Join us in congratulating our graduating ISIers! Herbert Chang is earning his PhD in Communication, which he obtained under the supervision of his advisor, Emilio Ferrara. Q: Why did you choose ISI? A: Although I was a Ph.D. in Communication, my background is in AI, math, and quantitative social science. My research engaged directly with social issues but demanded rigorous computer skills and methodological understanding. Professor Ferrara's was such a nexus, with peers from political science, computer science, and communication. So, it was an easy decision! Q: What’s the most impactful project you worked on at ISI? A: Misinformation and bots during COVID-19 and the 2020 Presidential Election. Our team was one of the first to track down misinformation regarding vaccines and mask wearing on Twitter during the pandemic, and its influence on the 2020 Presidential Election. My focus was on the social network analysis of bot networks – using AI to hunt AI. Our work yielded more than five publications and a feature on the NYTs. Q: What’s the best advice you received when you were at ISI? A: Check Slack. Following graduation, Herbert has joined Dartmouth College as an assistant professor of quantitative social science! Congrats, #grad! #graduation #AI #communication #quantitativesocialscience

Our Winter Quarter Applied Data Science and AI Capstone students recently had the incredible opportunity to visit Washington, DC, and immerse themselves in a professional environment to work on their projects with the guidance of their instructors. This trip was a part of our commitment to enhancing our student’s learning experience and professional development, allowing them to apply their skills to real-life problems in a setting that fosters growth and innovation. As part of a new initiative to enrich the student’s learning experience and enhance their professional development, they participated in an immersive week-long site visit as a component of their winter capstone experience. This experience aimed to provide students with practical opportunities to apply economic theories and empirical tools learned during their education to real-world challenges. Throughout the week-long on-site experience, our students were able to see firsthand the inner workings of the hub of policymaking in the USA, gaining valuable insights and inspiration from working alongside industry professionals. The chance to collaborate with instructors in a professional setting left our students feeling motivated and empowered to showcase their talents and dedication to their craft. We are immensely proud to offer our students such transformative opportunities, and we cannot wait to see how they will continue to apply their newfound skills and expertise to solve complex real-world problems and make a lasting impact in their chosen field. #northwesternmssep #mssep #sesp #northwestern #economics #socialpolicy #economicpolicy #publicpolicy #dualmasters #mastersdegree #washingtondc #wintercapstone #applieddatascience #AI

DST-Woman Scientist at IIT Bombay - Dept. of Science & Technology, Govt of India | Global Ambassador-Academic Research Harassment Prevention Commandos
IEEE President POTUS (Presidential) History POTUS Press @FLOTUS Narendra Modi Andrew Akbashev This is the major crisis affecting the academia Globally. In India, the authority have no courage to take such action steps. They all are tied up in the system.Since, the expert criminals have fooled and trapped the uneducated Prime Minister and all the authoriries with offers to safely execute their criminal plays for publication, publicity, grant, awards, positions etc by dominating the world wide authorities even. They started a National Research Foundation also to execute their fund transfer through a safe channel smoothly without letting anybody know. On top of that, these criminals have spoiled the World Leading Universities normal functionality even..such as, Stanford, MIT, Cambridge, Oxford, Oxford Brook, Harvard, Max-Planck etc. If this kind of action steps has been implemented in India means, some so hyped World Leading Criminal's (Pushpak Bhattacharyya ) 200's of papers has to be retracted at once...! Out of the fear of their third class plays to areange fake publicity only they are organizing this much hidden plays to dominate and stick into power...! Not able to produce “favorable results” in the lab? You are a “loser”. Stay in the shadows of those who can bring cool data to the Big Prof (or even president). Sounds familiar? It's not only about this case at Stanford. It's about academic culture in general: - Keep pushing for metrics. Quantity over quality. Look for flashy conclusions. - Skyrocket your profile. Build your research enterprise. Outcompete everyone in your field. Isn’t it how academia works today? 🤨 Albert Einstein remarked: “An academic career, in which a person is forced to produce scientific writings in great amounts, creates a danger of intellectual superficiality”. Peter Higgs said he could NOT replicate his discovery in today’s academic climate: “Not enough peace and quiet in the present sort of climate to do what I did in 1964”. Wonder about the results of this “culture”? 1. Thousands of FAKE #research articles are published. 30% of all scientific articles may be fake products of paper mills. There is even a special lengthy page on Wiki called “Replication crisis”. 2. Life-draining tenure requirements that fuel the rat race. Why? To ensure the #university ranking and recognition is going up. 3. Most PhDs don’t see themselves in #science anymore. In many places, you are not required to be creative and knowledgable. Instead, you should demonstrate you can win a race. Everyone knows it but few things change. I am happy that Stanford showed courage and carried out investigation. It is an excellent example of HOW to react to manipulated papers and unhealthy lab dynamic. It's just another reminder that: We should STOP focusing on taking “professional selfies”. We should STOP trading our passion for glory. Focus on science instead. #phd #education #engineering #STEM #students

It's the end of the term, and my new module 'Science, Technology, and Society' has come to an end. It's been quite a ride, exploring some of the important topics students will need to confront in their careers, from #AItransparency, to #AIandWork, to AI as a '#megamachine' connecting environment, geopolitics, and work. We explored these topics while drawing connections and patterns with previous #technologicalrevolutions, looking at how the relationships between science, technology, organisation, economy, and public policy were forged and evolved. I was fortunate to work with an engaged group 3rd year students, who handled debates across a variety of topics and contributed to illuminate these topical issues. Very proud of this module and what we achieved in the classroom! #BScBusinessManagement #ScienceTechnologySociety #BayesBusinessSchool
