McGregor is best midfielder since McStay to come through Celtic youth system, says Steven Thompson
STEVEN THOMPSON reckons Callum McGregor is the best midfielder since Paul McStay to come through the Celtic youth system.
McGregor, who has featured 42 times for Neil Lennon's side this season, has become a key player for club and country.
Ex-Rangers and St Mirren star Thompson reckons the midfielder, who is tied down at Parkhead until summer 2024, is vital to the Scottish champions.
The Scotland international was on target as the Hoops sailed to a 4-0 win over Motherwell at Fir Park on Wednesday night.
And Thompson reckons the Celtic midfielder will one day captain the club.
Speaking on Sportscene earlier tonight, he said: "I don't think he's underrated. Callum McGregor had an incredible match.
"Edouard will obviously get a lot of the headlines but Callum McGregor has become the linchpin of this side.
"I think the new system is certainly suiting him, giving him a bit more freedom to get forward.

"He's just so incredibly consistent and so incredibly talented, and he showcased all of his attributes last night.
"He's recently signed a five-year deal, he is a future Celtic captain, he's possibly the best midfielder that's came through the youth system since Paul McStay.
"There aren't enough positives you can say about him."

Thompson added: "Because his performance levels are so high all the time across the board, if he has a good game you just go, 'oh well, he's had another good game'.
"I think that's possibly, strangely, the biggest compliment you can give him.
"It's not very often he dips below the incredible standards that he's set."
