Delhi fire dept received 70 calls today
A firefighter was injured as the Delhi Fire Service on Tuesday attended to 70 calls from violence-hit northeast Delhi, an official said. The department received fire-related calls from 8 am-8 pm. A firefighter was injured due to stone-pelting while five fire tenders were damaged, according to the official.
Editor’s Guild condemns attacks on journalists
The Editor’s Guild expressed concern over the attack on journalists during the violence which unfolded in northeast Delhi. Noting that attack on journalist is tantamount to an attack on press freedom, it said that the guilty must be brought to book.
It urged the Delhi Police to provide security to journalists and also asked the Home Ministry to investigate the attacks and punish those found guilty.
Earlier in the day, two NDTV journalists were attacked by rioters while a journalist with JK 24×7 sustained a bullet injury.

Did not commit crime by supporting CAA, says defiant Kapil Mishra
Facing flak for his speech during a gathering in favour of CAA at Maujpur Chowk in northeast Delhi, BJP leader Kapil Mishra remained defiant on Tuesday saying he was not scared of the “massive hate campaign” against him for “speaking truth” and supporting the amended citizenship law. Mishra, a former AAP MLA who unsuccessfully contested the recent Assembly polls on a BJP ticket from Model Town, led a gathering in support of the CAA at Maujpur Chowk in Jafarabad area on Sunday, after which violence erupted between pro and anti CAA groups.
“I have received calls by many to kill me. Many people including politicians and journalists are abusing me. But, I am not scared because I have not done anything wrong,” Mishra told PTI.
Mishra also attacked Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal who held a meeting with MLAs of violence hit areas in north east Delhi on Tuesday. “Why did you not appeal in your speech to open the blocked roads in Delhi? Being the chief minister, you should immediately appeal for opening of roads. Why are yousaving rioters blocking the road?” Mishra alleged in a tweet .
Information and broadcasting ministry issues advisory to TV channels
In an advisory issued to private news channels, the Ministry for Information and Broadcasting asked TV channels to exercise caution regarding content which is likely to incite violence or content which is likely to violate law and order. The advisory further advised TV channels against showing content which is likely to promote “anti-national attitudes”.
The advisory also cautioned TV channels against showing content which contains attacks on religions or communities or which is defamatory, false or half-true.
The advisory asked channels to ensured that no content is telecast which is violative of the Programme and Advertising Codes as prescribed in the Cable Television Network (Regulation) Act, 1995. “All private satellite TV channels are requested to ensure strict compliance,” it added.

A News18 reporter said that BJP MLA Abhay Verma was leading a march of his supporters in the Mangal Bazaar area of Laxmi Nagar. He also retweeted a video in which his supporters could be heard chanting religious slogans and raising incendiary slogans.
Ambulance not being allowed to reach hospital, says ex-AIIMS RDA president
Harjit Singh Bhatti, ex-president of the Resident Doctor’s Association, AIIMS, claimed that ambulances were not being allowed to reach the Al Hind Hospital in Mustafabad, where over 10 people were reportedly nursing gun shot injuries. He also added that calls for help from 102, the ambulance helpline number went unanswered.
Earlier, Delhi Police had also said that injured were being brought to hospitals on bikes and vans as protesters were blocking ambulances.

Section 144 imposed, security enhanced in Noida
The Noida police said it was on “high alert” and Section 144 of the CrPC, which bars assembly of four or more people, was in place in the district, while the Police Armed Constabulary (PAC) has also been deployed in huge numbers, reported PTI. “Liquor shops near Delhi border areas were being closed and comprehensive checking was being carried out,” the Noida Police said in a statement on Tuesday night.
The Uttar Pradesh Police increased patrolling and enhanced security along the Ghaziabad and Noida borders.
Confusion over ‘shoot at sight’ orders
Confusion prevailed over something as important as “shoot at sight” orders. After intial reports confirmed that Delhi Police has issued “shoot at sight” orders in the northeast areas, residents from the region panicked. Several on social media shared their trepidation over the orders. However, ANI quoted Delhi Police who confirmed that “no shoot at sight order has been issued” in the area. CBSE postpones class 10,12 exams in northeast Delhi
The CBSE postponed Class 10, 12 exams in northeast Delhi which were scheduled to be held on Wednesday. However, exams in the remaining areas of the National Capital will be held as per schedule.

Delhi minorities commission writes to Anil Baijal over violence
The Delhi Minorities Commission on Tuesday appealed to Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal for the imposition of curfew in violence-affected areas, after 11 people were killed in clashes and arson over the Citizenship Amendment Act.
In a letter to Baijal, DMC Chairman Zafarul Islam Khan expressed apprehension over the violence and its escalation after the departure of the visiting US president Donald Trump.
“The situation may worsen tomorrow after President Trump leaves tonight. Please treat this as urgent as any delay will result in more loss of lives and damage,” Mr. Khan said in his letter, demanding the imposition of curfew in the violence-hit areas.

SN Shrivastava appointed as Delhi Special Commissioner
IPS SN Shrivastava was on Tuesday appointed as Special Commissioner (Law and Order) in Delhi Police, with immediate effect. A notification regarding this was issued by the Directorate General of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). Srivastava tenure with the CRPF was to continue till 30 June, 2021, News18 reported.

All schools to remain shut in northeast Delhi tomorrow
Delhi deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia on Tuesday said that all schools will remain closed on Wednesday in the northeast Delhi district in light of the violence that has gripped the district since Sunday.
“All home examinations have been postponed. Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has been requested to postpone tomorrow’s board exams,” he added.

Delhi Police PRO MS Randhawa, addressing a press conference on the spate of violence the National Capital witnessed for the third day on Tuesday, addressed the criticism against BJP leader Kapil Mishra’s speech on Sunday in which he issued an “ultimatum” to the Delhi Police to clear roads occupied by protesters against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). Opposition leaders, journalists have slammed Mishra, saying that his speech was incendiary.
Randhawa on Tuesday was quoted by ANI as saying, “It’s under investigation, our top priority was to control the situation which we’ve done. We will investigate all FIRs that have been registered & if a main conspirator is found action will be taken.”
Senior citizen’s source of livelihood burnt in Delhi violence
The cart of fruits of Fatima, a 62-year-old resident of northeast Delhi’s Khajoori Khas, was set ablaze by a mob on Monday evening during the violence that erupted over Citizenship Amendment Act protests in the National Capital. It was her source of livelihood, The Hindu reported.
“What am I supposed to do? What is my fault? I don’t know or care about the CAA. I was not protesting. Why should I bear the brunt? This was my livelihood. Two days ago, I had bought oranges worth Rs 50,000 and so many of them are now destroyed. How will I manage funds? It’s a big loss for me,” she was quoted as saying by the report.
Incidents of arson continue in Chandbagh
Even as the Delhi Police undertook steps to quell the continuing violence in several areas of northeast Delhi on Tuesday, incidents of arson continued on Tuesday evening in the Chandbagh area of the National Capital, reports said.
Rioters set afire to shops and pelted stones in a fresh wave of violence even as the police used tear gas to disperse the crowds, PTI reported. Paramilitary forces have also been deployed to bring the situation under control.
Rioters also set a bakery and several fruits carts on fire.
Residents of Chandbagh made calls for police deployment saying that a mob had gathered in a section of the area, The Wire reported.

Toll rises to 10 in Delhi violence
Delhi Police on Tuesday said 10 people, including one policeman, have been killed in the violence in northeast Delhi and they are responding to incidents involving anti-social elements.
MS Randhawa, Delhi Police spokesperson said the situation in northeast Delhi is under control, even as several parts of the National Capital continued to reel under violence, PTI reported.
Randhawa said 11 FIRs have been registered in connection with the violence. “We are responding to incidents involving anti-social elements. Sufficient force has been deployed in northeast Delhi. The RAF and CRPF has also been deployed,” he said.

BJP leader Kapil Mishra who is being criticised for his ‘ultimatum’ statement on the CAA protests ahead of the eruption of violence in northeast Delhi for three consecutive days, said that he is receiving death threats “even from abroad”.
“…asking to open closed roads is not a crime. To support CAA is not a crime. Telling the truth is not a crime. I don’t fear this massive hate campaign against me,” he posted on Twitter, as the violence continued for the third consecutive day on Tuesday and the situation remained grim across the district.

A curfew has been imposed in the Maujpur, Jafrabad, Chandbagh, and Karawal Nagar areas of northeast Delhi, India Today reported as violence continued for the third consecutive day over Citizenship Amendment Act protests.

Why is the Army not being called in, says Atishi on Delhi violence
AAP leader and recently elected MLA from Kalkaji Atishi on Tuesday evening said that police personnel, civilians, Hindus and Muslims had been injured in “large numbers” in the violence that continued for the third consecutive day over Citizenship Amendment Act protests.

Delhi Police ‘denies’ deficiency in police force
Delhi Police PRO MS Randhawa said that there was no deficiency in the police force after violence continued in northeast Delhi for three consecutive days. The statement came after the force came under criticism for inadequate action to quell the violence over Citizenship Amendment Act protests.
Randhawa said, “I deny that there is any deficiency of police force. Sufficient forces have been deployed in the Northeast district. CRPF, RAF and additional resources of Delhi police are also active. 11 FIRs have been registered and few have been detained.”

Congress leader Randeep Surjewala, while condemning the violence in Delhi, appealed to people to maintain peace.

Rioteers set fire to vehicles in Jyoti Nagar
Mobs have set fire to vehicles in the Jyoti Nagar area of northeast Delhi on Tuesday evening, reports said.
Meanwhile, reports also said that the Congress is likely to hold a meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) over the violence that has gripped the National Capital for the third consecutive day on Tuesday. The meeting is scheduled for 10 am on Wednesday.
Spoke to Narendra Modi about religious freedom in India: Donald Trump
US president Donald Trump, addressing the media on the last leg of his maiden visit to India, when asked about the violence that gripped northeast Delhi for the entirety of his first day in India on Monday, said that he had discussed “religious freedom in India” with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“We talked about it for a long time and Narendra Modi said that (the government) values and wants religious freedom. I believe they are working very hard on it,” he said.
JK 24 journalist in serious condition, PTI reports
The journalist of the JK 24 News channel who was shot at in the Maujpur area of northeast Delhi on Tuesday, Akash has sustained a bullet injury while covering the continuing violence. He has been admitted to the GTB hospital where his condition is serious.

1,000 personnel of Delhi Police deployed in affected areas
An armed battalion of Delhi Police, comprising around 1,000 personnel, is being deployed in violence-hit areas of Delhi while inter-state borders are being closely monitored, PTI reported.
This was conveyed at a high-level meeting convened by Home Minister Amit Shah and attended by Delhi’s LG Anil Baijal, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Commissioner of Police Amulya Patnaik, among others.
It was also decided in the meeting to enhance police-MLA coordination in the national capital and also reactive peace committees with representatives of all sections of society, religions and eminent local citizens, an official said.
Violence continues in Khajoori Khas
CNN-News18 on Tuesday evening reported that rioters with lathis have vandalised vehicles on the Pushta road. Two men who were recording the violence on the mobile were also thrashed with lathis, the report said.
Fresh violence reported in Gamri area in northeast Delhi
Fresh violence has erupted in the Gamri area of northeast Delhi, News18 reported, adding that five people have been injured as stone pelting continued in the area. The report also said that five shops were burnt and a total of 10 fire engines have been stationed on the spot.
Situation grim in Chandbagh, Gokulpuri, Khajoori Khas
The situation remained tense in areas affected by the violence in northeast Delhi for the third consecutive day on Tuesday. Reports said that while the Delhi Police and RAF conducted a flag march in the Khajoori Khas area of the district, the fire in the Gokulpuri market continued unabated for more than four hours.
A mob had blocked an arterial road, reports said.
Meanwhile, reports added that an armed mob had gathered at the Chandbagh area.

Delhi Police says non-availability of personnel aggravated violence
The Delhi Police told the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Tuesday that it did not have adequate forces to immediately control the violence that hit parts of Delhi claiming nine lives, including that of a policeman, PTI reported.
The non-availability of adequate forces was conveyed by Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik during his meeting with the top brass of the MHA.
The Delhi Police told the MHA that it did not have adequate forces to control the northeast Delhi violence immediately, which led to the situation getting aggravated.
Reporters escape mobs ‘on account of being Hindu’
Journalists reporting from the sites of violence in northeast Delhi tweeted that scribes were getting beaten up and and also being asked their religion. Some reports also said that in some cases, the journalists had escaped on account of being Hindu. Of the journalists who were beaten up, one Arvind Gunasekar has been admitted to the GTB hospital.
Mobs are also checking reporters’ phones for photos and videos of the violence, reports said.

Delhi lieutenant governor Anil Baijal on Tuesday appealed for peace and order as violence continued for the third consecutive day in northeast Delhi areas.
Speaking to the media after a meeting with Home Minister Amit Shah and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Baijal said, “Both the chief minister and I want that peace and harmony should remain intact in Delhi. We should do everything possible to maintain peace and order. We should also help the police in this.”

Fresh incidents of violence in Kardampuri
Shots were fired in the Kardampuri area of northeast Delhi. News18 reported that firing occured between two groups and three paramilitary buses were rushed to the spot.

Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, under fire for inaction regarding the continuing violence in northeast Delhi since Sunday, is likely to meet the injured who have been admitted to the GTB hospital in the district on Tuesday, News18 reported.

Bhajanpura-Yamuna Vihar residents recall horror as mobs go on rampage
As angry mobs ran riot in the Bhajanpura-Yamuna Vihar area all through Monday night and Tuesday morning, residents recalled the fear they underwent, with an elderly man pleading with folded hands before the rioters to spare him as he returned from a hospital where his grandson is undergoing treatment.
“I was returning from Ganga Ram Hospital where my grandson is admitted. It was really difficult reaching back home. I had to plead with folded hands with both the groups who were present on the roads after every few steps. “Only I know how I managed to return home,” the elderly man, a resident of C Block in Yamuna Vihar, told PTI.
Locals said mobs spilled on main roads, interior lanes and bylanes in residential areas, while the security personnel were deployed only on the main road, which leads to Bhajanpura, Rohini one side and Loni, Ghaziabad via Gokalpuri flyover on the other.

Hauz Rani protesters release statement against ‘disproportionate action’ by police

Situation remains tense in Maujpur, Gokulpur as armed mobs indulge in arson, claim reports
Reports claim that tense situations are still prevailing in Maujpur and Gokulpur, despite heavy security deployment. A reporter said that a group of men and women, armed with sticks, threatened him due to his “Muslim identity. “Aap Mohameden hain, phir humse mat kehna (You are Muslim, don’t blame us for what happens),” the reporter was allegedly told.
Meanwhile, another reporter, Abhishek Dey, shared a video of Gokulpuri market, next to the Metro station, where people are indulging in arson and a petrol pump has allegedly been set on fire. According to the her, the fire department has said that it will attend to a distress call only after police assures security. Two injured brought to GTB Hospital
Two injured people have been brought to the Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital by Delhi Police, reported ANI . One of them has suffered a gunshot wound, but it is not known if they were injured in one of the incidents of violence being witnessed in the National Capital.

Delhi High Court agrees to hear on Wednesday plea seeking FIR and arrest of persons involved in violence in North East Delhi over CAA.
Filed by Harsh Mander, the plea seeks an FIR against Kapil Mishra, Anurag Thakur and Parvesh Sahib Singh for hate speeches.
A similar plea pertaining to the clashes in Delhi will be heard by the Supreme Court too. It has been filed by former CIC Wajahat Habibullah, Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad and social activist Bahadur Abbas Naqvi.

Home minister has promised ample police deployment in Delhi, Kejriwal says after meet
Talking after the conclusion of a meeting chaired by Home Minister Amit Shah, Lieutenant General Anil Baijal an Congress and BJP leaders, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said that it was decided that parties will rise above politics to make efforts to bring back peace in Delhi.
He added that Shah promised that as much police force required in Delhi will be deployed, after concerns were raised about the shortage of security personnel in violence-hit areas.
He added that nine police personnel are undergoing treatment at Max Hospital and 16 at GTB Hospital.

Additional companies of CAPFs deployed in north east Delhi
35 companies of paramilitary forces have been deployed in northeast Delhi along with Special Cell, Crime Branch and Economic Offences Wing (EOW) officials. Local police from different districts of Delhi have also been called in, keeping in view the sensitive law and order situation.
Alok Kumar, Joint Commissioner of Police, told reporters, “We are continuously taking action and forces have been deployed in Brahampuri, Maujpur, Chand Bagh, and other areas. We are dispersing any gathering and peace committees are holding talks with people to maintain peace.”
Centre makes inflammatory statements, says NCP’s Nawab Malik
Speaking on the Delhi violence, NCP’s NAwab Malik said that the Centre should take full responsibility for the same. “Since two to three months, demonstrations and violence is taking place over CAA, NRC. People at the Centre make inflammatory statements and speak the language of bullets. Kapil Mishra says the matter will be settled after Trump’s departure. Governments do not work in this way in a democracy,” he said.

Severe shortage of police force in affected areas, Kejriwal admits
Appealing to Delhiites to maintain peace, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said after a meeting with his MLAs and some officials that the violence reported during clashes in north east Delhi on Monday was “unfortunate”.
Addressing the media ahead of his 12 pm meet with Home Minister Amit Shah, he said that the District Magistrate has been asked to take out peace marches in the affected areas. “MLAs of the affected areas informed me that there is a severe shortage of police force and police can’t take action till they receive orders from the top,” he said.
He added, “The hospital authorities have been asked to be prepared and provide quality medical aid to the injured coming there. Fire department has been asked to coordinate with police and reach the affected areas on time.”
Kejriwal further said there is a need to seal borders and make preventive arrests, since that MLAs from border areas told that people involved in the protests are coming from outside the National Capital.
Pleas in SC, Delhi HC demand FIRs regarding Monday’s violence, judicial inquiry
The Supreme Court has agreed to hear an application filed by former Chief information Commissioner Wajahat Habibullah and others seeking lodging of FIRs with regard to the recent violence in Delhi over the amended citizenship law.
The bench agreed to hear the matter on Wednesday. In the application, Habibullah, Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad and social activist Bahadur Abbas Naqvi have also sought direction to authorities to ensure safety of women sitting on protest against the CAA at Shaheen Bagh and other places in the national capital.
Meanwhile, a plea has been moved in Delhi High Court by the Human Right Law Network regarding the violence in Maujpur, Jafrabad and adjoining areas in during the anti-CAA protests. The petitioner sought independent judicial inquiry and compensation for the deceased persons and the arrest of some prominent political personalities alleging their hate speeches incited violence.
DCP North East Delhi imposes prohibitory orders till 24 March
DCP (North East) Ved Prakash Surya in an order has prohibited the carrying of weapons, sticks or any other incendiary material that can be used for violence, keep in view the clashes witnessed in Delhi since Sunday.
The order, which will be applicable till 24 March, also prohibits the assembly of four or more persons and any kind of demonstration without permission. “Printing, circulation or dissemination of any communally sensitive and provocative material in any media, including social media platforms, that may endanger peace and tranquility in the area is prohibited,” the order stated. It further stated that violation of the order will be punishable by Section 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) of the Indian Penal Code.

MoS Home promises ‘strict action’ those involved in Monday’s violence
Union Minister of State for Home G Kishan Reddypromised strict action against those involved in the clashes in Delhi on Monday night. “Since two months, there was a dharna, but the Centre gave a chance for peaceful demonstrations and protests. However, yesterday’s violence won’t be tolerated,” he said.
He also urged political parties to respect that US President Donald Trump is in Delhi, adding that talks can be held “regarding any issue”.
P Chidambaram says people paying price for putting in power insensitive people
Condemning the violence in Delhi, senior Congress leader P Chidambaram said that people are paying the price for putting in power “insensitive and shortsighted” leaders.
In a series of tweets on Twitter, the Congress leader said the amendment to the CAA should be abandoned forthwith and the government should listen to the voices of the anti-CAA protesters by keeping the CAA in abeyance till the Supreme Court gave its verdict.
Chidambaram said the violence in Delhi on Monday and the loss of lives are most shocking and deserve the strongest condemnation. “The people are paying the price for putting in power insensitive and shortsighted leaders,” he said.

Toll in yesterday’s clash rises to 7
The death toll in the northeast Delhi violence climbed to seven, a senior police official told PTI on Tuesday. A Delhi Police head constable, Ratan Lal, was among the seven killed in the violence that erupted on Monday over the amended citizenship law.
Till Monday, authorities had said at least four people, including Lal, were killed in the violence. They said that the death toll has increased to seven on Tuesday.
Amit Shah calls for meeting with Delhi LG, CM, leaders of political parties at 12 pm
Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday has called for a meeting at 12 pm to discuss the prevailing situation in the National Capital after violence in Northeast Delhi over the amended citizenship law that left four people dead.
Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and representatives of different political parties were invited for the meeting. The home minister has convened a meeting to discuss the current situation in Delhi, a Home Ministry official said.
The move came after the home minister reviewed the law and order situation in the National Capital on Monday night as violence rocked Northeast Delhi.
Cop who was injured in yesterday’s clashes out of danger
Shahdara Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Amit Sharma, who was injured during clashes between two groups in Delhi’s Gokulpuri on Monday, has regained consciousness and is now out of danger at a hospital in the city, reports ANI.
Sharma underwent surgery on Monday night and his CT Scan was done on Tuesday morning. He is safe and out of danger.

‘Those who opened attack weren’t just police, were chanting Jai Shri Ram’: Eyewitness at Chand Bagh
Police and a gang of men pelted stones at protestors in Chand Bagh on Monday night, an eyewitness recounts. “We reached Chand Bagh’s anti-CAA protest site at 11.30 am on Monday. Once we reached, the people assembled there started narrating their ordeal. Just a few hours prior, they were lathicharged but the situation was brought under control. As we were speaking to them, another commotion broke out. We assumed it was a lathi charge but soon we realised that those who had opened attacks weren’t just the police. Many of them were armed and were chanting ‘Jai Shri Ram’. As we started to run for cover, people from the protest site responded to the attacks. They started throwing whatever they could find at the attackers. The situation went out of hand as I saw police officials getting beaten up.”
Delhi Police, RAF hold flag march in Brahampuri area
Following the incidents of stone-pelting in Brahampuri and Maujpur area, Police and Rapid Action Force personnel conducted a flag march in these areas after clashes broke out between two groups, reports ANI.
Security has been beefed up at the incident site and also in and around other areas of North-East Delhi. Five people, including one police head constable, lost their lives and 105 got injured in the clashes in North-East Delhi on Monday.

Fire dept waits for police protection as fire rages in Karawal Nagar’s tyre market
An incident of fire has been reported at a tyre market in Karawal Nagar today. Even though the incident was reported at 8.24 am, the fire department has not been able to reach the spot yet and is waiting for police protection. Vehicles were set on fire in Karawal Nagar on Sunday.
A tyre market in Gokulpuri was also set on fire on Monday night during violence over CAA. A call about the massive blaze was received around 8.30 pm, following which 15 fire tenders were sent, the fire department official said. Several shops were gutted in the fire, the official said, adding that it was brought under control by 11.40 pm and the cooling process was underway.

45 fire calls received till 3 am amid clashes between anti, pro-CAA protesters
The Fire Director of north east Delhi told ANI that 45 fire calls were received between Monday and 3 am on Tuesday. Three firemen were injured and one fire tender was set ablaze.
Meanwhile, the Delhi police said that it is continuously receiving calls of violence from the affected parts of Delhi and the situation remains tense.
Man who opened fire during Jaffrabad clash detained
A man in a red-tshirt, who was seen brandishing a gun and confronting a lone policeman in Jaffrabad, has been detained, Delhi Police sources told ANI. The man was identified as Mohammed Shahrukh.
In a video of him that went viral, he opened multiple rounds of fire and even pointed the gun at the cop’s face point-blank range.

Meanwhile, the Delhi Traffic Police said the Wazirabad Raod has been opened for vehicular movement. Additionally, till around 4 pm, traffic is likely to remain heavy in the areas of Moti Bagh, Chanakyapuri, India Gate, areas around ITO, Delhi Gate and the adjoining areas of Central and New Delhi. In the evening, traffic is likely to remain heavy in Chanakyapuri, RML roundabout, Dhaula Kuan, Delhi Cantonment, Delhi-Gurgaon Road (NH-48) and adjoining areas. Necessary traffic diversions as per ground situation may also be enforced.
AAP’s Gopal Rai leaves from outside L-G’s residence after police promises security in vulnerable areas
AAP minister Gopal Rai, who turned up at the residence of Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal late on Monday night to discuss “deteriorating law and order situation” in the national capital, along with other party leaders left after receiving an assurance from the Delhi Police about ensuring security to people.
“The police assured us that adequate security will be deployed in vulnerable areas. We are going back now,” Mr Rai said.
The Delhi environment minister had arrived at the residence of the Lt Governor late night along with other AAP leaders including Imran Hussain, Dilip Pandey, Akhilesh Pati Tripathi, Sanjeev Jha and Amanatullah Khan were seen waiting to meet with Mr Baijal.
“Lt Governor Delhi did not meet us but his representative Special Commissioner Rajesh Khurana came and gave an assurance about the safety of people. Based on his assurance we are going back home. If there is any further incident we will again come to the LG’s house,” Rai posted on his Twitter account.
Protest in Mumbai against Delhi violence; security at Gateway amped up
People gathered at Mumbai’s Marine Drive to protest against the violence that took place in Delhi were detained by the Mumbai Police. Sangram Singh Nishandar, DCP Zone 1 told reporters, “Azad Maidan is designated place in Mumbai for holding protests. Despite that some people were going to Gateway of India, when we stopped them, they gathered at Marine Drive.”
Police presence has been stepped up at the Gateway of India to thwart any attempt by people to gather at the venue to protest against the violence in Delhi. According to the official, police personnel have been deployed in large numbers around the iconic monument, located across the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in south Mumbai, and barricades put up at nearby roads to restrict movement of people and vehicles.
The Gateway saw protests against the violence unleashed in the JNU campus in January. The protest was eventually moved to Azad Maidan.
Opposition leaders condemn violence
Interim Congress chief Sonia Gandhi appealed to the people of Delhi to maintain communal harmony and “defeat the ill intentions of forces trying to divide India on the basis of religion”.
Meanwhile, AIMIM’s Asaduddin Owaisi said he condemned the clashes.“This is a shame for the country that violence broke out when foreign dignitaries are on a visit here,” he said.
Bhim Army chief demands visit to areas affected by clashes
Bhim Army Chief Chandra Shekhar Azad, in a letter to Lieutenant Governor of Delhi Anil Baijal said he wishes to visit areas affected by the violence in Delhi on Monday. “I’m extremely concerned for safety and security of people belonging to Muslim and Scheduled Caste community in many parts of North East Delhi,” he wrote.
The letter further stated, “You are requested to kindly direct Delhi Police to provide adequate security for the visit. I would be grateful if you could direct concerned police officials to inform me time and date preferably tomorrow itself when I can undertake the visit.”
Amit Shah holds late night meeting following clashes in Delhi
Home minister Amit Shah held a late night meeting in Delhi on Monday after clashes were reported in many parts of Delhi, including Chand Bagh, Bhajanpura and Maujpur. The meeting that started at 10 pm and concluded post midnight was attended by the Delhi Commissioner of Police, Home Secretary, IB chief and other senior officials, reported News18.
