X & CUD Lyrics

[Intro: XXXTENTACION]
The pain in my heart just won't end
The words that I find just don't seem to compare

Awaitin' my death in the end
Alone, I must seek out the end to begin

[Verse 1: Kid Cudi]
Mind is the maze thinkin' 'bout what I can't change
Devil's on my head and I don't want to worry my friends
They told me, "Say somethin'," don't think they'd understand
Momma truly gets when my daddy left, the wound, it ain't mend
Livin' out a life surrounded by lies, I try, I know
Sayin' goodbye, but you're stuck in my mind, the sun done went away, oh
Heaven, she knows I try, burn this blunt of mine, oh, with teary eyes
Search and you will find you, yeah, ay-oh

[Bridge: XXXTENTACION]
So nobody wants death 'cause nobody wants life to end
I'm the only one stressed and the only one tired of havin' fake friends
Faced my fears, can't keep love at all

[Verse 2: Kid Cudi]
Will he cower? Never, ever, Cleveland City
Born a grinder, watch him ripping, can't stop him
Came in filthy, double O'a, reppin' for 'em
Keep a flow up, bumpin' Camp L'oa, Cud Lucini
Boy in the gritty city, this nigga had his Wheaties, huh
Runnin' my mission, love, and God had looked out
Them niggas lungin', dawg, don't care about y'all
See, I'm off and I'm finna soar, I'm goin' high up
You can't tell me nothin', you could never
In my varsity sleeves, leather, know I do it better
And these things, it seems, pile up on me heavily
So I just need my blunt and my girl to cuddle and love
I'm done with that deal, got Nikes back on my heels
Call up my nigga, Sil, world tourin', pack up, we kill
And it's pictures on reels, we gettin' it poppin', no pills
You see they jockin' 'em still, nigga, I'm doin' it ill

Genius Annotation

“X & CUD” is the fifteen track on INSANO and is Kid Cudi’s first official collaboration with late rapper XXXTENTACION. The track samples XXXTENTACION’s “Orlando” and finds both Kid Cudi and XXXTENTACION discussing mental health and death.

The collaboration was teased on March 14, 2021, when Kid Cudi tweeted about XXXTENTACION’s remix of Kid Cudi’s song “Edge of the Earth” titled “The Edge”. John Cunningham, XXXTENTACION’s close friend and producer, then replied asking on how to get in contact to Kid Cudi. The two later got in contact confirming a Kid Cudi and XXXTENTACION collaboration was in the works based around Kid Cudi recording new vocals on XXXTENTACION’s “The Edge”.

On September 15, 2021, John Cunningham replied to a tweet by an XXXTENTACION fanpage talking about the Kid Cudi and XXXTENTACION collaboration, saying “moment(s)” hinting at more than one collaboration between the two releasing.

In August 2023, a tracklist which was made by a fan based on the image of the pre-order vinyl showed that the fifteen track on INSANO was titled “X & CUD” starting speculation that this is the XXXTENTACION collaboration which was teased two years prior.

On January 8, 2024, Kid Cudi posted the official tracklist to INSANO confirming “X & CUD” as the fifteenth track with XXXTENTACION being listed as a feature. John Cunninghan later shared on the same day that the song had no new vocals from XXXTENTACION and was just a sample of one of his previously released songs, making it completely seperate collaboration to the previously teased “The Edge”.

What did Kid Cudi & XXXTENTACION say about "X & CUD"?

It was really one of these things where I’d heard a version of a song that X had did of one of my songs on Speedin' Bullet 2 Heaven, and I tweeted out “Is this real?” and I ended up connecting with John Cunningham who worked very closely with X. He met up with me, he came to the studio, we talked for a little bit, he played me the joint, it’s fucking amazing. At some point, we had to get it out, I want them to have it, I don’t even want it, I just wanna make sure that they have what they need. I’ll clear it, whatever they gotta do. I didn’t wanna ask them for a verse, I think that’s weird, so I was like, maybe there’s something that he’s done that I could probably flip. And I couldn’t really find nothing except for “Orlando” because it had no drums, and it was hitting me out of all the songs that I heard. If this was not calling me, like the Cudi vibes, this was just speaking to me. And I hit up John, I got the pieces to the session, got the vocals, and we were like “Let’s produce it up and make it brand new”. This was like a gift, it was ready to be manipulated, it had no drums, it was really bare, it was there. So I took that as a sign from the heavens and went to the studio and just kind of conjured up something and pieced together parts and I loved his cadence and melodies on the verse, so I thought it would be cool for fans to see me inspired by him and be in his space for a little bit. And then I wanted the second half to just be the uplifting part, this is where we’re at right now, the light, the love. […] X is just a reflection of my younger days to me. I see a young man that’s hurting, I was hurting. This song, I felt his pain and even though it’s a verse that’s been out before, it was like my remix and my way of showing love and giving people an idea of what a X and Cudi collaboration would sound like.
