From New York Times bestselling author Penelope Douglas comes the thrilling, final installment in the Devil’s Night series…

What happens when it's five against one and nowhere to run?

EMORY

They call it Blackchurch. A secluded mansion in a remote, undisclosed location where the wealthy and powerful send their misbehaving sons to cool off away from prying eyes.

Will Grayson has always been an animal, though. Reckless, wild, and someone who was never bound by a single rule other than to do exactly what he wanted. There was no way his grandfather was going risk him humiliating the family again.

Not that the last time was entirely his fault. He might’ve enjoyed backing me into corners in high school when no one was looking, so they wouldn’t catch on that Mr. Popular actually wanted a piece of that quiet, little nerd he loved to torture so much, but…

He could also be warm. And fierce in keeping me safe.

The truth is… He has a right to hate me.

It’s all my fault. Everything.

Devils Night. The videos. The arrests.

I’m to blame for all of it.

And I regret nothing.

WILL

I never minded being locked up. I learned a long time ago that being treated like an animal gives you permission to act like one. No one has ever looked at me any other way.

Their only mistake is believing anything I do is an accident. I can sit in this house with no Internet, television, liquor, or girls, but I’ll come out of here with something far more frightening to my enemies.

A plan.

And a new pack of wolves.

I just didn’t expect one of my enemies to come to me.

I don’t know who smuggled her in or if they meant to leave her here, but I can smell her hiding in the house. She’s here.

And as the security detail leaves the supplies, the gates close, and the door to my gilded cage opens, giving me free reign of the house and grounds for another unsupervised month, I remember with a smile…

Blackchurch houses five prisoners. I’m only one of her problems.

*Nightfall is a full-length, romantic suspense suitable for readers 18+. It’s necessary to read the prior installments in the series before starting this story.

first of all, i knew with my whole heart, mind, body, and soul - and pardon my language here - but i fucking knew it. i KNEW that one scene would ruin my good mood and thus ruin my enjoyment for this book. of course i had hope in the beginning but when that scene came up?

me to myself:
description

plot
Will Grayson (H) has always been obsessed/in love with Emory Scott (h) in high school, though, he would always chase after her and she would always reject him. Once she finally gave him a chance, well, he fucked up which then resulted in him and his friends going to prison.

9 years later, they meet again at Blackchurch - this bougee prison where "troubled" rich kids are placed. why would Emory be there when she's not at all rich? well, it's all a mystery.

TW // very descriptive scenes of physical abuse from a sibling, and out of character sex scenes

WHAT I LIKED
before i get into my rant because i will do that again, i just want to say that i LOVED the past chapters. reading about Emory and what she went through? i was crying. i was so emotional and i don't even know why. i just know that i wanted to hug her. like- she was just so alone and ughh that hit me. that hit real hard. and the passion? romance? longing? a s t r o n o m i c a l. it was so good.

i mean Will having unrequited feelings and chasing after Emory? yes. i love that. and the romantic development where Emory acted like she hated Will but he slowly won her over with him just hugging her and being there for her not knowing that she feels alone but his mere presence just makes her a little more happy and sees the beauty in the world?? ooohh

CHEF'S KISS x3000.

also, of course, honorable mention to the man, the myth, the legend - Damon Torrance. i love him.

WHAT I DISLIKED (major spoilers)
ehh for those who read this, y'all probably know what im talking about and that's the lovely sex scenes in the present chapters. honestly, most of the present chapters? ehh. didn't really like them. i didn't feel the romance, the passion, longing, etc. in these chapters because most of the things Will and Emory did were petty games and they kinda got together in an intimate way pretty fast and since y'all know i love a good development, well, i didn't like that.

anywho let's get on with the sex scenes. im pretty sure 99.9% of the sex scenes in present chapters involved Emory and Will having sex while other couples are also having sex with them or joining in. let's see, there was one with Micah and Rory, one with Aydin and Alex, and alas, Alex and Emory having sex in front of Will, and the whole Horsemen clan. how lovely.

description

most of the time, i just sat there and contemplated life and asking myself -mel, why are you reading this? -BECAUSE YOU DON'T GIVE UP BISH -but.. -shut up, you can do this -no i caaaan't -i said SHUT UP and on and on and on.

but after reading the past chapters and how much i loved them and the shit they did in the present chapters? i got so annoyed and frustrated. like- WHY ruin a good romance with unnecessary smut?

and whyyy, why have sex with the woman who has been sleeping with your mans for years ("in the shower, on the beach, against the wall, on the hood of the car in the rain, and in my backseat.."), has a bond/connection with him because they're "reflection of each other", who's best friends with him and was practically there for him whenever he felt alone???? huh??

listen, i love Alex but i actually resented her and Will's friendship here because of the sex scenes!! Aydin telling Alex to moan Will's name in front of Will and Emory while both couples are having sex and then Emory doing an out-of-character thing where she sleeps with Alex in front of Will and Will being aroused by that?? what?? i ain't a prude and all but i honestly don't like all the sharing/threesome/orgy scenes in this book because they don't make sense!!!.

description

im also more frustrated by this because the story was going so good until Alex showed up in Blackchuch by 50% mark because it's ruined by these kind of scenes and i end up disliking what's happening afterwards so that's why i skimmed the last half of the book because i didn't care anymore. those scenes literally ruined my good mood and the love i had for the characters. and instead of swooning or emotionally connecting to them, i just roll my eyes with the stupidity ughh.

* * *

im just honestly so sad because i love Will and Emory in the past chapters and the writing/romance reminded me of my favorite pen douglas books but the present chapters reminded me of the new adult trend that's happening right now where a scene is written for smut/shock-value which ultimately kind of ruins the character and romantic development which are so important in story-telling.

the focus on Alex in the last half diminished Willemy's romance in the present chapters. i honestly loved her as she is one the most tolerable/likeable characters in the series but the constant repetition of letting us know of her and Will's past sexcapades was so.. tacky? eh i didn't like it at all, which also made me not like her which im actually sad about.

but anyways, to end this note and series, i just want to proclaim my love for Damon Torrance... again. that's it.

aaand now it's time to wait for the next generation of the Fall Away series but now im a little worried because im not really down with this threesome/orgy trend that's going on. also, damn, do i miss Jared and Tate ugh.

“Do you know why I’m here?” I asked Will, circling the island and moving away from him.

“Have you been bad like us?”

My pulse quickened, but I closed my mouth, refusing to answer.

He smiled.

“You know...” I murmured, going cold. “Don’t you?”

He nodded.

Shit.

“Do you want to explain?” he asked.

“Would it matter?”

He shook his head.

I dropped my eyes, clutching the knife in my hand and trying to get closer to the door.

I tightened every muscle in my body. “I wish I’d never met you.”

“Believe me, girl, the feeling is mutual.”

screaming, crying, throwing up, running around in circles, digging my own grave. this series for real slapped my ass like a drum. i read this 700+ page book in a day and i still want more.

first off, the way this book popped off from start to finish?!? it was giving the plot and the romance !! there wasn’t one moment, one chapter, or one sentence that i wasn’t sucked into. the entire week i read this series, that’s all i did. i didn’t do jack shit for anyone because i was so consumed by these books.

William Aaron Paine Grayson the motherfucking lll can get in my fleshy vessel. this man had NO business being THIS submissive and breedable 🧎🏽my eyes were sucked out of their sockets bro. this dude really carried this whole motherfucking series on his back! every tension filled scene with him and Emory had my back arching. if there’s one thing i love, it’s a man that worships the ground his girl walks on. and oh he WORSHIPS! consider this pussy a casket he can come hide in it 🥵 the things i would do to get this man in my deep ether…🧎🏻‍♀️🧎🏻‍♀️🧎🏻‍♀️

Emory was the best female protagonist to read about in this series. she fr had me blushing at these pages and my toes curling in every scene. i was moaning with her in every scene. she’s badass and i love how she pretty much witnessed so much history in the making just by being her loner self. her relationship with Damon too 🥹🥹🥹fucking tears. he’s the brother she deserved. the fact that she has Will on a fucking leash!! i love that she’s his humbler. the character growth and realization of self worth?!? she deserves the world and nothing less. she’s so hot for that. 🥵🥵🥵

this book was the best one out of the series. i enjoyed it through and through. even the extra characters we were introduced to and the characters we got more context from. the Aydin and Alex plot line, blackchurch, the catacombs, the train scene 🥵, how the plot thickened and got super fucking chaotic towards the end, that epilogue AND (spoiler) the fact that Damon has 5 kids?!? 🥹🥹🥹 omg all of it was so fun to read about.

i said it before and i’ll say it again but for a series about a bunch of horny people who peaked in high school 😂 this series fucking ATE! i’m sad it’s over

final rankings
Horseman:
1. Will Grayson |||
2. Damon Torrance
3. Kai Mori
4. Michael Crist (i used to hate him but after reading this book, i like him)

Devils Night girls
1. Emory Scott
2. Nikova Banks
3. Winter Ashby
4. Ricka Fane

Will & Damon duo over Michael and Kai dua any day

Friendships that have my heart ❤️

The ending that we were all seeking and did not expect coming between two lost lovers that bring the best of each other...

For those whom have read this series already, we know by now what to expect from this corrupted world by Penelope Douglas. But being surprised by her majestic mind is also something you should expect no matter what.

The love for William was right there from that very beginning when he was introduced in Corrupt, and we got little glimpse here and there from Emory. She instantly became my favorite that's for sure. But after reading this novel there was definitely an attraction between these two characters in which cannot be predicted from previous novels. The darkness that arises from Will is one that was totally unexpected for sure. He is the one untouched individual in this series that I would love nothing more then to cuddle and kiss all over. But at the same time, he is this one determined character that wants the best for everyone whom he loves and cares for.

When he first sees Emory, the way he describes his love for her... that tender side to Will is what truly breaks your heart as a reader. There is no other character like him in this series, and there is no denying that. The strong force that comes from wanting nothing more then to protect Emory, love her, care for her, and just ravish her at the same time is just to potent and stunning to read;
“Don’t you know that you can have anything you want?” His eyes searched mine. “I’ll hurt anyone for you.”

He knows what he wants and he wants it now. But the struggle for him is having Emory open up for him and let him love her. Even with the flashback scenes and the present ones, the energy that is being founded upon Will and Emory is beyond vigorous. Even after years of being apart, there is not denying their chemistry and potent attraction. While Emory knows how to properly protect herself, she also knows that dealing with Will is nothing something that portrays well in her world filled with darkness. But that never directs him away from her;
“But you’re going to be fucking mine someday,” he growled. “Come hell or high water, Emory Scott. You’re my woman, and you’re going to come home to me every day and sit at my table and warm my fucking bed.” He kissed me. “And you’re going to give me a Will Grayson IV. Mark my words.”

For those seeking to find a novel filled with an open mind of the sexual world, as well as being emotionally corrupted by the queen of all dark romances, then this series is one that you do not want to miss out on. This finale to an incredible series is what we all needed for sure. My hands are itching for Penelope's next novel, which I am hoping is Motel since I am a huge avid of Birthday Girl myself. Let's just wait to see what happens, and I cannot wait!

2020 was already bad as it is, I didn't need a (or rather several) group orgy scene(s) to top it off.

I'm a huge Penelope Douglas fan. She wrote some of my all time favorite books (Bully, Until You, Punk 57), but I'm just going to say it: I'm not fond of her Devil's Night series or her latest releases. Nightfall is a case of "expected nothing, but still managed to disappoint".

WARNING : Review contains a lot of spoilers!

Nightfall is divided into "Present" and "9 years ago" chapters. The present chapters take place at Blackchurch with Emmy and the 5 Blackchurch boys (Will, Aydin, Rory, Micah, Taylor). These chapters were extremly boring. The plot or lack of plot was boring me so much and didn't add anything to the story overall. I didn't understand what was the point of Blackchurch. All they do there is to show how Aydin is the alpha, Will & Emmy's push and pull dynamic and then some weird sex scenes when it was discovered that Alex was there as well.

The '9 years ago' chapters were the best thing about this book. Will & Emmy high school flashback scenes were really cute. Will was chasing Emmy around and wanted to be with her, while she tried to give him the cold shoulder. The unrequired love trope where the H chases after the h is just chef's kiss. Emmy didn't have an easy life, because she was constantly emotionally and physically abused by her older brother who was a cop in Thunder Bay. Reading these scenes was breaking my heart. So when the flashback scenes stopped, it's when I stopped caring about this book as well.

We didn't ask for any orgy/threesome scene and instead we got not one (1) but three (3). We're living our best life in this book ✨The orgy god a.k.a. Penelope Douglas blessed our soul✨

Will and Damon getting each other off while Emory was watching in the flashback scene.. yeah not great but okay, not a surprised it was like hinted in Kill Switch. Damon and Will often fooled around so that's not uncommon. But then at Blackchurch the shower scene where Emmy and Will are having sex while Aydin's fingering Alex and Emmy telling them what she would do to Alex if she had the chance.. Why? Just tell me why. Or Aydin telling Alex to moan Will's name when she climaxed. What have I done to deserve this?

Or my personal favorite: the train scene in chapter 34 (in case you want to read for yourself 🥴) What happened is that everyone (Michael, Rika, Banks, Kai, Winter, Damon, Misha, Ryen) arrive to Blackchurch to rescue Will and Alex. They excape and use a train to get back to Thunder Bay. The train stopped, lost energy or whatever. First Emmy and Alex start to make out with e/o and everyone around them was watching (Michael & Rika, Kai & Banks, Will) Slowly every couple joints this party by starting to fuck. Michael & Rika have sex, Kai is fingering Banks, Emmy licking Alex and "scissoring".

Nothing against threesomes and orgies. If that you're thing, cool. I just don't understand, WHY Penelope Douglas puts them in this series. All these guys are portrayed as super "possessive" but have no problem sharing their girls with their friends or let other people watch them as they come? That makes zero sense to me. All these orgy scenes do not serve any purpose for the story and happen randomly. Take the character Alex, she's only put into the story to engage in all these orgy scenes and for what. Sometimes I even had the feeling that Penelope Douglas put much more thoughts into the orgy scenes than in the Will & Emmy sex scenes when they are alone.

A lot of readers in PD's reader group have asked, if Alex is going to get her own book and PD said she's going to get her happy ending in Nightfall and she did, but it took away a lot from Will & Emmy, cause suddendly Alex & Aydin were a huge part of this book. Alex was everywhere in the second half of the book. I like her as a character but not as much to insert her everywhere. Even the Alex & Emmy friendship was such a stretch.. where did that come from?

Back in Thunder Bay we get a lot of scenes with the other couples, but I have a couple of questions regarding the plot. They discover this little girl who lived in one of the coves whose name is Athos. Where did Athos came from? Why was she living in the cove. I don't understand why she came out of nowhere. Was the point only so that Michael and Rika could adopt her? I love that Michael&Rika said adoption rights! We need more books where people adopt kids, because they need a safe home too, but it was weird.

The epilogue was lowkey cute. I love seeing all the couples with their army of kids (even though ngl these kids have weird as names… who names their kid GUNNAR, DAG? Damon Torrance who.) Damon was such a comedian in this book. One of my favorite scene was when Winter gave birth and it turned out to be another boy (Damon hoped for a baby girl) and Damon was all "are you sure there aren't any more in there or something" LOL DAMON LOL 🤣
Anyway, after that epilogue i'm pretty sure that second-gen books are coming but not anytime soon, cause hellbent series comes first (i'm lowkey scared for that series now)

In conclusion:
These kids in thunder bay don't need all these money. what they need is someone who locks them into a mental institution.

Edit: still 1 star after reading it. This book was too long and it felt like a first draft. Her editor did her dirty because this book felt like a watt pad fiction and needs tons of work of edition. Let’s start from the beginning:
-Will and Emmy flashbacks in HS were cute. Will is actually extremely sweet and caring and Emmy pov is extremely hard to tw for abuse, physical abuse and verbal abuse. Be careful. This author doesn’t do trigger warnings so therefore she doesn’t care about sensitive readers but I do so please be careful. As I said they were cute. Was it enough? No. I don’t like books based on how cute a couple is and I’ll explain later why they didn’t make sense in the end.
-Blackchurch time: we have a secluded mansion with 5 guys and one girl there. The so called alpha is a cheap and Ali express version of Damon. He is so unlikable and has a rapist by his side and their scenes together were disgusting. Aydin was unlikable and he had no redemption arc whatsoever. The whole plot of blackurch is boring, dragging and not well done. Will was a joke at this point and his relationship with emmy was so rocky and angsty i didnt feel anything. Micah and Rory are my two gays and I loved them.
-Aydin and Alex: these two. I used to like Alex but after conclave I just inew her whole purpose was to create drama. The second half of nightfall is about her and Aydin. Penelope didn’t want to write her a book and instead of accepting she is a side and should have stayed that way she gave in into her readers demandings and wrote Alex and Aydin story in will and Emmy story. Literally these two took a backseat just for Alex and Aydin to have their time and I’m sorry but I don’t care for them. It’s pretty clear the author tried to insert them at all costs to make her readers happy. But Alex is a side character and her whole presence made Emmy uncomfortable and it was a reminder of why she wasn’t enough for will. The jealousy, the competition, the angst.. it was unnecessary.
-Will and Alex: am I supposed this two never loved each other? Will was miserable until Alex got it and he was happy and like himself once she got her back. Emmy notices it and she is jealous but will decides it’s not enough with that and throws a tantrum about how he had Alex and how good she was with him when emmy wasn’t there. On top of that he starts saying she is her equal, she was there for him always making him happy and I was highly uncomfortable because it felt like love while the heroine was there. Aydin got a hold of Emmy thanks to Alex and will and took his side just bc these two idiots weren’t able to clarify they were only friends.
-the sex: believe me. I get it. I understand why people want sex and why they want orgies. The previous book has at least one scene but tbis one has THREE. THREE. Can somebody explain me what was the reason? Is thus book a sex fest and I wasn’t aware of it? Anyways, the first one I didn’t mind it. The second one was extremely annoying bc Aydin decided to make Alex moan wills name while he is there with emmy. Imagine the trauma of having sex with the love of your life and hearing his ex hook up(you are still jealous of her and not sure about her feelings) mosning your mans name. All of this led up to an extremely unnecessary drama because emmy left and took aydins side because she was pissed and sad, and I totally understand her. But again. Unnecessary drama. The last one. WHERE IS HER EDITOR? Where?. Alex and Emmy are fighting and all of the sudden are scissoring each other in front of two married couples who are having sex and a guy who is doing what? What’s the point? To make me believe they are friends? This is so stupid. You can talk with a girl, empower her and make her believe there is nothing between you and her man but according to Penelope eating pussy screams feminism and girl bonding better than actually deal and support each other with their problems. All of this while Damon and another couple are in the train hearing everything. The point again? I can pay for pornhub and I wouldn’t do it.
-The end: penelope said several times there is no second gen and yet again the epilogue left it extremely open to see this characters in the future. I can see a spin off in the end even if she said no. Which leads me to think. Does she thinks before writing? Does she think her readers are stupid and they won’t ask about second gen? You literally wrote a whole new story in just one epilogue and left it open and you expect them to shut up? She clearly doesn’t know her own readers
-Will and Damon. What’s the point? Again.
In conclusion this book was one of the most dissapointing ones I ever read. I’m glad she is leaving it behind bc it’s clear she wanted to get rid of it as soon as possible and be done by it and it shows. This book made no sense felt forced and was an orgy fest for her readers. Enjoy this mess

Not only her worst book ever but her stans and team went after a group of girls who tried to do a review and say the truth about the orgy and they didn’t stop harassing and persecuting them. This author and her stans are a bunch of bullies and they went after some girls provoking and attacking until they finally got their reviews removed so it won’t affect the promo. Never in my life I’ve been this disgusted by the witch hunt they did to this girls just because they told a scene would be problematic and hurtful.

The Devil's Night series is one of my favorite dark romance series of all time. Anything I say about it or this particular installment could never do it justice. Penelope Douglas deserves an endless amount of praise for the phenomenal job she did with this series though, so it's only right that I give it my best shot.

5Xdw

Nightfall is more than just one couple's story. It's the end of a complex storyline that has spanned across over 2,000 pages, four books, and a novella. A story that is intricate, layered, and intriguing from start to finish! Even the last lines of this book made me want to dive into the stories of the second generation of characters born into this series.

tumblr_cd4c83b80630110cf2de4e0309c479aa_03be7363_400

Unfortunately, for now, the author has no plans to give us those stories, and that truly breaks my heart. I don't know if I've ever wanted a second generation series as badly as I do this one. The world Penelope created is unlike anything else I've ever read, and I hate that this is the last time I'll ever get to experience it.

The plot of every single book in the series is perfection. Each installment is well-written, engaging, and enthralling. That being said, the characters will forever be what I love most about this series. Their personal battles, emotional scars, and multidimensional personalities are what have stolen my heart time and again.

tumblr_mysvydbwVy1s8hnhko1_500

The family the author formed amongst these individuals is one I'll never forget. Their relationships are unconventional, complicated, special, and incredibly beautiful. Their romances are angsty and breathtaking, and the sex throughout the series is fan yourself, change your panties more than once before you're through level hot!

*Skip the next three paragraphs if you don't want to hear me gush over my favorite character in the series. LOL*

Out of the entire cast of characters, Damon is the star of the show as far as I'm concerned. His character has evolved and progressed further and more spectacularly than any other, and he is by far the most complex individual character in the series. I will argue with anyone that has the nerve to dispute that fact. He's intertwined with the other characters in a variety of ways, particularly Will and every single one of the heroines.

His complicated relationships with his sisters are my favorite non-romantic relationships in the series. I loved watching them interact, and their connections grow and change over time. Damon's connection to Winter is intense and beautiful, and the similarities between himself and Emory are plain for anyone to see.

792da39183bbd76f69e6864a68d6dbf7

Will is his best friend and the brother he never had. Their relationship isn't without it's complications, but nobody can deny their strong bond or the deep love they have for one another. Aside from being the wrap up of the entire Devil's Night series, Nightfall is Will's story, and you get a lot of the Damon/Will dynamic throughout this book. If you enjoy their unique friendship, you won't be disappointed.

Out of all of the characters in this series, Will has always been the most mysterious. I never felt like I truly knew who he was at his core. To be honest, he never stood out next to the other men in the series prior to this book for me. It's one of the reasons I was so excited to finally get his story. I wanted to find out who Will was inside and out, and the author delivered. I loved that in the end, he had such an important role in the resolution of the series. He was working behind the scenes all along, and his hardwork paid off in this installment.

tumblr_mltlumW1xL1sp0i9bo1_500

Will and Emory's relationship is one I enjoyed both in the past and present. I wish we would have been able to experience more of them once they got together, but the book was already damn near 700 pages. I can certainly understand why we didn't get more than we did. Aside from that, the author had to wrap up this entire series alongside Will's individual story which couldn't have been an easy task. Was it EXACTLY what I wanted? No.

Do I think Pen could have pleased everyone when there was so much to be done and readers are invested to this level? No.

Did I enjoy the fuck out of this book? YES!

8c1eb8bc3eda3d10_black_and_white_yes_gif_find_share_on_giphy

Is it as intriguing, hot, dark, and captivating as the rest of the series? Absolutely!

Is it worth the read? Hell yes!

Did the author do an incredible job with Will's story and the ending to this series? Without question!

Would I recommend it? Fuck yes! It's a necessity if you love this series or dark romance in general. A fantastic end to one of the most amazing series I've ever had the pleasure of reading!

Thank you, Penelope Douglas, for this masterpiece. I'll be forever grateful to you for writing the way you do with unique storylines and morally gray characters that push our boundaries and for giving me one of my favorite characters and series of all time.

Fans of the Devil's Night series and just damn good dark romance, this one's for you!

Maybe it’s easier to see everything as just good or bad, with no shades of gray in between? Maybe that’s why we live in a society that has grown increasingly unforgiving when people make mistakes or are seen as less than perfect? What I love about this series by Penelope Douglas is that she confronts the truth: people are complicated. People are not just good or bad. We all have light and darkness within us. And that can be discomfiting and a little scary.

Sometimes this series (the last two books in particular) has made me uneasy. Pen’s characters are extremely psychological which is what makes this series stand out from others in the genre. There is real, gritty, raw character development. Nuance, history, the examination of nature vs nurture, is everything when asking a reader to root for anti-heroes and Penelope understands this so completely. This is a world about a group of people who are fundamentally good but have been twisted and damaged by the evil in others. In turn, they’ve made mistakes, committed crimes, done some terrible things, in order to wrestle back control and keep the people they love safe. I have not always liked the anti-heroes and anti-heroines of this series or the things they’ve done, but I’ve been challenged by Pen to understand them and to care for them despite their flaws. Would I forgive these people if they were real and not fictional? I'd forgive them in the paranormal genre. That genre is built on the love of anti-heroes. But its fantasy. This is contemporary. Therein lies the nuance. As I said, sometimes Devil's Night has been an uncomfortable read and if I'm honest I'm still, even after finishing it, questioning what I just read and how I feel about it. Penelope is so bloody clever, her characters so multi-faceted, and her writing is so addictive, that she made me vested in them. All the stories that have stayed with me over the years are the ones that challenged my view of the world and the people in it.

Nightfall for me is a book of two halves. With a very Lord of the Flies (though sexier) vibe, Pen pulls readers into the mysterious world of Blackchurch and the even more mysterious past between Will and Em. The second half is as much the rest of the horsemen’s story as it is Will and Em’s as the series plot arc comes full circle. I loved that. I loved seeing the group come together.

There seem to be some readers who have jumped to conclusions about something Pen said online. ***SLIGHT SPOILER AHEAD. For clarification, there is no orgy scene between one woman and a bunch of prisoners. There is a group scene, not group sex, and while it definitely pushed me out of my comfort zone as a reader, the scene is between a few of the couples in the series and completely consensual.***

For me this series is truly about soul mates and not just in the romantic sense of the word. It’s about people who stray outside the boundaries of a no-shades-of-gray society, who all feel the call of the void, and find peace and happiness in finding others who not only understand them but accept what makes them different.

Addictive, sexy, challenging and darkly psychological. Penelope Douglas is the queen of dark romance.

I absolutely love this series. Will is the horseman who kind of is always in the background and who I've always felt the least connected to. I was really excited for his story and to see how this series would wrap up.

The beginning of this book just dumps you into the story as Emmy wakes up at Blackchurch in a house with five dangerous men. And no way out. Will is one of those guys and I was living for their reconnection after not seeing each other for nine years. In true Penelope Douglas fashion, there is a lot of chasing and running and fighting and insane sexual tension between our main characters. We get Emmy waking up at Blackcurch alternating with chapters in the past before Devil's Night with Will and Emmy's initial relationship developing during high school. As the story went on, though, I felt myself getting bored with both storylines and felt like things were being dragged out too much.

There are a ton of characters in this series and they all come together for the second half of this book. I felt like Will and Emmy's relationship kind of went on the back burner while the rest of this story was told, yet I still didn't feel connected to the other characters. The other guys at Blackchurch were kind of just there and I wanted to know more of them. I also thought some of the steamier scenes were just there to be there and weren't actually serving a purpose to the story or the relationship development. Especially with the scene on the train, it felt kind of forced and out of place.

Overall, this one is my least favorite of the series. I'm giving it 3.5 stars, but didn't enjoy it enough to bump it up to 4 stars. This is the longest book in the series and really didn't need to be. I wanted more time spent on Will and Emmy and less spent on all of the characters and the drama with all of the characters together. I guess as the last book, time needed to be spent wrapping everything up, but that ended up taking away from our main couple. I still love this series so much, but this book wasn't what I wanted it to be.

3.5 STARS!

I love Penelope's writing! she has a talent for writing stories that always manages to take me out of the comfort zone and surprising characters that swing between normalcy and psychopathy - and of course this book was no different... 👏
I must point out that Will was not a character that particularly intrigued me - but the book started with such a crazy bang, that for a moment I got dizzy!!! 💥💣

📚 “𝗜 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗜 𝗺𝗮𝘆 𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗺 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗻𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘆𝗼 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗯𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗜 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗶𝘁 𝗜 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗜’𝗹𝗹 𝘄𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘂𝗽 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗲𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗺𝘆 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗽𝘂𝗿𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗲, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗜 𝘄𝗼𝗻’𝘁. 𝗜 𝘀𝗹𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗮 𝗯𝗮𝗯𝘆 𝗮𝘁 𝗻𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁.”
“𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝘁𝘄𝗼 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗿𝘆?” 📚

Emory Scott wakes up in the middle of nowhere, in a place called Blackchurch - which is a kind of a prison facility - with five other guys. 😱
She has no idea how she got there or why, but she knows one of the guys, Will Grayson. ❤
Emory is the reason Will went to jail 7 years ago and now they finally meet again... Will has every reason to hate her for what she did to him in the past, but he always had a weakness for her... and despite everything, it's still exists. 💥

📚 "...𝗪𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗲𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗶𝗳 𝘄𝗲’𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘁.” 📚

I'll start from the end - this book was almost 5 stars for me, ALMOST. ❤
I loved the complex characters, the bold and dark plot and the closure, but... I wanted MORE from Will and Emmy. 😬
After the middle of the book, it didn't feel like their story - because somehow, the secondary characters cast a shadow over the main ones. ❤

I know that this is the last book in the series and Penelope had to close all ends, but by referring to everything around, I felt she somewhat neglected the main thing - the chemistry between Will and Emmy.
I felt it in the "past" chapters but I did not feel it in the "present" ones, and I was disappointed, mainly because of the amazing beginning of this book. In my opinion, she could have published a spin-off book about these characters...

I must also refer to the train scene. In my opinion, it was a bit pointless and didn't contribute to the plot, but I was not surprised or shocked by it - after all, I have already read the previous books in the series... 😂
So yeah, it wasn't really logical - but heck, someone bring me clean panties ASAP!!!! 🔥🔥🔥

📚 “𝗜 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝘆 𝗜’𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁. 𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗵𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗸. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗾𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗸. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗸. 𝗪𝗲’𝗿𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝘆𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗲𝗹𝘀𝗲. 𝗜 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗺𝗲...” 📚

This book was like a roller coaster ride in an abandoned scary park. It had dark and dirty scenes... action and mystery... moments that made me smile and chilling moments that made me gasp - and yes, there were also moments when I felt a little bored. 😬
I loved the flashback scenes from high school, I loved the dynamics of the team and how they stood up for each other and also fought one other, but most of all...? I LOVED DAMON!!! (Damn, what a genius character he is. Someone should give Penelope a reward for creating him!) 💥👑🔥

📚 "𝗕𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗴𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗮𝗹𝘁𝘆." 📚

This is the last book in 'Devil's Night' and it was a great ending to a dark, dirty and super original series. True - it wasn't my favorite book in the series because its plot was a bit scattered, but I enjoyed the ride.
if you like dark, crazy, corrupted books - this is the series for you!!! ❤❤❤

TRIGGER WARNING

So the definition of "LOVE" in this series is that once confessed, they HAVE to fuck/touch/kiss someone from the gang.
Corrupt - Rika uses the word love, threesome with Kai.
Hideaway - The word "Love" was not used yet but still we got a scene where Rika and Banks were making out and then Michael and Kai join them. I didn't want to leave them out of the party.
Kill Switch - Winter uses the word love, threesome with Will. (Will can touch winter and all but just can't put his dick inside her)
Hideaway - Emory used the word love, Later she fucks Alex in front of EVERYONE except Damon and Winter. Also let's not forget in the past where Will uses the L word and gets a blowjob from Damon while Emmy watches.

So you see the pattern here, so IF you are okay with that then you might enjoy the series. But the thing is I was not. When you use the word Love that means THEY ARE IT! NO ONE ELSE MATTERS. You don't need to fuck someone else to make them realize that they love you, you dont need to fuck someone to get the others attention. This was why even though I loved "Hideaway" and "Kill Switch" I just couldn't give those two books more than four stars.

Since I got that out of the way let's talk about Nightfall.
I should NEVER keep expectations for an upcoming book. And this is all on me. It's just how the characters reacted or behaved during certain scenes pissed me off. I am so confused right now with this book. There were parts I liked and parts I HATED.

Plot
Emory wakes up in Blackchurch with no memory of how she got here. A place where the rich send their spoiled kids to be disciplined. There she meets Will (one of the 5 men living in the house) who she hasn't seen in nine years since he went to jail for beating up a cop (the cop was Emory's brother). No one knows why she is there, or at least no one was willing to share the information with her, she had to wait for 29 days until the cleaners would come to clean the house to make her escape. Until then she is stuck in their with 4 dangerous strangers and Will who hates her.

Now we get to read Will and Emmy's past and present.

The past was kind of boring honestly, It was from when they both were still in high school and how Will tried so hard to get Emory's attention, I was either skipping or sobbing during the scenes where Martin abused Emmy and sometimes smiling thanks to Will. The whole banter between them was basically repetitive, Will will be all cute and nice to her and Emory would just say something bitchy to him. Sometimes would give into Will but then go Cold on him the next day. It was very frustrating because of the way she treated Will. But then to some extend I understood why she wanted Will to stay away because of her brother. So every time Emory's response pissed me off I would make excuses for her, even though sometimes I wanted to slap her repeatedly for saying shit to a guy like Will.

There were times where Emory finally did something good, like when she went to homecoming to surprise Will after being a bitch to him. She did try, I know she wanted to be with Will and it was her brother holding her back so I did try to be understanding and give her the benefit of the doubt.

Let's talk about the present Emory who I had a hot and cold relationship with. Nine years passed by since Will went to jail because of HER. Nine years of Will ruining himself and Emory feeling guilty about it (as per her) but never ONCE reached out to him. The only reason Will and Emmy even happened now was because she somehow ended up in Blackchurch. She was otherwise just too busy living her own life while Will was busy ruining his, something she was well aware of and kept on throwing on Will's face. Every time she would get jealous or pissed at Will she STILL would say harsh things to him. The past I made up excuses for her because she was an abused teenager but now she was a full on adult who was living her OWN life away from her brother. She had enough time to change herself. But she didn't. But THANK GOD ALEX WAS THERE TO SHUT EMMY UP. GOD I LOVE THAT WOMAN.

“You were always pathetic,” I told him, sneering. “You know that? Always so naïve and clueless and pathetic.”
A smack landed on my face, the sting spreading across my cheek and blood seeping into my mouth where it cut on my teeth.”

Yup, I love Alex. And sometimes I wish she was Will's love interest.

But then there were moments where I felt bad for Emory when I read things like this

“While you’ve been buried in this,” he told Will, “she’s been sad and sorry.”
His eyes flashed to me, and Will stood there frozen, while Alex quickly fastened her pants.
“It’s plain as day who really suffered during your time apart,” he bit out. “She owes you nothing.”

“Do what you want, Emory,” he told me. “It’s okay.”
My heart splintered a little more, and I looked away, shaking my head. What I would have given for Will to say that just once. Or my brother.”

“If Will or Martin had given me freedom, I would’ve wanted them more. That was all he had to do. He just had to let me come to him. Like the Homecoming dance.”

So yeah I sympathized with her but at the same time was really frustrated with her. I wanted to read about a different Emory during the present time, I wish she had changed over the years and had become a different person. A better version of her past self. Sadly that did not happen. Which leads me to my next point, Why was Will so in love with her? I finished the book and still don't have a proper answer. I just know that Will has always been in LOVE with her but WHY? What did he see in her? I failed to understand.

Now let's just talk about this scene okay. They have escaped Blackchurch thanks to the horsemen and their wives/girlfriends. Will tells everyone that Emmy was the reason they all actually went to jail, yes the videos was leaked by Travis but something else happened behind the scenes. And he got to know about it from HIS grandfather and not Emory himself, so he is angry at her for never trusting him and telling him about it, also about Martin's abuse and for never contacting him all these years. He does not believe she can ever be part of the group and is finally deciding to let her go.

BUT THEEEEEEEEEN the Alex and Emory scene I mentioned in the start happened. One minute Emory was apologizing to everyone and saying she will try to earn their trusts the next minute she is shouting at everyone that they don't deserve her. Alex gets pissed and is like "TAKE OFF MY CLOTHES" which leads to both of them fucking while Will and everyone else watch. It was like a swingers party? or Orgy? I don't know what the correct term to use here is but like everyone started fucking their significant other while watching Alex and Emory.

“Will?” I panted, keeping my eyes closed as she sucked. “I want to be in one of your videos.”
Let me put it on the line like them right now, and no going back.
Alex groaned. “You sure?” she taunted. “You want a video of you fucking me?”

So after this scene Will concludes that Emory is ACTUALLY ONE OF THEM! YAY!

“She fit with us.
She was made for us.”

yes, I can see that. Wow.
Again WHY COULDN'T THIS HAPPEN BEFORE EMORY SAID SHE LOVES WILL. Now you can argue with me that, we know they both love each other even if they don't confess it, so what is the big deal? Yes I know, but I feel like confessing is a huge deal in a relationship and should not be taken so lightly. So scenes like this is a deal breaker FOR ME when it happens AFTER the confession.

Anyway lets also look at the good aspects of the book
The epilogue was extremely cute, Damon being called the hug machine by his son 😂😂
I just loved the bond between the Horsemen and when they came to save Will, OH GOD THAT SCENE!! 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

“Same parties. Same girls,” Michael mumbled. “I’m fucking bored.”
“I know.” Kai let out a sigh. “I’m feeling it, too. I need something to happen.”
“Something to obsess over,” Michael added.
And then Damon chimed in. “We should kill someone.”

Yes, Damon will forever be my favorite horsemen.

To some of the cute moments between Emory and Will

“I’m marrying you,” I whispered.
He nodded. “’Bout time you caught up.”
I started to laugh, diving in and kissing him, cheers going off at the tavern.”

“I actually don’t know how to dance,” I told him.
I’d never done this before.
Taking my waist, he pulled me in, and I gasped, my arms instinctively wrapped round his neck.
“Put your feet on mine,” he said.
Without argument, I stepped up on his shoes in my pink heels, happy to just hold on. Tipping my head back, I looked up at him as he held me close and started moving, turning in a slow circle and box-stepping small enough for me to easily follow.
“You look beautiful,” he said.

I might come back later and change the rating from 2.5 to 3, IDK I am just so confused. I know I did NOT love this book but because of certain scenes I can't say I HATE this book, because I did cry and smile sometimes. So I am stuck in between. But I can say that Will and Emory deserved SO MUCH BETTER....

I fell in love with this series, when I read the first book, but I fell in love with Penelope Douglas' writing long before that. Fall Away is one of my favorite series, which I read over and over again.

Now I was never a huge Rika fan, but since I loved everyone else in this series so much, I could deal. With each book, everything just got better and better. I even fell head over heels in love with Damon, which I never would have thought after reading Hideaway... where I fell in love with Kai 9f01372377900d9203bc4efe48eb1659 Yes... I love both of them... don't judge.

no judging gif - Google Zoeken

Now Will, he has always been my favorite though. The quiet and playful bad boy. I figured he had some pretty deep waters and I figured out of all of them, he would love the hardest. I was so wrong on that account though. Because out of all, in the end, Damon was the one who loved the hardest...

who would have thunk gif - Google Zoeken

Now Emmy has never really played a part in all the other books. We have only heard her name in passing, but from what I heard, I figured I was gonna love her. I mean she sounded all nerdy and awesome... And she was... partly.

The flashback scenes in this book when Emmy and Will were still in high school were pretty great. Even though Emmy's "playing hard to get" attitude got on my nerves a bit, I could understand where she was coming from. Will wasn't a mindreader though...and at times it felt like she expected him to be one.

The present scenes at Blackchurch felt like they were about two completely different people though. Where were playful and awesome Will and shy and nerdy Emmy??

where did you go gif - Google Zoeken

I get that circumstance and time can change a person, but they didn't even seem like the same characters anymore. Will completely lost his enigma and Emory... I don't even know where to start. She was all over the place. She wanted Will... but then she didn't. She loved him.. but then she didn't. She was jealous.. but then she wasn't. She was mean... but then she was sorry. It was all too much to process.

Now when Alex came on stage, I was pretty confused with them knowing each other and being all "buddy-buddy" but I just tried to roll with it. I was actually glad that Emmy showed signs of jealousy though. It was completely normal...I mean I myself would have smacked a bitch, knowing she was (had been) all up close and personal with the love of my life. Will himself says that Alex has been there for him when she wasn't and that he enjoyed the hell out of her... on the beach and in the backseat of his car and so on... Him taunting her like that pissed me the hell off ... what a loser.

loser gif - Google Zoeken

Now since there are spoilers in my review, I will put the big ones under spoiler tags so other people can still enjoy this one ;)

I just wanted little Alex to pack up her shit, take Aydin and leave Blackchurch, so Will and Emmy could have the time alone they needed.

pack your shit gif - Google Zoeken

I had not expected things to escalate even further though. Ayden was a horrible character, I did not like him one bit, but he could have Alex, for all I cared. I just wish they would have gotten their own little novella, because all their bs, took time away from Will and Emmy figuring out their shit together. Almost every scene Will and Emory have has either Ayden or Alex in it or both!!! I needed them to have some `alone time` which they didn't get :(

Now I won't go into the whole plot much, because I see no point in doing so and ruining everything for anyone else, but I will say that I didn't fully get it. The whole Blackchurch thing made no sense to me... not even when it was explained at the end.

Anyways, when the gang shows up and Blackcurch is left behind we get another scene that shocked my foundation to my core...

shocked as shit gif - Google Zoeken

I again will use spoiler tags, because I am a good girl 9f01372377900d9203bc4efe48eb1659

All in all, this book did not feel "romantic" to me at all. I know all the other books had scenes in them that some people had issues with. I wasn't really one of those people. Like I said, I have never been a huge "Rika" fan but the steam room didn't really bother me. I mean Banks did kick her ass, so I was all happy about that at least.

you go girl gif - Google Zoeken

This book however had very little scenes with Will and Emmy just being together and falling in love. They were all in the past and I just needed them to have more alone time in the future. I honestly feel that Alex ruined Will and Emmy's story. I think she should have gotten her own novella. Many may not agree with me, and that's okay. I know Alex has her own personal fanbase. I was never in it though...

not a fan gif - Google Zoeken

I am however a huge fan of Damon and Winter and he once again showed me why he is my absolute favorite.

little heart gif - Google Zoeken

I love him and I love Winter for him... He is an awesome daddy ;)

I received a complimentary copy of this book.

PS: I really loved Micah and Rory ...they were awesome together ;)

***Spoilers***

I was [eɪ] . . . MM/FF virgin before this book.

Now I’m partly scandalized, somewhat intrigued, and slightly uncomfy. But mostly I’m this emoji . . . 😳

I mean, it’s Penelope Douglas. She’s done stuff since book 1. To expect otherwise is a foolish wishful thinking. If she didn’t do it, then that would be a sus and out of character. I’ve come to learn to embrace the good, the bad, and the ugly when it comes to her Hanky Panky Debauchery. It’s become one of her signature styles.

That said, the orgies didn’t bother me. In fact, I kinda sorta liked this book. And the reason for that is . . .

Will.

WILL.

WIIILLLLL.

William Aaron Paine Grayson III.

I had no clue what I wanted or who I wanted to be. I just wanted my people, and I wanted the girl of my dreams.

#ICanRelate

The boy who was an afterthought to me in the first three books. He was amazing in this book! If you know me at all, flashbacks is one of my pet peeves. But I couldn’t be more grateful for them because I feel like seeing Will with a new pair of eyes.

Those flashbacks chapters are . . . -ˋˏ G O L Dˎˊ- .

“Don’t you know that you can have anything you want?” His eyes searched mine. “I’ll hurt anyone for you.”
The weight on my chest was too heavy, it almost hurt to breathe.
“Who is it?” he asked. “Who do I have to hurt?”

He was so sweet. Loved watching him pine for Emmy, but also I hurt when he hurt because of her stubborn ass too. I’m #TEAMWILL, and I don’t like Emmy. I sympathized with her. But maybe I didn’t sympathized with her enough because . . . GAH her hot and cold, push and pull game was pissing me off.

And when her abuse scenes were repeated and kept showing up, I became frustrated (on top of feeling other more appropriate emotions). Why can’t she just trust Will and let him help?! It’s not like he didn’t offer. Bitch whyyy??? I’ll never know cause I don’t come from an abusive family. Am I being insensitive? I’m just sad and angry and annoyed.

The BLACKCHURCH

Okay, this part draggged and honestly a little boring. But I wasn’t bored because I liked Aydin, Rory, and Micah. Taylor can go suck a d*ck. I more than liked Aydin. Am I the only one who wants an Aydin-Alex novella???

Will though, I feel like he was kinda childish and bratty in this house with all his little demands of “I want her gone,” and “I want her gone!” He was like an angry bitter teenager, which was understandable.

Then Emmy. It started to sink in that I wasn’t Emmy’s biggest fan when Alex showed up. I just . . . cannot with her treating Will like shit. I know she had her reasons, but 🤬😭 That said, I loved it when he laid one on her on the train when the Horsemen rescued them.

The HORSEMEN

“You either have my back,” Michael said.
“You’re at my side,” Kai continued.
“Or you’re in my way,” the rest of us finished.
“Be Lilith,” the girls said.
Athos pulled the Red Death over her eyes, all of us setting off as she whispered. “Never Eve.”

Orgies aside, I loved everything after the Blackchurch. It was just bittersweet seeing the crew all over again and this being the last book in the series. :( Michael and Rika didn’t irritate me. Loved Kai and Banks always. Damon being his mighty self and Winter. OMG even Misha and Ryen. 💗

I’m proud of Will. I feel like he proved himself in this book. I loved seeing him come out sort of like the leader of the group—impressing them and giving them surprises. Also, that epilogue was the best. I love these characters and I’m going to miss them. Looking forward to re-reading the series maybe October next year?

Happy Halloween!! 🎃

FAVORITE QUOTES & PASSAGES

1.
Emory Scott hated me, but she hated nearly everyone. So, she was making me work for it. So what? I’d be disappointed if she didn’t. She didn’t respect Michael, Kai, or Damon, either. It shouldn’t hurt.
But it did.
I always liked her. I always looked for her.
And over the years, passing her in the halls and feeling her in the classroom next to me, she got hot as fuck in ways no one else seemed to notice but me.
God, she had a mouth on her. I loved her attitude and her anger, because I was always too warm and I needed the ice.
It made me smile.
But I also saw things no one else did. The cute way she’d trip over a sidewalk slab or walk straight into a mailbox, because her eyes were lost in the trees over her head instead of watching where she was going.
How she’d push her grandmother in her wheelchair down to the village, both of them smiling and eating ice cream together. Emmy would hold her hand the whole time they sat.
The way she worked so hard, all by herself, without anyone to keep her company on her creative projects around town.
There was so much there that people didn’t see. She shouldn’t be alone all the time.
But Damon was right. She’d never be on my arm. She’d never let her guard down.

2.
Because every time I closed my eyes, I saw the girl who made me want to be better. More.
I saw Emmy Scott.
Alex was like Damon. They loved me. They indulged my dark side.
They were too forgiving and too enabling.
They kept me from being lonely, but Emory taught me that not everything I wanted was going to come easy. That there were things I was going to have to fight for and there was pain in the world that my shallow lifestyle in high school kept me ignorant of.
She made me feel like a man.
Even though her words were sharp and the battle she constantly fought in her heart felt like a knife in my own, her eyes on me made me feel strong.
Her arms around me made me want to take on anything.
When I closed my eyes, I saw a girl with glasses too big for her face, and I heard the sweetest, most timid voice asking me if I still wanted to hold her.
I could still feel her cradled in my arms.

3.
I’d loved Emory since the moment I laid eyes on her when I was fourteen.
I could still see her—sitting on her bike outside the chain-link fence surrounding the school parking lot as she watched my friends and me on our skateboards that summer.
From that moment on, it seemed I was always aware of her, and everything I did, I did it with it in mind that she was watching.
Every joke in class. Every strut into the lunchroom. Every new haircut and every new pair of jeans.
Even the Raptor. My first thought when my parents bought it was how she’d look in it.
This stupid fantasy of her running to my truck after school, smiling and skipping at my side, unable to keep her hands off me because I was her boyfriend and I always took my girl home from school.
I hated that she was alone. She was always alone, and she shouldn’t have been, because she should’ve been with me.
But the older she got, the angrier she got, and the more desperate I got in trying to forget her, and I just needed this to be over.
Nothing got better with her. It just decayed.
She was never going to lie in my arms in a bed that belonged to both of us.

4.
Unbelievable.
Peering between their shoulders, I met her eyes once more. “I reached for you,” I told her. “In my head, all these years. Even after you dumped me like trash and I couldn’t fall out of love with you no matter how much I drank and snorted, my brain reached for you always.”
She remained frozen, not faltering as she stared at me.
“When nothing gave me a reason to get out of bed, my friends were falling in love, making babies, and I felt so alone…” I choked on the tears in my throat I wouldn’t let loose. “What do you think was the only thing that made me keep breathing?” My tone hardened as I clenched my jaw. “In my brain, I reached for you. I never stopped reaching for you.”
And she let her brother tell my family that, not only did I not love her, but I passed her around for my friends to abuse like she was nothing.
When she was everything.
I hardened my voice. “Get the fuck out of my face,” I gritted out. “And it’s fine if you want to get the fuck off the train, too. Go, run back to him.”
I won’t reach for you anymore.

You can find this review of Nightfall on my blog, Heart's Content!

Warning: This review is going to be long. This book was gigantic and there are a lot of things I have to say. Also, I've tried to put down as many trigger warnings as I could note, but this is my first time writing one because the book does not have it so I may have missed out a few, so if you're trying out this series, please do also check out more experienced bloggers' opinions for their trigger warnings. They're probably better at pointing them out.

This book was ... well, it was the longest that I have ever waited for a book in my life. Five years. Five years. I think anybody who waited for Will's book was basically practicing everything from mindfulness to Zen-like patience because Will is the one character who left a mark on everyone from the very first book when he lit a gazebo and all of our curiosities up on fire at the same time.

This series is dark, difficult and it tests and pushes a lot of boundaries. It's like those shows on Netflix that you never think you'd ever watch, until you do and there's just something enthralling about them that manages to sort things out in your head and put some puzzles pieces together. It takes grey characters, holds them up to the world, sheds light on all their darkness but also their pain and their goodness. Everyone is the hero of their stories, but perhaps a villain in someone else's.

However, Will? He was probably the only one that remained a real heart-moving character for me throughout the series. His pain, fears and spiralling state has been ever present at the back of everyone's minds as they read the first three books and he was one of the characters that we remain in the dark about about everything. We see brightness and light dipped in sadness when he is around, but we know nothing else about him.

So, when the release date for Nightfall was announced, there was an uproar in all of our hearts and countdowns and theories and excitement and anticipation that spread through all of our conversations through the fifty odd days of wait.

Finally, when the book hit our hands, I spent the whole time with my eyes glued to my Kindle (thank you wireless delivery) and the first half of the book really really worked so beautifully for me.

Will is everything that I would expect of the description that the blurb gives us. The more we stay in his head in the present, the more I see his patient calculated steps towards his goals. He was stalking his future with precise moves, quiet secrets and unending perseverance and determination. Of course, my favourite part was the contrast between Will from the past and Will from the present. My favourite part of Pen's writing is when she works her magic on a character's personality. She can write a character in all their greyness and all their glory so well that it's wonderful to watch that unfold. Will was not what you'd expect from a Horseman, but it worked so beautifully and he was so heart-warming and throughout the book, I was alternatively proud and touched by William Aaron Paine Grayson III. The boy deserved it all.

Emmy...Now Emmy was the Damon of this book. She was the one who caused the pain, who was in pain and who was both hurting on the inside and lashing out on the outside. Her past was heartbreaking and her present painted the utter greyness of her character really well. We're completely in the dark about her and we don't find out until much later what happened.

However. However. Given how Nightfall is the last of the series and the fulcrum of literally everything that comes together, the plot of this book is the most heaviest part of it as the second half of the book starts up. When a plot is this prominent, there is no way that you can look away from the screen. Pen manages to collect all the threads from book one, two and three and weaves them beautifully into a beautiful braid that makes the book just blow you apart at certain points. I loved seeing the whole series coming together, Will coming into his own (gosh, the goosebumps) and the twists and turns.

...but. *lets out a breath* But, when a book that speaks about grey characters and has to redeem them and bring them together in a way that is very very convincing to the readers has such a heavy plot ... there are chances that the character/redemption arc falls out of focus in the face of the plot. To me, it felt as if because of how important it was to pull the story to a close, the characters got overlooked. There were also another well-loved character that required their own ending and this book was just pulled along too many directions for the actual characters of the story to have space for a natural growth into themselves and their relationship. Two pages did not change for me why the person who'd made a mistake was forgiven. I was not... convinced. And as much as it pains me to say this, this reduced the rating greatly for me. We are in it for the plot, definitely, but we're also into it for the characters. We here to see them as much as we're here for everything to come together. This was one of my biggest worries, that being the last of the series, the balance will slip to support the 'ending of a series' more than the story of the people in it.

My rating is 3.75. I wish with all my heart it was higher. The epilogue definitely raised it for me, but the imbalance won out because it left me feeling like a big part of the book was missing. I'm going to write the trigger warnings for this book, do expand to read or skip if you don't wish to know.

I guess It's time to think clearly before trying any books by this author anymore. I am tired of all the absurd plots.

What would you do when you wake up in a completely unknown place? Also, find a stranger?
You freaking run, right? But according to the author, you first have a conversation with the unknown guy, make sure to remind the readers how predatory he is and then get all the information and run. But when you run they guys will chase u. But compare them to wolves because human males aren't alpha enough.

This book was pure torture and a joke. Every time Emory gets anxious she is about to pee her pant.

When Alex came into the picture I was totally confused. I had no idea Emmy knew her. I was checking that it it's really Emmy's point of view or Wills. But how they knew each other was later revealed but it was just not shocking but confusing not in a good way.

Emory annoyed me too. I felt she was too hard on herself and on everyone. At first, she was interesting, and then slowly towards the end I was tired of her hypocrisy. It was irritating how she treated Will. Her attitude towards Alex also annoyed me. And how she acted as if she is better than Micheal, Rika, Banks, Kai, Damon, and Winter.

The previous books had one orgy but in this book, it has three. The threesome and orgies happened at strange times and it's very weird for the characters changing color like lizards. Emory sees will masturbate and the one of the prisoner Taylor. Both scene were really uncomfortable. When Will masturbates Aydin was telling her how she wants him. Micah and Rory had sex while Will and Emmy watch, a few moments later Will pleasure Emmy orally in the same room Micha and Rory and Micah even talked to Emmy between that time.

There is a scene where Will and Emmy fucked in front of Alex and Aydin. And guess what... Emmy and Alex also had a long conversation about what Emmy will do to Alex if they will have sex while Will fucked Emmy and Aydin pleasured Alex. And then Aydin demanded Alex to moan Wills's name because he is piece of shit. I was literally laughing with all these ridiculousness.

Emory was jealous and threatened by Alex because of how close Alex and Will were. What does Emory do? She gave all of Wills friend a naked show with Alex and then scissors each other, Michel fucks Erika and kai fingers banks and Will watches. The weird thing is Banks and Emmy didn't even talk before that and Emmy didn't even know her name. What was the point of this scene? to make sure they are friends? I think there are other ways to do that. Just talk to her, empower her. But it seems according to the author the only way women can empower others and feel empowered by having orgies.

The hero's in this series are super possessive but how they are okay having orgies, letting their friends see the heroines; naked in front of others? Almost everyone in this group had orgies, got naked together.

And Aydin is the most awful character. he didn't even grovel. He did bad stuff and never actually apologized for them. and the group accepts him because of Alex. Besides Alex also deserved better than Aydin.

The only good thing is the flashback of Will and Emmy. But everything else was disappointing, even the main plot was ridiculous. Everyone in this book needs a therapist. And why the hell this book is so long? It's just filled with fillers and orgies.

And I guess there will be second-generation books? I smell spin-offs. Will already mentioned the second generation while talking to Damon about his child. Also Athos? Her whole identity wasn't revealed and her character is kind of mysterious. And also Madden and Octavia?  Especially the ending with Athos and the kids specify for sequels or spin-offs.

WHAT THE HELL WAS THIS BOOK???? How the HELL am I back to the rating I gave the first book in the series??? *cries into oblivion*

My feelings and expectations were crushed by it. I'm so disappointed and sad that I want to cry of frustration.

Chapter 34 was a NIGHTMARE.

And even though that clouded and tainted my perception of the rest of the book, no, it wasn't only that. It was everything. There are so many bad and insulting things about this book that I don't even know where to start.

*From this point on, this review contains spoilers*

Will and Emory had so much potential and were supposed to be so good, but this... this ain't shit. There wasn't a start to their relationship, we were thrust into their past as if we already knew why he was so into her and chased her everywhere, but truth was, I never even understood, because there wasn't an explanation, he just happened to notice her all the time and be attracted to her for whatever reason. And yes, I was already into them from previous books so at first it didn't bother me, I liked the flashbacks, but then I started realizing that I knew this already. I knew their dynamic from previous books, so what I was looking for was the start of it all. The beginning. And a single. Fucking. Reason. An explanation as to why they were so into each other in the first place, at least how they met! There was just one comment, like one or two paragraphs in Will's pov that talked about the first time he saw her. But it was so vague that I was more frustrated at the fact that it wasn't deigned even a small flashback chapter than anything else.

So basically you enter this book having to know that these protagonists are special to each other and somehow really want each other. Fuck any explanation about it. And even worse is the fact that she always rejects and hurts him, so what is THE REASON that he keeps trying? That he's in love with her??? But how??? When did this happen???? Who the fuck knows . And not only that, but also in the present there is no development. Not in their relationship, not in them as individual characters... it's just... forgotten. Forgotten and replaced for the focus on characters no one cares about, like... oh I don't know... maybe Alex and Aydin!!!

Where is my Will Grayson from Kill Switch??? My second favourite character??? The one that gave this book such big potential just by promising to be the protagonist?? I guess he disappeared along with this book's potential. Yes, that's right, both gone as soon as Kill Switch ended.

Some flashbacks were so good (if you were already into this couple from previous books of course, because the book doesn't give you any beginning to their relationship, as I already said and will keep remarking), and you could probably see their chemistry in some -either that or I was grasping to any thin thread I could hold on to for a little while at least-, but that was quickly buried down by the rest of the book... And here's the next problem.

Half of this book was Will's and Emory's and half of it was everyone else's. And it was SOO. UNNECESSARY. LOOOOONG.

The Blackchurch plot didn't deliver. It felt weak and unnecessary, and it didn't develop Emmy's and Will's relationship at all. In fact, they felt so OOC that I became frustrated and even disgusted. The couple, I'm sad to admit, was ruined for me, but not only that, it also felt like it was being paid dust?!?!?!? Like for the sake of developing whoever-cares-about-it plots of new and old side characters, Will and Emmy's relationship was set aside, and only brought up in relation to other characters??? At some point Michael appeared more interesting than them. And this is coming from a person that firmly believes Michael has the personality and presence of a plant, so imagine my experience. And Alex... oh Alex. The downfall of this book. I used to like her, but as a side character and I truly felt the shove-down-our-throats Pen pulled with this one, turning her into a main character. And relating her more to Emmy than Will, which made no sense at all.

And I'm not even gonna get into detail about chapter 34 because I'm traumatized and depressed enough about it, but I AM going to talk about all the poly sex scenes in this book?? I mean are you serious??? I really thought the perv FB fans didn't have that much power over this author and I am disappointed to see that, even if it was really not fanservice and I happen to be wRoNG in this assumption, it sure as hell does look like it. WHY so many poly sex scenes?? And why objectify Will and Damon even more with unnecessary flashbacks?? We know they've been with each other in the past a few times to forget everything. We got one of these scenes in Kill Switch, we don't need more of it to understand. It only serves the purpose of objectifying them more and adding smut just for the hell of it!! Or maybe... to give the FB fans what they asked for. And ugh... I said I wouldn't talk about this chapter so I'm not going into detail but WHY do you have to make the protagonist have sex with another girl to "make the other girl feel cared for"? Especially a protagonist that doesn't trust ANYONE and literally knew 2 out of the 6 other people in the room. Are you telling me she doesn't even trust "the love of her life," Will, yet but is okay with giving his friends -that, again, she doesn't even know- a naked sex show with a girl that she has no romantic connection to? WHO APPROVED THIS?? Couldn't they talk and bond without literally having sex in front of fucking everyone? And how does this make Will love Emory more??? It's disgusting and it tainted the whole book. I'm just thankful that Damon and Winter weren't part of it and they were just in their own perfect happy world together.

I just don't understand if this author was pressured to write a great ending, a book that was as good or better than Kill Switch (which turned out to be a surprisingly good book), and that was interfered by what the fans were asking for and by all the plot points she had to close or whatever... and this somehow came out as the result?? I don't know, but it looks like a full mess and it doesn't even deliver a bit on what Will and Emmy deserved. As characters and as a couple.

AND ARE YOU REALLY TELLING ME THE EPIC WILLxWINTERxDAMON REUNION WAS JUST TWO SMALL HUGS AND THAT'S IT????? They were the fucking best, most powerful trio of Kill Switch -possibly of the ENTIRE SERIES- and they care about each other more than anyone else, are you really expecting me to believe they did nothing after they got Will??? BULLSHIT! Why build such a relationship in Kill Switch and then pay it DUST. But again, Will and Emmy were supposed to be the main couple of this book and they were even paid dust, so why am I surprised.

However, I want to make a shout-out to my KING Damon Torrance who remained untainted and was the only happiness that this book could give me. Him and my precious queen Winter, who also remains untainted.

Damon and Winter remain the superior characters and superior couple. And Kill Switch will remain the superior book in the whole series. However, I am sad and disappointed mostly at this book for not being able to succeed the previous book well and just taint such great characters and what could have been a great ending.

But most of all, I am disappointed in an author I really liked and admired so much. The worst part is, I'm not even mad at her, I'm just crushed and disappointed because I trusted and believed in her. And she delivered.... *winces* this.

It took me a whole day but I FINISHED!! This was such a long book but I literally couldn’t put it down! I’m still debating my rating but it’s either 4 or 4.5 stars. This was truly the epic finale we’ve all been waiting for. I’m devastated this is the end for this cast of characters, but epilogue does leave us with a little something to expect in the future 👀

And in the end, all that I’ll remember is that I came out of this series loving Damon a little bit more...

Seriously can we appreciate his character growth and development? Can we appreciate how he’s the only one who is not a brat? I don’t care that this is Will’s book, *honestly I don’t think that even Will cared that this is his book* I freakin enjoyed those moments of Damon, him and Emory, and everything he has done. He’s the best thing that has ever happened to this series.

As for Emory and Will, I kind of didn’t care about them at all? It just felt like they were riding in the backseat in their own book. I always saw Will as that vulnerable character that needs love and protection, I wish we get to see that side of him in the present chapters, but we get that weird version of him instead.

I really liked the past chapters of them tho. Those were enjoyable, so cute, and Will was kinda sweet. The present chapters tho were really weird. The book dragged a lot. Unnecessarily. And it’s worth mentioning that throughout this series we moved from one weird out of character out of place sex scene per book to multiple ones in this one that felt so forced and the book would’ve survived happily without them.

“You either have my back....”

“You’re at my side....”

“Or you’re in my way...”

“Be Lilith, Never Eve.”

The Hero(s): Will Grayson – Will has been seen as the lush of the group in previous books, but there is much more to him. He doesn’t know what he wants in life, he thinks he is less than his friends because he doesn’t have ambition like Michael, or determination like Damon or a set path in life like Kai. He has been in love with Emory for years but she rebuffed his advances and he went to Jail for beating her abusive brother who was a cop.

The heroine: Emory - This is the first book Emory appears in, though she has been referred to in prior books. We knew she was abused by her brother but in this book we get to know her and we see how bad the abuse was and how it shaped her and her actions.

The Love Story: Will was shipped away by his family to a place called Blackchurch. It is a hidden place where the ultra wealthy send their kids who can’t toe the line and embarrass their families. Will first embarrassed his senator Grandfather when he went to prison and has done worse since getting out, acting as the playboy who was blowing through his inheritance on alcohol, drugs and hookers. Emory is drugged and kidnapped and wakes up at Blackchurch.

The story of Emory being kidnapped to Blackchurch is interesting, since it means someone is either out to get Will or out to get Emory (or both). That person not only knows about Will’s past with Emory but also knows where Blackchurch is, which is not an easy thing, since it moves every few years and is a closely guarded secret.

Blackchurch itself and the guys there were interesting as well. There was the Alpha (Aydin) who seems nice sometimes but others seems like a ruthless dictator. Also, Will seems weak when we first see him, since he just takes it. Will seems to want to help and stand up for the weaker guys but he just defers to Aydin.

The narration was terrific and I am not quite sure if it is just because I have really gotten used to these two narrators since this is the 4th book in the series I have listened to or if they have just gotten progressively better with each book, but I am really enjoying these audiobooks.

The different storylines were great. Will has some secret agenda, whomever kidnapped Emory had an agenda and there were all the issues from the past. Not to mention Alex, the hooker who is now in their group of friends, which they all consider their family. We know that Alex was in love with Will as well. The homoerotic scenes between Damon and Will are every bit as hot as the intimate scenes between Will and Emory.

They stole my heart.
I feel like I cried the whole time but I loved every second of it. I was addicted to the story and couldn't stop reading for more that 10 minutes.
The flashbacks were amazing and I was really suprised to see that Will was the sweetest Horsemen. Even in the 'present' part, he was calm.
I was shocked to see Emory as such a savage. I always thought she was this sweet nerd that keeps her head down. Joke's on me, because she deserves her place in the family.

3.25 STARS⭐️

It’s really impossible to cover ALL of my notes in here so I’m just gonna highlight a few of em, aight. It’s a mess btw

▪️To say that I didn’t enjoy this last instalment would be a lie bcs I actually really did (to a certain degree heh). Although I didn’t think it was as thrilling and had-me-at-the-edge-of-my-seat as I experienced with Hideaway and maybe bcs of that, I ended up finishing this a little later than I expected. This book was definitely too long for me and I swear I kept dozing off 40% into it zzz.

▪️I certainly fell in love with Will bcs let’s admit it, Will wasn’t really thaaat interesting in the first 3 books; we just know that he’s the easy going one, Damon’s ride or die and makes people laugh, that’s pretty much all. But after reading this and being able to see more of his wits and being enveloped inside his head—it’s both refreshing and saddening. His character growth was superb and i really adored him here, fr.

▪️Emory was the bravest character in here, no doubt. the shit that she went through and was still able to stand firm?? damnn. In fact, after seeing the world through her lens it made me realise that we’re quite similar (until we reach that specific scene of course...). I completely understand why she was all push/pull with Will so i didn’t have a problem w that.

▪️The plot actually felt messy and it was a bit anticlimactic by end for me. Seriously, towards the ‘reveal’ I was like

▪️HOWEVER THAT ENDING + THE EPILOGUE AAAND DAMON (just the first few pages of the epilogue ok the others were eye-roll worthy) got me all

*ALL IN ALL, I loved past chapters more and adored young Will and loved Emory BUT lets be real the stars are mostly for Damon.*

————————******————————

⚠️ SPOILER REACTION/ RANT & MORE IDK ⚠️

🔹we’ve established that I love Will right?? Ok so when he started to speak French with Emory’s grandmother……
me:OUI OUI COME TO ME
(Yes..yes im that kind of bimbo, judge me)

🔹Not to forget when Will went all;
’”And I’m your man now……….And im asking you for tonight.”

“God, I wanna knock you up…….I want to ruin you for all the times you made me think you didn’t want me. I want to give you a piece of me you’ll never be able to escape.”

“Come hell or high water, Emory Scott. You’re my woman, and you’re going to come home to me every day and shit at my table and warm my fucking bed……….And you’re going to give me a Will Grayson IV. Mark my words.”

I’m not white so like I really need to know—do 17/18 year old white young adults actually talk like this?? Bcs my 17 year old ass COULD NEVERRRR. I mean it was h0t but then once I recalled their age I just…

🔹Blackchurch is fucking JOKE. What in the hell….you made it sound like it’s a real myth and how ‘scary’/‘dangerous’ only to find out it’s just a well secluded mansion stocked with food—there’s also a gym and a pool. You even get your own comfy bedrooms. I don’t even think there’s a proper system there.
Also, why tf did they even bother to get all suit up sometimes in there? Like??? Where you going? To the toilet??

🔹Damon and Will’s….you know which scene. I guess I should’ve seen it coming since they talked abt it in Kill Switch but ion kno, man. still shocked me

🔹The orgy that happened in the shower with Ayden and Alex AND in the train…

Why, Pen? I was already rooting for Emory and suddenly she got all out of character. Im genuinely tiredddtttt of pd adding these scenes just for the heck of it.
I was even annoyed that Will finally saw Emory as one of them ONLY bcs she was okay with the orgy. Wtf is with that, huh

🔹THE FACT that PD spent MORE TIME writing the orgy scenes instead of the make up sex that went on between Will and Emory *calls my lawyer*

🔹I don’t know what you guys think about them all getting married together but I personally hated it. So that’s that.

🔹OHHHH I LOVED this one!!
that part when all of them were revealing shits, explaining what happened behind the scenes and discussing their motives + next moves WHILE their enemies -who could literally kill them right there on the spot but somehow didn’t- were surrounding them….just listening and watching...

Penelope, be honest; you were actually drained af when you wrote this scene.

🔹Honestly, I gave up once Ayden wanted to marry Alex outta nowhere. Plus, the additional characters were also just unnecessary

WILL AND EMORY??? i fell in love. from the beginning they were so SOFT towards each other, especially will<3 their love was so pure and the flashbacks were precious and everything I didn’t know I needed in this book.

“But before I could escape from his lap, he grabbed my chin in one hand and wrapped his other arm around my waist, pulling me in. Against his body, and whispering so softly no one could hear him but me.
“Don’t you know that you can have anything you want?” His eyes searched mine. “I’ll hurt anyone for you.”
The weight on my chest was too heavy, it almost hurt to breathe.
“Who is it?” he asked. “Who do I have to hurt?”

“He pulled me in, and I opened my mouth to protest, but instead of a kiss, he just pulled me into his arms, pressed my head to his shoulder, and wrapped his arms around me so tight, it felt like he was the one about to break, not me."

my favourite couple in this series by fucking farrrrr<3

Imagine the power if male and female characters were able to have a beautiful friendship without having sex??? I would like to see at least ONE author do this because I’m sick and tired. Alex and Will?? Yeah I definitely didn’t need to be constantly reminded of them having a very intimate yet casual relationship for god knows how long! They were bestfriends?? Helped each other when they were down?? Great, I love that!! but please why add sex into the mix?? And why do we have to be reminded of it in this book.

exhibit a:
“Alex was always easy to disappear into. I didn’t have to talk or put up a front. I didn’t have to seduce her or pretend.
She was my port in the storm and I was hers.
I watched her form move as she washed her legs and arms. Her hand drifted up the back of her neck, the water from the cloth dripping back into the tub.
She was the only person I’d ever felt completely safe with. The only person I never feared disappointing because the only thing she expected of me was to be there.
Why couldn’t I love her? She got along with my friends. She made me laugh, and her presence was always a comfort. Always.
She fit in my life.
Watching her, I balled my fists, almost convinced I should do it. I should go and lift her into my arms and take her to bed and sink inside of her and…”

I AM SORRY BUT WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT???

exhibit b:
“Years of nights,” I said, and I wasn’t sure if I was saying it more for her or me anymore, but I kept going. “Years of not thinking of you. Nearly an entire life of memories and history that doesn’t include you. You were nothing.”
She stared at me, no longer responding.
“She took care of me.” My voice dropped to nearly a whisper, and I didn’t care that she didn’t know who I was talking about. “She listened to me. Made me smile.”
No movement.
“Stood next to me,” I gritted out. “Fit in with my friends. She’s smart, clever, resourceful, and she took the shitty hand life dealt her and still knows how to love people, unlike you.”
Her eyes blazed, a fire kindling behind them.
“She’s hot in the shower,” I taunted more, “on the beach, against the wall, on the hood of the car in the rain, and in my backseat—”
my mind simply couldn't handle this, i had to stop reading for a bit. i was raging.

exhibit c:

Them together? How good they look together? Him driving into her like he’s done a thousand times and looking down into her eyes as he does it?”
I tensed.
“All the times he was alone with her, inside of her, coming and forgetting about you,” he told Emmy. “You can see it, right?”
disgusting. there are so many more shit like this, for what reason pls????

ALSO,
I didn’t think nightfall needed the sex fest/orgy scene that took place, it brought nothing to the book? Is it suppose to represent a sense of freedom? To provide smut? What is it with authors that need to have threesomes/orgies etc in books that are considered “dark”? What does this accomplish? In some books, YES it works so well and is needed for the plot and characterisation. But for nighfall?? it added NOTHING to this storyline, it was completely unnecessary. I personally do not like threesomes/orgies in my books because FOR ME, it cheapens the romance/relationship between the characters. You have the H who is possessive over the h so why would he let others have sex with her or be involved?? it just baffles me. There was one part where alex was moaning will's name!! that shit is uncomfortable for emmy when she already feels so insecure and envious over alex so why include it in the book? what do we gain from this???? I know majority of the readers couldn’t wait for these scenes and I don’t understand why??? So emmy was literally jealous and angry about alex and then five seconds later they’re getting off with each other in front of everyone??? Who wants to have sex with the person they are jealous of???? HOW DOES THIS MAKE SENSE??? Then emmy is later formally introduced to the girls??? lmaooo I really don’t understand. As damon said, it truly was “some weirdo, bacchanalian sex fest”. Forever grateful misha and ryen were never involved in any of the orgies in this series, i'd fucking riot if that ever transpired.

This book was too fucking long. I skimmed ALOT because most scenes felt like fillers and it did nothing to contribute to the overall story. So many scenes made me laugh because it was so fucking ridiculous and dramatic just like the rest of the books. I definitely didn't connect to this series at all, so i was surprised to give this 3 stars but was VERY close to rating it one star for several fucking reasons. Anyway, i enjoyed reading will and emmy content and that is the only reason i'm giving it a very weak 3 stars, basically 2.5. Will i ever reread this book? HELL FUCKING NO. I was angry throughout the majority of this book and would never put myself through this again. However, the love Will has for emmy was lovely to read, i honestly adored him but he did also really fucking piss off in some parts! Of course, will and emmy's relationship wasn't all sunshines and rainbows but it was enjoyable and i had nothing else to read so i thought, why the fuck not give it ago lmao. and the epilogue was so sweet too.

“It’s a boy?” he blurted out. “Are you sure?”
We leaned in, and I folded my lips between my teeth to contain the laughter.
A baby cried, there was some shuffling, and then we heard Damon’s playful little growl. “Ugh, what am I going to do with you?”
“Damon!” Winter growled. “I’m going to kill you. You better love him. You do, right?”
There was a pause, and I met Alex’s wide eyes with my own.
Drama…
Damon and I ran the construction business together now, him building and me designing, so I’d gotten used to his…brand of humor.
Finally, he answered. “Y–yeah,” he stuttered, not sounding convincing. “Yeah, of course, baby. But like, are you sure there aren’t any more in there or something?”

╰┈➤ ❝ Loving a guarded girl, I had realized, was a pyrrhic victory.''

°•*⁀➷ The best devils night couple: Will and Emory
°•*⁀➷ Emory is the more dominant one 🤭
°•*⁀➷ He calls her ''Little Trouble'' & ''Little Emmy''
-
╰┈➤ ❝ ''My little Em likes her little secrets. Little nerd by day who likes it a little hard at night.''
----------🕯️🖤----------
🕯️The beginning was a bit confusing but I genuinely loved this book the most out of all the Devil's Night books in the series, the characters are well written and the plot was good. (And some scenes, oh my). I genuinely loved the dynamic so much as well. Will genuinely loves Emory a lot.
(+ they are the cutest couple)
----------🕯️🖤----------
🕷It's a dark romance so of course there are TW's (some of them are just indirectly mentioned):
🕷Physical and verbal abuse, gore, violence, graphic content, murder, strangulation, abuse of power, arson, group intimacy, mentions of substance abuse
----------🕯️🖤----------
🕷There are a few spicy chapters :
11 - 15 - 18 - 19 - 26 - 31- 34 - 36
----------🕯️🖤----------
ఌ︎ “I loved you last night,” I told him. “And I loved you this morning. I’ll still be here. I’ll still be me tomorrow and every day after''
ఌ︎ ''It's not enough'' He said in a low voice. ''Not even nearly enough. All I think about now is how I want last night all over again, but this time in my car, in my bed, in your bed, in the shower..''
ఌ︎ ''Don't you know that you can have anything you want? I'll hurt anyone for you.''
ఌ︎'' And I was studying to be a surgeon who would've gladly cut off his own hands to have her.''
ఌ︎ ''We should've just kept it this simple huh? But you didn't want people to know the shit we did.''
ఌ︎ ''Why did you do it?'' he asked.
''Ashamed of what you liked me to do? There was still so much more to come, but you cut us short. We didnt even do half of everything I had planned for you.''
ఌ︎ ''You were a huge hassle that I indulged in for far too long.''
ఌ︎ ''She's hot in the shower,'' I taunted more, ''on the beach, against the wall, on the hood of the car in the rain, and in my backseat-''
ఌ︎ ''I want to ruin you for all the times you made me think you didn't want me. I want to give you a piece of me that you'll never be able to escape.''
ఌ︎ ''But you're going to be fucking mine someday. Come hell or high water, Emory Scott. You're my woman, and you're going to come home to me every day and sit at my table and warm my fucking bed. And you're going to give me a Will Grayson IV. Mark my words.''
ఌ︎ ''That was my girl, tattered soul, and all. She was beautiful.''
----------🕯️🖤----------
╰┈➤ ''And I'm going to tell everyone what you really like to do when your nose isn't burried in a book. I'm going to tel you that you like me and how you let me have some fun when no one was looking.'' (Kicking my feet at that 🤭)

3 'cause I'm generous and I love Damon and I love Pen and I don't want to be a mean witch stars

Mood : With high expectations comes great disappointment.

Minor Spoilers

Things to know before you read this book:
Nightfall is the kickest (MM, MFMF, FF, MMF, MFMM, MFMFMFFF, 🤣) and most OTT book in this Series.
It has Credence vibes.. If you didn't enjoy Credence you won't enjoy this book.

TW: abuse, domestic violence.

✅ 60-65 (especially past chapters) % + Damon and Winter's scenes --> 4 stars

Past: I loved the unrequited love and the angst. My heart broke for Emmy and I fell in love with Will because he was the hero EVERY heroine deserves.
I loved Damon.
Present : I loved the hate-love dynamic.
I loved Micah and Rory.

❌ Last 30% --> 2 stars (and yes, Damon-Winter-their spawns are the reasons for the second star)

Alex needed her own books.
The sex scenes didn't shock me but in my opinion THEY DIDN'T MAKE SENSE
(but I can't wait to read Pen's FF or MM books lol)
The plot DIDN'T MAKE SENSE.
Stupid Dramas (and lovely Rika) became the arc focus.

And NO, If Pen will write a spin-off I won't read Athos's book because she will be a mini Rika and I can't stand her anymore.
I shouldn't have read the epilogue.

(I'm really afraid for the Hellbent Series.. I feel twin threesome sandwich coming lol)

Tommorow I'll try to write a decent review.
Maybe.

👋🏻

PS Damon, I love you 🖤

What has happened to Penelope Douglas from the first books she wrote (which she later destroyed) to her books now? In this book everyone seemed to be sleeping with each other. Doesn’t matter what sex they were they were all just horny for each other. To top it off they are all friends and have no problems knowing at one point or the other one of them slept with the other friend. If your into your main characters being ok with sharing you will love this book. This book was a mess and definitely the last one for me by this author. Yuck!
