How to Be a Los Angeles Frugalista

I don't consider myself to be a die-hard frugalista, but of course I do like a good bargain, especially when I don't have too work hard to get it.

I don't consider myself to be a die-hard frugalista, but of course I do like a good bargain, especially when I don't have to work too hard to get it. Below are some easy resources that I use in my quest for good deals in this overpriced la la land:

  • Goldstar LA - I've used this discounted online ticket service to purchase half-price seats to musicals and plays at The Pantages and Ahmanson Theaters and even for tickets to MLS and NBA games. You can also subscribe to their newsletter and be sent their weekly events listing, which you can scroll through and see if anything interests you. I especially like Goldstar because it helps me attend more cultural stuff than I would on my own.

  • Groupon LA Edition - Each day, Groupon emails one new exclusive, unbeatable deal on the best things to do, see, eat, and buy in Los Angeles. Their daily deals consist of restaurants, theater tickets, spas, classes, sporting events, bars, museums, concerts, gyms and a whole lot more. I haven't been using it for too long, so have yet to jump on an offer, but my friend used it for a discounted spa service in Santa Monica.

  • LA Decostified - This blog is your one stop destination for everything budget friendly in Los Angeles including the best happy hour specials, one time deals, and free stuff in L.A. The people behind the site are pretty cool too and you can follow them on twitter.
  • Recessionista - This other LA area blog is dedicated to savings on fashion, dining out and entertaining.
  • RedPlum - Just enter your zipcode and coupons, deals & more will display. You then can select the ones that are of interest and print them out. This one is mainly for coupons off groceries though.
  • HauteLook - Exclusive, limited-time, online sale events for premium fashion and lifestyle brands at savings of up to 75% off retail prices. Membership is free you just have to sign up and you'll then receive regular sale emails regarding their latest specials. They have also been known to feature deals at LA resorts and spas.
  • RueLaLa - Similar to HauteLook, RueLaLa offers 2-day-only Boutiques, featuring popular designers at private sale prices. It's free, fabulous, and invitation-only. I just bought a Sue Wong dress from here for more than half off
  • Twitter/Facebook- I like to follow/fan the brands that I enjoy and have found that they'll often reward their subscribers by hosting twitaways and providing links to coupons and deals. Also, the best way to keep up on your favorite brands.
  • Newsletters - You can also subscribe to your favorite stores' email listserves, which will often send coupons and specials to your inbox as is the case with Express, Avon, Loft, etc.
  • Enjoy your frugalista finds!
