Breadvan no More: Chopped 1970 Lotus Europa S2 Turbo
This 1970 Lotus Europa S2 (chassis 7005130314R) was customized by the seller as an open top speedster with a claimed 1,000 hours of labor put into the build. Most attention has been paid to cosmetics and the body features numerous other mods in addition to the chopped roof, while the car’s running gear remains stock aside from fitment of a Rajay turbo kit. Some of the visual changes aren’t entirely successful, but we dig the concept, and there’s nothing here that couldn’t be changed without too much trouble. Find it here on eBay in Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada with reserve not met.
Surprisingly, the Europa doesn’t look all that bad without a roof. Notably, the stock “breadvan” decklid has been trimmed down with headrest fairings molded in. Twin Brooklands windscreens have been fitted up front, though a single pane low-cut windshield would look more era appropriate here. Front fender top louvers are a bit over-the-top, and chrome hinge trims are as well, but orange could work well here with a few small changes–respraying the roll hoops black or silver would be a start.
The interior is a rainbow of color and carbon fiber, but again, it wouldn’t be too difficult to dial things in to taste. Snug seats, harnesses and roll hoops should all provide a bit of peace of mind, but a more uniform color scheme wouldn’t hurt. Photos are all oddly composed and vertically oriented, and unfortunately no direct shots of the dash and its gauges are provided. Check out the quick-release hub and neat little blue suede rimmed wheel, a nice match for the handsomely upholstered seats.
As noted above, a Rajay turbo has been fitted, and in addition all electrics are new, but the 1.6 liter Renault 807 four and 4-speed are otherwise stock, the former benefiting from a rebuild. It’s quite clean and tidy under the big fiberglass lid, and the seller says that just 1,000 miles have been added since completion,with total mileage quoted as around 57k. The ad also includes a couple short videos of the car on the road, and it definitely sounds good.
Regardless of how you feel about its looks, there’s little question that the car should be a blast to drive quickly on a nice, empty, flowing road. We think it has a lot of potential.
