Galapagos/Ecuador: The Government of New Zealand and PAHO/WHO support the health sector's response to COVID-19

24 July 2020

The Embassy of New Zealand in Colombia has made a financial contribution to support the activities that PAHO/WHO is carrying out in the Galapagos Province in Ecuador in response to the COVID-19 emergency.

The project focuses on preventing and controlling COVID-19 transmission through the enhancement of the response capacity of the health sector to manage cases, the prevention and control of infections, multi-sectoral coordination and the intensification of epidemiological surveillance actions in the province. The main beneficiaries of the project are the public services network's personnel and the estimated 25 000 people, particularly those with difficult access to health services, that are living in the territory.

With the support of two consultants from the Organization, in coordination with the local health authorities and the Galapagos Government, the number of cases has been significantly reduced.
