Cyclone Yaas has completed the process of landfall, the IMD has confirmed.

Cyclone Yaas location and intensity update

As of 12:30 p.m., the Severe Cyclonic Storm Yaas lay centred over north coastal Odisha, about 15 km west of Balasore.

The wind intensity at its centre was recorded at 110-120 kmph, gusting to 130 kmph. It is expected to decrease and reach 90-100 kmph, gusting to 110 kmph during the next three hours, and fall down to 60-70 kmph, gusting to 80 kmph during the subsequent six hours.

Overall, the system is likely to continue moving north-northwestwards, and gradually weaken into a Cyclonic Storm during the next six hours.

Yaas weakens into Cyclonic Storm

Cyclone Yaas has weakened into a Severe Cyclonic Storm, with the current wind intensity at its centre being 110-120 kmph, gusting to 130 kmph. From here on, it will continue its movement north-northwestwards, and gradually weaken into a Cyclonic Storm during the next six hours.

As of 12:30 p.m., the system lay centred over North Coastal Odisha, about 15 km west-southwest of Balasore.

One person dies after a tree branch falls on him in Keonjhar

A 50-year-old man died after a branch of a tree fell on him due to the cyclone-triggered winds in Panchupali village under the Anandpur block of Keonjhar district, Odisha, reports TOI.

“The man, Purnachandra Nayak, was on his way to worship in a village temple when a branch fell on him resulting in his death. He has concrete roof house,” said Ashish Thakare, collector, Keonjhar.

Yaas to weaken into a Severe Cyclonic Storm in the next three hours

As per the IMD's latest update, the Very Severe Cyclonic Storm Yaas crossed the North Odisha coast, about 20 km south of Balasore, between 10:30 and 11:30 a.m. today with an estimated wind speed of 130-140 kmph, gusting to 155 kmph. It then moved northwestwards, and was centred over north coastal Odisha, about 15 km south-southwest of Balasore around 11:30 a.m.

The cyclone is expected to continue its movement northwestwards, and gradually weaken into a Severe Cyclonic Storm in the next three hours, and into a Cyclonic Storm in the subsequent six hours.

22 NDRF, SDRF teams deployed in Bihar

In preparation for Cyclone Yaas, the Bihar government has deployed 22 teams of NDRF and SDRF in districts adjoining Jharkhand and West Bengal, reports IANS.

The meteorological department predicts heavy rainfall and strong winds (80 to 100 kmph) in the state from Thursday morning, especially in southern and central districts like Katihar, Khagaria, Madhepura, Saharsa, Supaul, Nawada, Lakhisarai, Aurangabad, Patna, Bhojpur, Buxar, Vaishali. Residents of Bihar have accordingly been alerted to stay away from open spaces and trees to avoid getting struck by lightning.

Landfall update

As per updates from the IMD officials, Cyclone Yaas' landfall began at 9 a.m. IST on Wednesday morning. As of 10:30 a.m., the system was seen crossing the coast to the south of Balasore, and the eye of the storm is expected to touch the mainland by noon.

Strong winds bombard Odisha, West Bengal

As of 9:30 a.m. IST on Wednesday, strong winds blowing at 80-90 kmph, gusting to 100 kmph were recorded along and off the North Odisha coast, while 70-80 kmph, gusting to 90 kmph prevailed along and off the West Bengal coast. Odisha's Balasore recorded winds worth 87 kmph.

Meanwhile, Cyclone Yaas' landfall process is currently ongoing, and will continue for the next 2-3 hours.

Yaas to begin de-intensifying by Wednesday noon

Having started the landfall process as a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm, Cyclone Yaas will maintain its Very Severe Cyclonic Storm status for the next two hours. Thereafter, by 12 p.m. IST Wednesday, it is likely to de-intensify into a Severe Cyclonic Storm with a wind speed of 95-105 kmph, gusting to 115 kmph.

Cyclone Yaas to produce extremely heavy rains over East India

Under the influence of Cyclone Yaas, extremely heavy rains are likely over Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal and Jharkhand on Wednesday, while heavy to very heavy falls are on the horizon over Assam and Meghalaya. Further, the likes of Bihar, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, and Andaman & Nicobar Islands will also record heavy precipitation.

Cyclone Yaas lies 45 km away from the coast and is moving towards it at 15 kmph. The landfall process is likely to commence in the next two hours, confirms IMD. The storm possesses wind speeds of around 130-140 kmph gusting to 155 kmph and is likely to maintain similar intensity during landfall between Dhamra and Balasore.

Kolkata airport shuts down

Kolkata airport authorities have decided to shut down the airport operations from 8.30 am to 7.45 pm on Wednesday due to the incoming cyclone. The airport operations will resume when the storm abates and conditions improve for safe flight operations in the evening.

“We have been delaying the decision on closure till Tuesday evening for an update on the weather condition. Though the system has moved further away from Bengal and projected wind speed has reduced, it will still generate strong cross-winds to make operations hazardous. Thus, we have decided to shut the airport for 11 hours and 15 minutes,” said Kolkata airport director Pulla Hesekiah.

After landfall Yaas will advance northwestward through Jharkhand, Bihar into eastern portions of Uttar Pradesh while weakening gradually. However, despite losing intensity in terms of wind speeds, the system will possess enough moisture carried from the tropics to soak these regions for several days. Heavy to very heavy rains, locally extremely heavy, are forecast across east and central India from Wednesday to Friday. While northeastern Odisha will witness a maximum of 250-300mm rainfall on Wednesday, risks of flooding, inundation of low-lying area and landslide prevails across all these regions.

More than 21 lakh evacuated

As per the latest updates, a total of more than 21 lakh people have been evacuated from the coastal regions of both Odisha and West Bengal to minimise the impacts of Cyclone Yaas. More than 10 lakh have been relocated in Odisha, while West Bengal moved more than 11 lakh people to safer locations.

170 mm rainfall in Chandabali and Paradip

Heavy rains have already started to pour across coastal regions of Odisha and West Bengal due to the approaching storm. A maximum of 170+ mm was registered in Chandabali and Paradip in Odisha, while 47 mm rainfall was also registered in Digha in West Bengal during the last 20 hours. Both Paradip and Digha have recorded gusty winds blowing at more than 40 kmph during the early hours of Wednesday.

As per the latest updates from the IMD, Very Severe Cyclone Yaas is 60 km away from Dhamra and 90 km away from Paradip in Odisha as of 4.30 am on Wednesday. The storm possesses wind speeds of around 130-140 kmph gusting to 155 kmph and is likely to maintain similar intensity during landfall between Dhamra and Balasore. Yaas is barrelling towards the Odisha coast at around 15 kmph and at this pace, the landfall process may commence as early as 9 am.

Wetnesday: Yaas to induce torrential rainfall

Rains have already started in the coastal parts of Odisha and West Bengal. However, heavy falls with thunder and strong winds will cover the rest of Odisha, West Bengal and adjoining states on Wednesday. Torrential rains in excess of 30-40 mm per hour are forecast in some parts of northern Odisha from early hours on Wednesday till night. The severe rain activity will move northeastward and affect Bihar, Jharkhand and adjoining Chhattisgarh on Thursday.

NDRF makes highest-ever deployment to Odisha

In line with the predictions from the IMD, the NDRF has made an unprecedented and highest-ever deployment of personnel in Odisha in the preparedness of Cyclone Yaas, says director-general Satya Narayan Pradhan. As many as 52 teams have been mobilised this time as against 50 teams deployed in May 2019 during Cyclone Fani. An additional 45 teams have been stationed in West Bengal to mitigate the impacts of Cyclone Yaas, said SN Pradhan.

The rough weather induced by Cyclone Yaas has electrocuted and killed 2, and damaged about 40 houses in West Bengal, state CM Mamata Banerjee has stated.

2.4 lakh people evacuated from Odisha: State Govt.

About 2,48,049 people have been evacuated from low-lying areas in 11 districts of Odisha, according to the state government.

Further, close to 5,523 shelters have also been opened. Meanwhile, 52 teams of NDRF, 60 teams of ODRAF, 206 Fire Service teams and 86 wood-cutting teams have already been pre-positioned in 10 coastal and adjoining districts of the state.

As per the IMD, tidal waves of height 2-4 metres above astronomical tide are likely to inundate the low-lying areas of Balasore and Bhadrak, while those of about 2 metres above astronomical tide could inundate the low-lying areas of Medinipur, South 24 Parganas, Kendrapara and Jagatsinghpur districts around the time Cyclone Yaas makes landfall.

Cyclone Yaas is set to intensify into a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm within the next six hours, as per the latest update released by the IMD.

The met department adds that as of 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon, the system lay centred over northwest Bay of Bengal, about 200 km southeast of Paradip (Odisha), 290 km south-southeast of Balasore (Odisha), 290 km south-southeast of Digha (West Bengal) and 280 km south of Sagar Islands (West Bengal).

Indian Army deploys 17 integrated Cyclone Rescue and Relief Columns

The 17 columns have been prepositioned at Purulia, Jhargram, Birbhum, Bardhaman, West Midnapur, Howrah, Hoogly, Nadia, and 24 Parganas North & South districts of West Bengal. Further, nine columns have been kept on standby at Kolkata for redeployment as necessary.

These teams are equipped to undertake rescue and relief operations to include casualty evacuation of stranded/marooned persons, medical treatment, road clearing/tree cutting, distribution of relief material and associated tasks.

Cyclone Yaas landfall forecast

According to the IMD, Cyclone Yaas will continue its movement north-northwestwards and reach Northwest Bay of Bengal near the north Odisha coast, very close to the Dhamra port, by the early morning of Wednesday.

Thereafter, it is expected to cross the north Odisha-West Bengal coasts between Paradip and Sagar Island, close to the north of Dhamra and south of Balasore, as a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm around Wednesday afternoon.

As per the India Meteorological Department's (IMD) afternoon update, the Severe Cyclonic Storm Yaas (pronounced as 'Yass') lay centred over northwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal as of 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday—about 220 km south-southeast of Paradip (Odisha), 320 km south-southeast of Digha (West Bengal) and 320 km south of Sagar Islands (West Bengal).

The system is very likely to move north-northwestwards and intensify further into a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm within the next 12 hours.
