Ask me anything (about facing challenges): šŸ‘£ Do yours change over time? Letā€™s talk about challenges. Iā€™d like to share what Iā€™ve struggled with since entering content design. Iā€™d be open to answering questions about the challenges I faced during my career change, after I transitioned careers, when I progressed through earlier stages of my career, and more. Almost anything is fair game. If youā€™d like to participate, leave a question as a comment on this post. You can also message me. I'll provide answers in future posts. Hope to hear from you! *** Q: What challenges have you faced in your career since starting? How do you set goals for your growth? A: My challenges have taken different shapes. After my career change, there were a lot of feelings like, ā€œHow do I become competent?ā€ Survival and gaining a basic understanding of my new life were the main goals. To be frank, a career change can take a lot out of a person, especially if theyā€™ve spent a decent amount of time doing something else. Thereā€™s a conflict between letting an old life goā€”and everything that entailsā€”and coming to terms with an existence you donā€™t fully understand yet. Thereā€™s also the issue of gaining the trust of your manager, teammates, and cross-functional partners and, truly, faking it until you make it. In recent years, my challenges have been related to new situations and environments. Iā€™ve had 3 UX positions, and each one has been significantly different than the other. In my previous career, the basic structure of a job was similar regardless of employer. But, in content design, Iā€™ve learned thatā€™s not necessarily the case. As a content designer, your responsibilities and challenges can vary depending on a number of factors: the size of a content design team, the expectations for content designers, whether partners are familiar working with content designers, and the design processes in place. Iā€™m pretty loose with setting goals. After my career change, I value balance more than I did 10 years ago. I also like to take steps forward each year professionally, both inside and outside my company. I think we all develop a sense for when we have positive momentum in our work lives. Itā€™s good to think about what it takes to keep that going. (Thanks to Chris Terterian for the question!)
