Southampton are keen on signing Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge on loan

Virgil van Dijk became the latest player to swap St Mary’s for Anfield following the news of his £75m switch.

The Dutchman will become the world’s most expensive defender when his move is officially confirmed on January 1.

The Reds have signed a host of Saints stars over recent years but the Telegraph claim a player could be set to go the other way.

It is said that Southampton are keen on completing a loan deal for Reds striker Daniel Sturridge.

Sturridge has struggled for game-time under Jurgen Klopp this season with the likes of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino, Philippe Coutinho and Sadio Mane starring.

Southampton are eager for more attacking power in light of Charlie Austin’s injury blow and want to take Sturridge on loan until the end of the season.

Mauricio Pellegrino also wants to complete a permanent deal for a new striker but is interested in adding Sturridge’s proven goalscoring talents to his ranks.

Sturridge is facing a losing battle to secure a spot in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the World Cup.

The 28-year-old needs more minutes in the top-flight to have a chance of booking his place on the plane to Russia next summer.

He would likely be keen to reignite his career with a short-term exit from Anfield.

Sturridge has scored three goals in 14 Liverpool appearances this season, most of which have come as a substitute.
