WEBVTT AT 6:00. >> THE SOUTH OMAHA BUSINESS ASSOCIATION SAYS THESE PLANTERS ALONG 24TH STREET WERE COSTLY AND NEGLECTED UNTIL SEVERAL ORGANIZATIONS STEPPED IN TODAY TO REVIVE THE CORRIDOR. >> IT’S OUR COMMUNITY AND WE WANT IT TO LOOK GOOD. >> THERE ARE 68 OF THESE PLANTERS THAT RUN BETWEEN L AND Q ON 24TH STREET. AND BEFORE TODAY, THEY NEEDED A LITTLE TLC. >> WHEN THEY FIRST DID IT IT LOOKED REALLY NICE, BUT THEN PEOPLE KIND OF LET IT GO. >> OUR IRRIGATION WAS ABOVE GROUND. OUR WATER BILLS WERE PRETTY HEFTY. OF COURSE TRYING TO DO THE PLANTING EVERY YEAR REALLY WAS A BIG COST FOR US. >> THAT’S WHERE LOWES CAME IN. >> ANY TOWN WE GO INTO, WE WANT TO BE PART OF THE COMMUNITY. YOU KNOW MAKE THAT COMMUNITY BOND AND HELP OUT ANYWHERE WE CAN. >> ORGANIZERS SAY THE HOME IMPROVEMENT COMPANY DONATED $100,000 WORTH OF PLANTS TO THE PROJECT. THAT IS ON TOP OF A $5,000 GRANT FROM THE CITY AND IRRIGATION INSTALLATION HELP FROM METRO COMMUNITY COLLEGE. >> IT FEELS NICE TO SEE DIFFERENT PARTS OF OMAHA, TO COME HERE AND CLEAN UP THE STREETS. >> ABOUT 70 VOLUNTEERS FROM ACROSS THE COMMUNITY DID THE HARD WORK. >> THIS IS A COMMUNITY I GREW UP AROUND, SO SEEING PEOPLE COME TOGETHER AND WORK ON A PLACE THAT I LOVE, REALLY MAKES ME HAPPY. >> I LOVE THIS AREA. >> PLANTS AND PEOPLE ROOTED IN THIS NEIGHBORHOOD GIVING ITS PART, IT SOLD. >> THIS ONE IS CHILECONCHICHERON. THIS IS PORK RINDS WITH GREEN SALSA. >> A VIBRANT PLACE THAT NOW LOOKS AS GOOD AS IT FEELS. >> WE WANTED TO MAKE SURE THEY HAD THE ENERGIES TO KEEP WORKING , SO WE WANTED TO FEED THEM. >> WE HAVE PRIDE IN OUR COMMUNITY IN SOUTH OMAHA AND WE WANT TO MAKE SURE IT LOOKS AS GOOD AS IT CAN. >> IF YOU HAVE AN IDEA FOR AN IMPROVEMENT PROJECT LIKE THIS IS

Students, community members and Lowe's employees made their way to south Omaha Tuesday morning to look after 68 planters in need of some tender, loving car.The South Omaha Business Association is responsible for the planters that run between L and Q on 24th Street. SOMA president Madeline Moyer said the association works hard to keep up with the irrigation system that is above ground, but the water bill isn't cheap. Metropolitan Community College assisted SOMA with a new soil irrigation system in each planter.Lowe's donated all of the supplies. One SOMA board member said it was $100,000 worth of plants.About 70 volunteers came to help make 24th Street more vibrant to attract more business to the area.
