"He'll never be forgotten by us, Dutch Football fans".

We told you this week how Scottish Sun readers have helped fund one of the UK’s most comprehensive clinical trials into motor neurone disease in a generation.

Hundreds of people living with the condition are being invited to take part in MND-SMART which aims to find treatments that can slow, stop or reverse disease progression.

More than £20,000 of the £1.5 million invested by MND Scotland in the study was raised by our readers after they flocked in huge numbers to our annual Christmas charity shop late last year.

The illness has touched the hearts of many, with a number of high profile stars of Scottish sport having been diagnosed.

Ricksen died last year aged 43, having lived with MND since 2013.

Scottish rugby icon Doddie Weir revealed in 2017 that he was battling the condition and Celtic idol Jimmy Johnstone died of the illness in 2006 aged 61.

Veronika Riksen, wife of Rangers legend Fernando, posts heartbreaking tribute to Dutch icon and says 'Love you forever'
