The murals in Ortega Park have been a part of the Eastside community for 42 years. Recently, the City of Santa Barbara has decided to redesign and remodel Ortega Park to include the demolition of the existing murals.  Many of the murals qualify as historically significant, and all of them are significant to the community as they reflect our history and culture. 

Our goal is to bring awareness and engage community members to participate in the efforts to save the murals.

 YOU can take action and sign this petition to protest the destruction of the murals in Ortega Park by honoring their sacred location on the Eastside of Santa Barbara.

                                                    Demands: 

1, That the City of Santa Barbara, issues a public apology during a City Council meeting for not centering the murals as part of the original design process.

2. That the City of Santa Barbara acknowledges and moving forward, that the current murals will be centered and memorialized by honoring their significance to the community.

3. That the City of Santa Barbara renames Ortega Park to reflect the history of the murals and the ongoing commitment to make the park a cultural arts hub on the Eastside.

4. That the City of Santa Barbara will work with the community equally to determine the relocation and re-creation of each mural within the redevelopment of Ortega Park.

5. That the City of Santa Barbara is committed to ensuring that all new mural and public art opportunities in Ortega Park will use indigenous and women of color iconography as part of the remodel and design of Ortega Park.

6. That the City of Santa Barbara commits to return 10% of the park back to the community in order to relocate and preserve murals that would otherwise be discarded, which allows the neighborhood to reclaim community space for healing.

7. That the City of Santa Barbara creates and approves an Ortega Park Steering Committee, that will direct and coordinate cultural celebrations, community events and assist with commissioning public art in the park.

Los murales en Ortega Park han sido parte de la comunidad de Eastside durante 42 años. Recientemente, la Ciudad de Santa Bárbara ha decidido rediseñar y remodelar el Parque Ortega para incluir la demolición de los murales existentes. Muchos de los murales califican como de importancia histórica, y todos son importantes para la comunidad ya que reflejan nuestra historia y cultura.

Nuestro objetivo es crear conciencia e involucrar a los miembros de la comunidad para que participen en los esfuerzos para salvar los murales.

Tu  puedes actuar y firmar esta petición para protestar contra la destrucción de los murales en el Parque Ortega al honrar su ubicación sagrada en el lado este de Santa Bárbara.

Las Demandas:

1. Que la Ciudad de Santa Bárbara emita una disculpa pública durante una reunión del Concejo Municipal por no centrar los murales como parte del proceso de diseño original.

2. Que la Ciudad de Santa Bárbara reconozca y siga adelante, que los murales actuales se centrarán y conmemorarán honrando su importancia para la comunidad.

3.Que la Ciudad de Santa Bárbara cambie el nombre del Parque Ortega para reflejar la historia de los murales y el compromiso continuo de hacer del parque un centro de artes culturales en el lado este.

4.Que la Ciudad de Santa Bárbara trabaje con la comunidad para determinar la reubicación y recreación de cada mural dentro de la remodelación del Parque Ortega.

5.Que la Ciudad de Santa Bárbara se compromete a asegurar que todas las nuevas oportunidades de murales y arte público en el Parque Ortega utilizarán iconografía indígena y de mujeres de color como parte de la remodelación y diseño del Parque Ortega.

6.Que la Ciudad de Santa Bárbara se compromete a devolver el 10% del parque a la comunidad para reubicar y preservar los murales que de otra manera serían descartados, lo que permite que el vecindario recupere el espacio comunitario para sanar.

7.Que la Ciudad de Santa Bárbara crea y aprueba un Comité Directivo del Parque Ortega, que dirigirá y coordinará las celebraciones culturales, eventos comunitarios y ayudará con la puesta en marcha de arte público en el parque.
