SWIM: C-USA Championship Day Three Recap

ATLANTA - The 2020 Conference USA Swimming & Diving Championships concluded its third day of action on Friday, as a full day featuring seven events are now in the books.
 
Friday’s results saw five-time defending league champion FIU extend its lead over second place Rice, registering five first place finishes on the night to raise its margin from 44.5 points to a commanding 126 with one day of competition remaining (712.5 to 586.5).  Florida Atlantic maintained its third place showing at 295, ahead of Marshall at 242.5.  North Texas moved ahead of Old Dominion, 235 to 212.5 for fifth place.
 
FIU’s Stephanie Hussey took the gold in the 400 IM, posting a score of 4:16.30.  A pair of Rice Owls, Hannah Sumbera and Sara Nowaski, placed second and third, respectively, with marks of 4:20.45 and 4:20.71.
 
The 100 fly was one of the closest events of the day, with Rice’s Madison Howe earning first place honors with a time of 53.56, the first gold for the Owls freshman.  She topped a pair of FIU swimmers in Julia Miranda (53.87) and Sara Gyertyanffy (53.95).
 
Another freshman, FIU’s Mandy Song, took home first place in the 1-meter, scoring a 326.25.  Florida Atlantic’s Malvina Catalano Gonzaga finished second (306.50), followed by FIU’s Racheal Foord (293.65).
 
The 100 Yard Breaststroke saw FIU swimmers finish first, second and third in a close competition.  Sara Gyertyanffy led the way at 1:00.77, followed by Taylor Grabenhorst at 1:00.93 and Delaine Goll at 1:00.99.
 
Rice won the 200-freestyle for the second straight year, as Marta Cano Minnaro earned her second gold of the Championship with a 1:46.84 score.  FIU’s Lamija Medosevic and Jasmine Nocentini placed second and third, with marks of 1:48.05 and 1:48.19.
 
FIU had the top two finishers in the 100 Back, as Michaela Trnkova took gold at 53.82 and Julia Miranda earned silver with a 54.02 mark. Marshall’s Jordyn O’Dell grabbed the bronze with a 54.30 score.
 
The evening finished with FIU capturing its fifth event, the 400 Medley Relay Event.  Michaela Trnkova, Taylor Grabenhorst, Julia Miranda and Lamija Medosevic combined for a time of 3:37.62.

The four day event concludes Saturday, February 29 with a full slate of finals. Six swimming and diving programs will compete in 16 championship swimming events and two diving events, with a team champion crowned on Saturday evening. Additionally, individual superlative awards (swimmer, diver, and coach of the year) will be selected by a vote of the participating head coaches and announced during the post-meet awards.
 
Conference USA Swimming and Diving fans are encouraged to follow along with the 2020 edition of the championship meet through a multitude of ways. CUSA.tv will be broadcasting Thursday-Saturday night of the swimming finals live on the internet. Additionally, live scoring and statistics will be available through Atlanta Swimming, for all events.
