Human remains were discovered Sunday afternoon on the Northern Kentucky University campus, a university spokesperson confirmed.

In an update issued Monday afternoon, university officials said per an investigation by law enforcement, the remains have potentially been at this site for several years.

According to a statement from the university, NKU police were dispatched Sunday at 12:28 p.m. after a bystander, who was on campus for soccer activities, found what appeared to be human remains in a wooded area behind the soccer stadium.

Officials from Northern Kentucky University say a police investigation indicates the remains may have been at the site for several years.

The Campbell County Coroner's Office currently has the remains. They will be transferred to the Kentucky Medical Examiner's Office for an identification process, which investigators said could take several months.

No foul play is suspected, university officials said, and "the situation poses no danger to campus."

University and Highland Heights police were on the scene with the Campbell County coroner to investigate.

The remains were found the same day as the men's basketball team was selected to the NCAA tournament as a 16 seed. The investigation was taking place during a Selection Sunday watch party on campus.

“With the NCAA Watch Party taking place this evening at Truist Arena, parking will be moved from Lot O to the Welcome Center Garage due to the investigation," states a letter to students from campus officials provided to Enquirer media partner Fox19.
