Winder Driver
Salary £ £32,000-£36,000
South Crofty Mine, Pool, TR15 3QT
Vacancy listed 02/05/2023
Application deadline 04/08/2023
Details
The iconic headframe at South Crofty is due to be operating again in the summer of 2023!

We are looking for three enthusiastic individuals for the role of Winder Driver.  You will need to be passionate about Cornish mining and have a meticulous and safety conscious approach.

The role will be available to start in July 2023, with applicant assessments starting in June.

Role Purpose
The main dewatering pumps at South Crofty are due to be operational summer 2023. The focus will then be on accessing the deep underground workings, using the historic New Cooks Kitchen Shaft at the mine. At this point, sheeve wheels on the headframe will be turning again to hoist the conveyances required to access the workings with personnel and materials.

Two new single drum winding engines have been purchased to wind from this shaft, both due to arrive in the autumn of 2023. We are looking for 2 full time winder operators for this winder, one per shift, along with 1 additional winder operator, to provide the level of cover needed for this safety critical role.

All training will be provided, both on and off-site, following recognised National Occupational Standards and Best Practice. Whilst the South Crofty winders are commissioned, winder training will likely take place at a third-party operation elsewhere within the UK.

No prior experience is necessary, although experience in operating safety critical equipment in a solitary setting would be favourable (e.g. HGV, train driver, crane driver, etc)

The working hours are on a shift system basis. Each working cycle consists of four shifts of 11 hours on four consecutive days, followed by four consecutive days off.  Starting at 7am and finishing at 6pm, these times may vary slightly.

Key relationships
The role will directly report to the Mine Shift Boss, with overall reporting responsibility to the Mine Manager.

Communication between the Winder Driver, Banksman and underground employees will be essential in ensuring personnel and materials are safely and efficiently conveyed in the shaft.

 Skills and experience
The key skills, qualifications and experience which are desirable for this role are:

  • high degree of accuracy and attention to detail
  • experience of working within a regulated safety system, with a pro-active approach to workplace health and safety
  • ability to strictly follow safe working systems and practices within the constraints of the relevant legislation
  • ability to multitask
  • excellent communication skills
  • proficiency with HMI/Scada Interface Systems.
  • calm and collected under pressure

 Main Role Requirements
As a Winder Driver, the successful candidate will:

  • co-operate with all operational team members to ensure work efforts are coordinated and conducted safely and efficiently
  • operate, control, monitor and maintain the shaft conveyance systems and associated winding engines
  • operate and control shaft signalling, and communication systems related to shaft conveyances in conjunction with the banksman, or other appointed signallers
  • conduct daily maintenance and housekeeping activities on the winding engines and associated equipment and report defects and concerns that cannot be dealt with competently as part of your role
  • operate and control site SCADA systems associated with winding and ancillary equipment, including the dewatering pumps
  • ensure compliance at all times with the relevant National Occupational Standards for Shafts and Winding, the Mines Regulations 2014, Company Policy, RAMS/SOPS and the Manager’s Rules
  • to work within the OEM recommendations on all winding, hoisting and shaft equipment
  • provide official daily reports to your line manager, detailing work carried out and maintenance/repair requirements.

Cornish Metals is an equal opportunities employer and reasonable adjustments will be considered.
