ERIE, Pa – The Mercyhurst wrestling squad will begin postseason action this Saturday at the NCAA Super Region One Championships hosted by Pitt-Johnstown. The Lakers, along with other Super Region One members, will take to the mats at the Sport Center on UPJ's campus.
Wrestling will begin at 10:00 a.m. and gates will open to spectators at 9:00 a.m. Tickets can be purchased at the gate the day of the event. Admission for the day will be $15 for adults and $10 for students, children, and seniors and if a spectator is coming for only one session, then the cost will be $8 for adults and $4 for students.
Super Region I is made up of 11 teams: American International, Alderson Broaddus, East Stroudsburg, Fairmont State, Gannon, Kutztown, Mercyhurst, Millersville, Seton Hill, Pitt-Johnstown and Shippensburg.
The field will feature four Top 25 teams in Mercyhurst (T-15), Gannon (T-15), Kutztown (18), and Pitt-Johnstown (19). Individually, 15 wrestlers come into the tournament with national rankings including
Eric Bartos,
Dillon Walker,
Luke McGonigal, and
Jacob Robb for the Lakers.
The top three finishers at each weight class will punch their ticket to St. Louis, M.O. for the NCAA Wrestling Championships on March 11-12.
Laker Overview
The Lakers will enter postseason play after finishing their regular season with a dual meet record of 11-6 while finishing tied for third in the PSAC with a 5-2 in conference record. Their last time out the Lakers fell 29-12 to Pitt-Johnstown at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center. In a matchup of two nationally ranked grapplers at 174, it was Mercyhurst's
Dillon Walker who came away with a commanding 17-10 decision over No. 4 Brock Biddle. Walker returned to the mat after a lengthy injury timeout in the third period to close out Biddle for one of his best wins of the season.
