Our Stories

Why are stories important?

Stories can create opportunities for us to come together. They allow us to share experiences, discover common ground, be curious and interested in learning more about each other. We are in the midst of a very unusual time where we won't get to interact with each other in the typical ways . Perhaps coming together around stories can help us all. During our school closure this will be a hub for our collective stories.

Ideas for students

  • Interview a family member and write about what they say. A good starting interview question could be, how would you describe a perfect day when you were young?

  • Keep a journal of what it's like when school is closed. Share some advice for others about what to do when school is closed.

  • Write your own story. Go to the Sharing your Story page for some tips.

Share a story

We'll start sharing stories here without any personal information. You can share a story by emailing me.

I'll read what you send me, and start including the stories on this site.

We'll start with the following prompts:

Interviewing an adult family member: how would describe a perfect day when you were young?

Journal: share some advice for others about what to do when school is closed.

Ideas for parents

Share some advice for others about how you're working through the closures. What's working for you? What's not working for you?

Listen to a story

Sometimes just listening to a story can be fun.

There's a story below and resources like StorylineOnline are great places for listening to stories.

The Grumpy Monkey, by Suzanne Lang

My son, Micah, and I read one of our favorite stories. You can read the story with us!

Some questions to think about:

  • Everyone gets grumpy sometimes. What helps you when you're grumpy?

  • Do you notice when other people are grumpy? How do you try to help them?

The Invisible Boy, by Trudy Ludwig

Another one of our favorites! Read a story with Micah and me.

Some questions to think about:

  • What do you notice about Brian?

  • What happens when Justin notices Brian

  • Why?

  • It just takes one person to notice!

Once I Was... by Niki Clark Leopold

Another favorite! :-)

Some questions to think about:

  • What kind of things can you do now that you didn't use to be able to do?

  • What kind of things do you wish you could do in the future?
