Job Title:  Depredation/Nuisance Tech

Location:  Utah County

Job Description:
Are you a natural resource professional who likes to be part of a team whose core values are integrity, professionalism, accountability, teamwork, and cooperation?  If you are goal oriented, have a passion for wildlife, and know how to help others succeed, then a Wildlife Technician with the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) is the job for you!  As a Wildlife Technician, you will implement the depredation and nuisance program as part of a team of motivated professionals that comply with the mission, goals, and objectives of the DWR. You will also create and strengthen local partnerships with members of the public, and private land owners.

Principal Duties:

  • Works closely with landowners, conservation organizations, DWR personnel, federal, state, and local governments to plan and accomplish the goals and objectives in state laws, rules, policies and work plans. 
  • Respond to and address depredation situations involving terrestrial wildlife species. 
  • Fill out GM-19's  and obtain signatures from landowners of lessee's.   
  • Respond to nuisance wildlife calls •Immobilize and transport nuisance wildlife as needed.
Ideal Candidate:
  • A Bachelors degree or higher in a wildlife science or other directly related field is preferred. 
  • Excellent communication, public relations, and conflict resolution skills to develop and maintain working relationships with private landowners in . difficult and emotional situations. 
  • Knowledge of wildlife damage prevention techniques and trapping methods. • Knowledge of farming, ranching, and agricultural practices. Difficult and emotional situations. 
  • The ability to effectively trap, euthanize with a firearm, and remove offending animals, ability to field dress wildlife. 
  • Excellent teamwork attitude; willing to give assistance to co-workers when needed.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be able to safely handle and capture wildlife.
  • Be proficient in using Microsoft Office and Google Suite.
  • Weigh the relative costs and benefits of a potential action.
  • Make decisions or solve problems by using logic to identify key facts, explore alternatives, and propose meaningful solutions.
  • Understand applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Have great oral and written communication skills.
  • Understand principles, theories, and practices of wildlife science. 
  • Understand the ecology of wildlife, domestic animals, and habitats.
  • Compose and produce reports and written documents.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Education - BS degree in wildlife, natural resources or closely related field preferred.
  • Experience with chemical immobilization.
  • First Aid and CPR Training.

Supplemental Information

  • Employees will sometimes be working in extreme weather conditions, at night, some weekends and holidays. The work requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as frequent climbing, crouching or crawling in restricted areas, defending oneself and/or others against physical attack. Physically demanding position that includes heavy lifting up to 75lbs. Requires an extensive amount of walking and hiking with an ability to operate snowmobiles, ATV's, and fork lifts.
  • Risks which require the use of special safety precautions and/or equipment, e.g., working around operating machines, working with contagious diseases or hazardous chemicals, etc.
  • Chemical Immobilization training, First Aid and CPR Training, and Firearms training after hire.
  • Occasional twenty-four hour on call, emergency call outs, nights, weekends, holidays and travel are required for this position.

The beginning wage for this position will be between $14.67 and $19.31 per hour for new employees. For existing state employees DHRM rules and agency/division policy will determine the starting salary. Employees must meet the following requirements and conditions: 1) Positive attitude and good communication skills. 2) This position requires euthanizing injured or aggressive wildlife. This task will be performed by using a firearm or other methods of euthanasia on the animal. 3) Incumbent must handle both venomous and non-venomous reptiles as well as other potentially hazardous wildlife. 4) Must be willing to receive Rabies pre-exposure vaccinations. 5) Handle various wildlife. These animals may be in various forms or condition (alive, injured, dead). 6) Obtain training in firearms, immobilization drugs for wildlife, first aid, and CPR certification within 3 months of employment. 7) Valid license to operate a motor vehicle in the state of Utah. 8) Pass a criminal background check. 9) Must be able to lift and/or drag up to 100 lbs as needed. 10) Work in extreme and adverse weather conditions (heat, wind, snow, ice, rain, etc.) 11) Work evenings, weekends & holidays as needed; Work varied hours; Work overtime as needed. 12) This position requires the\ incumbent to be available for on-call (immediate response) and travel as needed.
