Obama Foundation announces new additions to Board of Directors

The Obama Foundation announced four new additions to its Board of Directors: Penny Pritzker, former Secretary of Commerce and Founder and Chairman of PSP Capital; Glenn Hutchins, Co-Founder of North Island and Co-Founder of Silver Lake; Dr. Mahalia Hines, Board President of the Common Ground Foundation; and Juan Salgado, Chancellor of City Colleges of Chicago.

The addition of the new Directors will strengthen the Foundation’s ongoing commitment to civic and community engagement. The Board of Directors, who serve in a voluntary capacity, will help the Obama Foundation with its mission to identify, inspire, and train the next generation of civic leaders to make the positive change needed to strengthen Chicago communities, and communities across the country.

The new directors will join current members John Doerr, Thelma Golden, Governor Deval Patrick, David Plouffe, J. Kevin Poorman, John Rogers, Michael Sacks, Julianna Smoot, Maya Soetoro-Ng, and Robert Wolf. Marty Nesbitt serves as Chairman of the Board.

“Over the last two years, the Obama Foundation has put together a diverse and talented team to fulfill an ambitious agenda – from unveiling the initial site plan of the Obama Presidential Center to rolling out the first of our programming initiatives and events,” said Marty Nesbitt, Chair of the Obama Foundation. “Penny, Glenn, Mahalia and Juan will be a major asset to the Obama Foundation Board of Directors. I look forward to working with them and our entire Board as we look to create an institution that achieves President and Mrs. Obama’s vision of identifying and training the next generation of civic leaders.”

Penny Pritzker, Founder and Chairman of PSP Capital and 38th Secretary of Commerce, said: “I am deeply honored to work once again with President Obama in this historic and vital endeavor to create greater economic opportunity in Chicago and beyond. Marty has put together an outstanding Board to help counsel and guide the Obama Foundation, and I am excited to be a part of this terrific team.”

Glenn Hutchins, Co-Founder of North Island and Co-Founder of Silver Lake, said: “President Obama’s vision of realizing the potential of democracy by activating citizens and communities to tackle their most pressing civic challenges is compelling and inspiring. I look forward to working with President Obama and the team at the Obama Foundation to convene, train and equip the next generation of community leaders in the U.S. and around the world.”

Dr. Mahalia Hines, Board President of the Common Ground Foundation, said: “I am honored to join the Obama Foundation Board of Directors and thank President and Mrs. Obama, Marty, and the rest of the Board for this opportunity. As a Chicagoan and an educator, I know the tremendous impact the Obama Foundation and the Obama Presidential Center will have on the South Side community and beyond. I look forward to working with the Obama Foundation staff and fellow Board members as we strive to see the mission of the Center come to life.”
