This event is aimed at anyone who is interested in learning more or applying for a key role in our ward teams, which help the Royal Devon to provide the best care possible to our patients when they need it the most. The healthcare assistants (HCA) is a critical and valuable role working with the ward teams at RD&E Wonford. As both an acute and community hospital Trust, we also have opportunities available within our local community hospitals and district nursing teams.

About you

Experience in care required? No! Nor is a long CV, however what we are looking for are people who are kind, caring and compassionate; that’s non-negotiable!

Returning to work after a career break? We would love to meet people from all sorts of backgrounds; we value both work and/or life experience.

Thinking of a career change? Our colleagues come from all sorts of different industries. You don’t have to have formal care experience to be a HCA. Just as long as you are caring and compassionate, we’ll teach you the rest.

There is no right or wrong way to start to your career in care. There are many opportunities to progress as a healthcare assistant - you bring your best, we’ll do the rest.

Skills and personal characteristics needed

Are you?

• Caring, kind and compassionate

• Cheerful and friendly, able to put a smile on someone’s face

• Willing to be hands-on with patients, including personal care tasks

• Able to follow instructions and procedures

• Able to work in a team but also use your own initiative

Do you have?

• Excellent communication skills, to speak with patients, their carers and your colleagues

• Good listening skills to follow instructions and to understand and relay what patients and carers are saying

• Good organisation skills to manage tasks and priorities

• Good observational skills to look after patients

Healthcare Assistants

As a HCA, you will be a vital part of the team and support patients, acting as the patient voice or advocate, when they need that support the most and you will ensure our patient experience is as comfortable as possible.

Depending on which ward you work on, duties can slightly change, below are some of the tasks you may carry out:

• washing and dressing patients

• serving meals and drinks, helping to feed patients

• making beds

• helping patients to keep active

• helping patients to feel more comfortable

• monitoring patient’s conditions by taking temperatures, pulse, respiration and weight

Working hours and pay

We are recruiting for both full time (37.5 hours per week) and part time roles. We also run a Staff Bank if you are interested in working more irregular hours.

Our wards have a variety of working patterns, including shifts for early, late, nights and weekends. This will be discussed in more detail on the day and we will always try and accommodate people’s availability as best we can.

Our HCAs start on the Band 2 salary - £18,546 - £19,918 per annum, plus unsocial hours premia.
