5W Short Vowel Comprehension Passages

Need practice with answering who, what, when, where, and why questions? Want meaningful comprehension practice with familiar phonics patterns? These passages are the perfect fit for any primary classroom! They are created with short vowel rimes and sight words so that students are able to read them with ease.

This file includes 20 comprehension passages - four passages for each short vowel. See the list below for the specific rimes included with each vowel. Students will color the short vowel words in as they find them in the text. Then, they will circle the short vowel words in the text in corresponding colors. A fluency tracker is included at the bottom of each page so that students are encouraged to read the text three times. This will aid in their comprehension. Each passage includes five questions – who, what, when, where, and why. Students should be encouraged to underline their evidence in the text. Answer keys are included.
