Pork recall 2019: 515,000 pounds of pork products recalled because they were not inspected

More than a half of million pounds of pork products are being recalled because they were not inspected, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service announced.

Maywood, Illinois-based Morris Meat Packing is recalling approximately 515,000 pounds of various raw pork products because they "were produced without the benefit of federal inspection and outside inspection hours," according to the USDA notice posted this week.

The items, including pork loin, pork back ribs and pork chops, were shipped to distributors and Illinois retail locations. A list of stores was not available Friday.

The affected items were produced on Saturdays between Nov. 25, 2017 and Nov. 9, 2019. A list of items is available at www.fsis.usda.gov along with a photos of product labels.

Also recalled this week were select boxes of Cheese Nips and select salad products. The Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also are advising not to eat romaine lettuce harvested in Salinas, California, because of an E. coli outbreak.

The USDA said the issue with Morris Meat Packing was discovered after receiving an "anonymous tip that the firm was producing products without the benefit of inspection."

There have been "no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products," the USDA said, noting it is "concerned that some product may be in consumers’ refrigerators or freezers."

Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.

The USDA classified the announcement as a "Class I" recall, which is considered a high health risk – a "situation where there is a reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death."

Other recalls

Yakitori Chicken with Japanese-Style Fried Rice: Ajinomoto Foods North America Inc., of Oakland, Mississippi, is recalling approximately 172,692 pounds of chicken fried rice products "that may be contaminated with extraneous materials, specifically pieces of plastic." The 54-ounce packages were shipped to retailers in Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey and Texas, according to the recall notice. 

Cheese Nips: Select boxes of the Nabisco-brand cheese crackers are being recalled because they may contain small plastic pieces.

Salad products: Missa Bay LLC from Swedesboro, New Jersey, is recalling more than 75,000 pounds of salad products that contain meat or poultry because the lettuce may be contaminated with a strain of E. coli.
