ATHENS — Kirby Smart isn’t looking to reinvent the wheel where his offense is concerned, he just wants to make sure his players execute well enough to keep it turning.

The Georgia coach has been asked in several different ways about how he might improve the Bulldogs’ offense on the heels of a 20-17 overtime loss to South Carolina with a 6 p.m. game against Kentucky coming up this Saturday.

Smart simplified it as best as he could on Tuesday night.

“I go back and say again, we talked about it the other day, it’s simple: Don’t turn the ball over, be more explosive, and win two-minute, all right?” Smart said. “Those are three really critical factors. We’ve got to be more explosive.”

Georgia ranks 39th in the nation on offense in big-plays produced per Pro football focus, which defines explosive runs as 12 yards or more and explosive passes as 16 yards or more.

D’Andre Swift’s longest run this season is 40 yards, but he hasn’t broken one longer than 23 yards the past three games because downfield blocking has not measured up to last season’s.

“The runs that we have, there were about six or seven runs in there that were over 10 yards that I would argue could be home runs if one more guy gives a little more effort and gives a little more blocking,” Smart said.

“You’ve got to be able to be more explosive when you get an opportunity to do that. And you’ve got to win two-minute in games. And you can’t turn it over.”

Georgia turned the ball over four times in the loss to the Gamecocks and failed to force any.

The turnovers negated the Bulldogs’ advantages in total yards (468-297), time of possession (36:04-23:56) and first down (30-16).

Smart re-emphasized that he likes the approach his team is taking this week, and it was clear he maintains confidence in them.

“There’s been good energy out there at practice, there’s nobody running from work,” Smart said, “and there’s been good spirit out there.”
