Five Elements of a Successful Company Video

Making a video about your company can be a lot of fun — and a lot of work. It’s not easy to translate a great idea from your mind to the screen.

At Pixel Mill Studios, we’ve been creating videos for businesses and nonprofits for more than 25 years. Whether you choose to make your video in-house, or hire a company like ours to make it for you, here are five important elements to making your video a hit:

  1. People

Instead of hiring actors, have your own staff be the talent. People love to talk about the things they’re good at, so let them shine. They know the material. Let them talk about what they know and so viewers get a sense not only of what your company can do, but who it is.

  1. Story and script

You and your team know your company’s story better than anybody. Come up with a clear action you want viewers to take after watching your video, then craft a script to impart that message. Come up with thoughtful interview questions to ask your staff so you’ll be able to pick out the best sound bites and tell your company’s story in an authentic way.

  1. Equipment

These days when everyone can make videos on their phone, it’s more vital than ever that your corporate video looks and sounds  professional. Using professional 4K cameras, lighting, and sound makes a huge difference. People will notice right away that your company video doesn’t look like a YouTube video shot by a teenager.

  1. B-roll

You don’t want your video to be just a collection of talking heads. B-roll, or background footage, is an integral part of making your video more interesting. Footage of your facilities or employees at work will show viewers what they are getting when they purchase your product or invest in your company.

  1. “Why”

In our experience, the most successful videos have a specific focus on the “why.” Why are you making this video? Whether the purpose of the video is for promoting a product or service, recruiting new employees, attracting investors, or something else, focusing the video on a specific goal and action you want viewers to take will make it much more effective.

Seven Script Writing Tips for Your Company Video

Whether your business is announcing a new product, pitching to investors, or training your employees, your company video should start with a script that keeps it simple and conveys key ideas without overwhelming your audience.

At Pixel Mill Studios, we’ve been creating videos for businesses and nonprofits for more than 25 years. Here are seven things we’ve learned along the way about how to create a good script:

Come up with a clear goal

What’s the desired result of this video? What do you want the viewer to do after watching it — buy a product; invest in your company; contribute to your nonprofit? Knowing your main goal will help you stay focused and not dilute your message with extraneous information.

  1. Write to your audience

Are you speaking to experts in your industry or a general consumer? Put yourself in the shoes of the people who will watch your video. Imagine reading your script aloud to this audience. Adjust your tone and word choice accordingly.

  1. Focus on the most important information

For experts in a subject matter, it can be tempting to overload your video with information. Include only the necessary information, and save some details for later. If you get too far into the weeds, your audience can, and usually will, tune out. Stick with the main point and lead them all the way through.

  1. Use short, declarative sentences

Long, complex sentences are confusing to read. They’re even more confusing to listen to on video. Give your viewer one idea at a time. Convey each idea as simply and clearly as possible.

  1. Show your organization’s personality

Prospective clients, investors, or customers aren’t just buying a product — they’re buying you. Show your organization at work. If applicable, include interviews with employees and executives. Let people get to know you.

  1. End with your call-to-action

What do you want your audience to do the moment they finish watching your video? “Call today”? “Buy now”? “Visit our website”? If you’ve written a clear and engaging script, your viewers will have some momentum by the end of your video. Tell them what you want them to do now.

  1. Read your script out loud

Does the language sound natural and easy to follow? If possible, ask someone to listen along and point out sections that sound confusing or unnatural. Adjust the language until you reach a version that’s easy and comfortable to read aloud.
