For guitarists first dabbling in scales and solos, there's a definite tendency to get stuck in a single playing position. When you're not sure how to flow to different sections of the fretboard, it's easy to get caught soloing over and over in the scale which can severely limit your playing potential.

His first piece of advice for making the neck more manageable is to only pay attention to two strings at a time. He goes on to demonstrate how this works higher up on the neck in the pentatonic scale. By focusing on just two strings, you can start recognizing octaves and become comfortable playing diagonally up and down the neck without having to stay confined in a single section of the fretboard.
