a direct result of Trump placing Chad on his latest travel ban list. As a result, Chad pulls its military out of Niger leaving US military personnel there exposed and understaffed to deal with a counter military insurgency. Trump has blood on his hands. I guess the 12 day response delay was to give them time to get their lies together. And yet, there still hasn’t been any sort of explanation as to what happened and the media is failing once again to do their damn jobs and investigate properly.

My thoughts and condolences go out to the families.

      • Kitten says:

Thank you for the article–sharing on social media.

They discussed Chad recently on one of my pods and went into detail about how reckless and stupid it was for Trump to alienate an ally in a region where we don’t have a ton of support. These soldiers died because of Trump’s careless decision-making.

      • Mermaid says:

        @imasscaredashell

CNN had some information about the attack. Apparently the survivors said they were set up. The villagers tried to prolong this meeting to keep there there until the attackers came. The troop was also separated with half waiting by unarmored pick ups and the other half in the village. That set up the perfect storm for the attack Whether the Orange Lizard is at fault who knows. But the intel they received was definitely faulty.

    • Nancy says:

As I’ve said a million times, he is incapable of displaying normal human behavior. He has a narcissistic personality disorder or as I always thought, he is a sociopath. His entire life, he has had to parrot others to display any appropriate emotion, since he is void of any emotion himself. This is a sick individual and it is extremely distressing since anyone with an open mind can see (and hear) his mental illness, and yet here he is, our president.

      • Tryannosarahs says:

Hes a classic narcissist. Look up the DSM for Narcissistic Personality Disorder and the DSM for Anti-Social Personality Disorder (sociopathy is a subset of ASPD and no longer classified independently but remains a colloquial description, but correct me if I’m wrong). They are uncannily similar. The only difference is who they want to talk about. Someone with ASPD wants to talk about you (to learn to manipulate you), whereas someone with NPD only wants to talk about themselves. They share the same trademark lack of empathy, dehumanization of other people, and feelings of superiority. I am completely convinced he had an untreatable personality disorder, and some people are still acting like this is normal because his destructive personality is utilitarian to them (looking at you, GOP and Americans who voted for him).

Statement from Steve Schmidt, Repub strategist:

Steve Schmidt, a Republican strategist and former adviser to Bush and McCain, said he was surprised by Trump’s 12-day silence on the Niger attack.

“There is no issue too small for him to comment on,” Schmidt said. “He tweets at all hours of the morning and night on every conceivable subject. He has time to insult, to degrade, to demean always. But once again, you see this moral obtusity in the performance of his duties as commander in chief.”

I have absolutely no doubt at all that this f***ing moron (thanks, Sec. Tillerson!) told the grieving widow of a fallen soldier that her husband “knew what he signed up for.” It sounds EXACTLY like something he would say, because he thinks he’s the smartest guy in the room and would never actually write down a statement to deliver or practice in advance of such a momentous task.

I hope that Mrs. Johnson and her sweet children have a strong community and many family and friends to rally around them as they mourn their loss and try to go on living. I wish I could thank her for their sacrifice and convey my condolences. She is a strong, brave lady, and she deserves so much better than this.

  23. Anniefannie says:

This comment is totally in keeping with his character. Trumps sub conscience is always on full display so while calling on the actual victim/widow he blurts out words that comfort him and what helps him sleep at nite. I can’t imagine having to talk to this creep after losing the Father to your 3 children. I’m not hopeful this incident will finally and forever reveal his true character to his supporters because the soldiers wasnt white….

    • Moon Beam says:

I never read the comments on local news stories because they are bananas. I am convinced that only deplorables comment on local news pages, even here in New York. • Jennie Hix says:

I think the current dog whistle is, “she should be GRATEFUL for even receiving a call!” Which is currently what they are saying on Fox News.

  34. S says:

Trump is a sociopath. He doesn’t even know how to fake empathy. Probably why his staff wasn’t pushing him to visit with or phone the next of kin in the first place.

I thought W was a lousy president, but he was a human being, who cared about the role he had and how it effected others. He didn’t make many decisions I agreed with, but I never believed he was actively trying to ruin the country or hurt his citizens.

Read the story of how he let a fallen soldiers family treat him. That’s the difference between having a somewhat inept leader with poor policies vs a total monster in the White House. Right now, we have the latter and I fear for our nation, and the world.

  35. Radley says:

He’s batshit and yes, I agree he didn’t want to make the call at all, much less offer condolences and be deferential to a black family.

If Kelly threw Obama under the bus he’s out to save his job.

    • Radley says:

A talking head on the news this morning said that Kelly mentioned that as part of a larger narrative. He was invited to the white house as a gold star family by Obama and accepted. Maybe Kelly was trying to offer ol Senile Scum ways to repair the damage, as in invite the families to the white house and spin it like that was your plan all along.

But you can’t share things with Orange Abomination and expect him to comprehend or keep your confidence. He’s a stupid, petty, gossiping, mean-spirited, child. If Kelly isn’t a double agent (please God let him be collecting receipts for Mueller) he should resign. Too much disrespect.

      • NotSoSocialButterfly says:

Even if he isn’t an inside informer, he needs to stay to control/manage this pathological liar and malignant narcissist.

    • Erica_V says:

I think that was an appeasement statement by Kelly. While technically true, Obama did not call Kelly, what Gen Kelly would know that the Bum doesn’t is – Kelly was no longer his son’s next of kin. That would’ve been his wife. So Kelly gets to stay on the Bum’s good side with this comment while also not technically lying to the public. It’s despicable either way but sometimes I do wonder if Kelly really is all that’s standing between Dump and the launch button.

      • Jerusha says:

No, a staffer, preferably a holdover from Obama, should write the letters and then use a stamp to sign them. We all know trump doesn’t give a shit.

This family is so sick. So very, very sick.

Sick of hearing it and I find it very insulting. I also find disgust in people who tell my husband to suck it up when he gets deployed and is away from his children and wife for months. I find the lack of empathy more now with sh*tbag in office.

    • Erica_V says:

Thank you to your husband for his service Sara and positive thoughts to your family for his next deployment.

    • CuriousCole says:

Hi Sara, I want to thank both you and your husband for your service. I’m sorry his family isn’t supportive, you deserve better. The love of my life is military, been gone three months, and I’m now aware that yes, the S.O left behind make an equal number of sacrifices as those officially serving. I’m absolutely sick reading this latest story, and I can’t fathom how 45’s flag waving diehards can still rally around blatant disrespect to military families.

  44. Green_eyes says:

As I posted above Sgt. Johnson’s Mother has come forward and confirmed that was indeed what Trump said. I watched this last night as it was breaking news, they reported then the Family was in the vehicle along w/ the two State Reps. I wonder where all the faux patriotism is now from Trump’s Supporters? Fox News this morning said the widow should be grateful Trump called because he didn’t have to. As the daughter, sister, Aunt, niece, & wife of Combat Veterans both Trump & Faux News totally disgust me & neither have a clue about Military Protocol!

  45. TyrantDestroyed says:

This story enraged me and after made me sob. The soldier was probably only seeking for a better job with better benefits for his family so he enlisted to serve his country and now he’s dead. His family, besides dealing with the grieving and the burden to carry on had to hear the heartless words of this disgusting POS.
I hope his last years are lonely, full of public shaming, harassment, lost of fortune and after he rots forever in hell.

  46. Lilly says:

Proof? Right. The only proof is the 1000 proof kool aid Orange Foolius and his supporters are drinking.

  47. IlsaLund says:

What a worthless POS. A five time draft dodger politicizing standing for the national anthem to stoke racial tension and cultural wars & lamenting how disrespectful it is to veterans. And the fucking hypocrite constantly disrespects Gold Star families. It’s been stated that after the phone call, Mrs. Johnson broke down in tears and said “he didn’t even remember her husband’s name.” My heart aches for the Johnson family cause they are suffering the loss of a son, husband and father and now will have to contend with crazy racist ass Trump and his supporters attacking them. May Trumps soul (if he has one) burn in the lowest levels of hell.

    • Jennie Hix says:

What in God’s name? How could he be so effing cruel? That is beyond disturbing and heartbreaking for the widow. Trump is not even human. There isn’t anything low enough on this earth to compare him to.

  48. Wow says:

Can you believe the balls in this son of a b*tch? Ugh

Okay 45, where’s this proof you said otherwise? Probably working on recording a re-enactment of the call in order to push it off on the American public as being the actual call. !

  49. Rapunzel says:

So Johnson’s mom came forward and said Wilson’s account was correct (OF COURSE IT WAS). Now, Cult45 is trying to spin this as A) She should be grateful he called and B) Well, it’s true.

F@#$ this nonsense. Cult 45 was just disparaging Obama for not calling Kelly (and meeting with him FACE TO FACE INSTEAD!!) and now, a Presidential call for a fallen solider is a special treat the grieving should eat up like candy??

And even if it’s true he knew what he was signing up for (which he likely did know death was possible), that is not an appropriate response. At all. It’s the equivalent of “sucks, but oh well” F@#$ Trump and his cult of idiots.

Oh, and the WH is trying to backtrack and say that Trump was just misunderstood. F@#& off, U BUMS.

    • Jerusha says:

Since they are both WOC the trump buttsniffers will say they are lying. And, of course, Dickweasel-in-Chief will double down on his lies and imply there’s a reason(wink, wink) why they’re saying it.

    Hateful man.

  53. why? says:

“Democrat Congresswoman totally fabricated what I said to the wife of a soldier who died in action (and I have proof). Sad!”-The Dotard

The Dotard is projecting. 2 days ago he fabricated that Obama and previous Presidents didn’t call the families of fallen soldiers. He was on speaker phone, so how could 2 different people who were there listening to his conversation with the wife be lying?

What proof? The WH transcripts don’t count because as we learned with his Nambia/Namibia and “I spoke with the president of USVI” goofs, the WH is changing the transcripts to make the Dotard look like less of a moron.

What is sad is that we have Donald Trump as our president, which was the result of the Russians hacking the 2016 election every way possible.

The Dotard credited this mess. When is enough going to be enough?

Once again, the press is making excuses for the Dotard. One of them said that we should give him the benefit of the doubt because we weren’t there and have no clue what was said to the family.

    • Jennie Hix says:

Lol, benefit of the doubt. Because he is such a nice guy with a great track record when it comes to honesty…

I don’t know how Trump meant it, but when the brass says it during eulogy-type speeches, they mean it as a commendation of bravery and selflessness, and the ultimate sacrifice to one’s country.
Having to regularly face the notion that my husband won’t return, I feel “He knew what he signed up for” is an accurate statement, although possibly insensitive dependent on context.

    • Jerusha says:

“He knew what WE signed up for” said by generals, wing commanders, colonels. They can say it. They faced the dangers themselves. trump is a draft dodging coward who couldn’t be bothered to leave the golf course when the men died. His mouth should have filled with ashes when he said those words.

    aenflex ,
Speaking in front of a group of soldiers is very different than speaking to a grieving civilian family, There is a special sensitive training that military representatives go through before they are sent out to tell a family that their loved one is gone. The Dotard chose not to take this training , He is not getting off the hook for this.

This makes me cry. I hate him so so much. Please God take him.

  57. why? says:

Now Sarah is going to make the situation even worse by giving a press conference about The Dotard’s call, in which she trash talks the 2 congresswomen and makes excuses for the Dotard. This is where the press fails us. They need to stop enabling Sarah and the Dotard. Sarah does nothing but lie and attack and the press just sit there and let her do it.

    • why? says:

For a second day in a row, John Kelly, who was called the adult in the WH, allowed The Dotard and Sarah to use him. Yesterday, The Dotard used the death of Kelly’s son to support his lie about Obama not calling the families of fallen soldiers. What was Kelly’s response? Silence. Now Sarah is saying that the proof that The Dotard tweeted about is John Kelly because he was in the room with the Dotard when he spoke to MJ. Kelly couldn’t even be adult enough to condemn the Dotard and WH for using his son’s death to fuel the Dotard’s lie about Obama, so why would anyone trust his account of what The Dotard said to MJ? The WH can’t keep lying because 3 people(2 congresswomen and the mother) have stepped forward to say that The Dotard said inappropriate things when he called the widow.

      • Bess says:

Kelly is enabling Trump and actually dishonoring his son’s memory by allowing the draft-dodging Trump to use them both to cover up his lies on this subject. Kelly should do the honorable thing and resign.

      • Annetommy says:

Anyone that would use my child as a pawn in their political game would be dead to me. That is what trump has done to Kelly Jnr. Once again trump proves that he is entirely unfit for office. Or even to be called a decent human being.

  58. why? says:

People Magazine did a piece in which the families of fallen soldiers said that The Dotard never called or wrote letters to them. They said that they received letters from senators, but nothing from the Dotard. One of the mothers wrote a letter to the Dotard, but never received a response from him.

    • Erica_V says:

Interesting. Waiting for the “failing People Magazine is fake news” tweets in 3 … 2… 1….

    • why? says:

The WaPo reported that on his own, the Dotard promised to give a father $25,000 when his son was killed in June, but he never sent the money to him. The WH(Sarah) said that The Dotard sent the money and that it was somehow lost in the mail, and then today they sent the father a check for $25,000. They just keep reverse engineering support for their lies.

The WH is doing some major spinning and the press is falling for it. Someone(Ivanka) went to Politico and told them that the Dotard and Melania wrote a letter(another version says that the letter was drafted by WH staff) about the 4 soldiers the day after they died, but get this, for some reason the letter was never released or sent to the families. Sarah read a portion of the letter today. How stupid does the WH think that we are? This sounds like the WH is reverse engineering to make the Dotard look better. If The Dotard wrote a letter the day after the soldiers died, wouldn’t he have said this during his press release in the garden instead of telling lies about Obama? During his press released in the garden, The Dotard said that he wrote the letters the day of the press release and was planning on sending them out that day or sometime later. The Dotard said that he didn’t call or write the families because he was golfing and didn’t think it was appropriate to call the families and it was all to hard on him.

This WH is so shady. Someone(Ivanka) wrote a letter yesterday and then passed it off to Politico either yesterday and today, only after they saw how much negative feedback the Dotard was getting. Shame on Politico for helping the Dotard and his administration deceive us. What does it say about Politico that they would participate in this scam with the Dotard and Sarah?

      • Erica_V says:

Someone should ask to be sent the file – they probably don’t know you can right click and look at the properties to see when it was created.

  59. holly hobby says:

Ugh this f—orange lizard! Such a heartless thing to say to that poor woman. It just breaks my heart. Those soldiers signed up to defend the nation and this bum’s sorry ass.

  60. why? says:

Politico needs to be held accountable. Why are they helping the Dotard and WH deceive us? Based on the explanation, the WH didn’t release the Dotard’s sympathy letter because they thought it would sound better coming from Sarah. Does that even sound reasonable? Why would it sound better coming from Sarah? If this letter really existed, why didn’t Sarah say anything about it yesterday or Wednesday? Politico reported that they saw this so called letter (which was written on Oct 5, the day after the soldiers died), on Wednesday(Oct 18), but we are only hearing about the letter today on Friday(Oct 20) from Sarah? Politico’s statement about this fake letter raises even more questions. The Dotard never mentioned that this Oct 5 existed. Politico is being scammed and now they are scamming us.

    • why? says:

Correction. Today is Wednesday, not Friday. Politico saw the letter that was supposedly written on Oct 5, today. So why didn’t Sarah say anything about this letter Monday or yesterday?

      • jwoolman says:

Because it didn’t exist… They are busily backdating everything.

One question to consider is why The Donald has so totally ignored this loss of life until pushed into it 12 days later. What was going on there that he or the military wanted to keep quiet about? What advantage is there to that silence? With no word from the President, the story didn’t get as much traction as it would have Trump had tweeted or talked about it.

  61. why? says:

What’s wrong with the press? Chris Matthews is defending the Dotard’s comments to MJ. He said that he was giving the benefit of the doubt to the Dotard and that he wasn’t buying the congresswomen and mother’s account of what happened. Did The Dotard promise to give Chris Matthews an exclusive interview? I’m not surprised, for days Chris Matthews has refused to call the Dotard a liar and to call the Dotard’s lies, lies. Chris does segments about the “half truths” that the Dotard tells and what little empathy he has for others, then when given an opportunity, the first thing he does is make excuses for the Dotard.

In other news, “sources”(John Kelly) leaked that John Kelly had no idea that the Dotard was going to bring up his son and was caught off guard(Kelly told the Dotard that Obama didn’t call him in a private conversation that he had no intention of becoming public). Kelly is a liar. It’s why Sarah used John Kelly again today. You can tell that Kelly is lying because he tried to blame the press instead of the Dotard who was the one who brought it up first.

2 for 2. The press falls for Politico’s fake sympathy letter and now Kelly leaking that he had no idea that The Dotard was going to use his son. Notice that Kelly still hasn’t resigned or condemned the Dotard?

  62. Beach says:

Finally Chris Mathews steps up to the plate and does the right thing.

    • why? says:

Did you even watch Chris Matthews or are you just trolling the post I made about Chris Matthews? How did Chris Matthews step up to the plate and do the right thing? He refused to believe the 3 women over the Dotard who has a history of lying and lack of empathy. Based on the comments yesterday, people were very upset with Chris Matthews for how he decided to believe the Dotard over the 3 women. People were changing the channel and writing that they were disappointed in Chris Matthews. Chris Matthews made a very bad decision yesterday.
