Mbeki was speaking at Mabuza’s funeral at the Regina Mundi Catholic Church in Soweto on Saturday.

Mabuza was hailed as an accomplished poet, author, diplomat who remained loyal to the African National Congress.

She died on Monday afternoon at the age of 83 at her home surrounded by her family.

Mbeki says she died unhappy with the state of the ANC.

“I think all of us hear this message every day about the very deep concern of the people about the levels of corruption. I think all of us know very well that one of the big problems is the level of poverty.

"There are parts of the place you can smell poverty and one of us I am sure have been very concerned about the degrees of lawlessness and lack of respect for the law.

"Now they are pointing fingers at Lindiwe’s organisation for all of this is, they are pointing at the ANC. Lindiwe was desperately unhappy to see her organisation presiding over that kind of reality, and it felt like that accusing finger is pointing at everyone including herself."

Mbeki said he hopes the leaders will work on the renewal process for a new reality about itself.

“I am really hoping that the leadership of the ANC will act on that renewal, The ANC must aim for a new reality about itself, that it must recognise that it carries in itself people who carry the title of the ANC, wear t-shirts, and sing very well but are not ANC."

Former ambassador, and Lindiwe’s lifelong friend Barbara Masekela, concurred with Mbeki’s sentiments.

“I wish I could say that when she left us, she was happy with the state of our country, I wish I could say that she was not sad about South Africa.

"I wish I could say that she was a little hopeful, but all I could say is that she was loyal to the ANC and she could not imagine South Africa without ANC, I need not say more I hope we understand what our duty is."
