Is it possible to set up an autoresponder on gmail? And (I'm being sneaky here) can I set up an automatic signature?

You can set a Vacation responder or you can use the Gmail Labs experiment Canned Responses. "Email for the truly lazy. Save and then send your common messages using a button next to the compose form. Also automatically send emails using filters."
