Benefits of Professional Development for Sexuality Professionals: An Educator's Perspective, with Tanya M. Bass
"As part of my dissertation work I am assessing the professional development needs of community based sexuality educators. In my experience, some conference and workshop planners rarely determine if their offerings will be of benefit to the attendees. Sitron and Dyson (2009) describe the goal of professional development for sexuality professionals as that of gaining a sense of self-awareness through assessing personal attitudes that may influence their practice. They found that skills (e.g., diagnostic tools, therapeutic techniques, education strategies, and preventative procedures) along with knowledge and awareness increase through participation in professional development. I would like to examine the pros and cons of professional development such as conferences and webinars during this talk."

It is important to understand how people experience pleasure and sexual satisfaction with a partner, as these phenomena can impact how they view their relationships, themselves, as well as the role of sexual activities within relationships. This session will discuss a study that was conducted that assessed the social correlates of sexual pleasure and sexual satisfaction, and the implications of the findings of that study.

Toys, Accessories, and Beyond! Expanding the Universe of Sex Ed, with Goody Howard, MSW, MPH
"Sexual pleasure is sexual health. Diabetes, hypertension, menopause, and general erectile disorder are impediments to sexual pleasure that are often addressed but rarely resolved. I intend to put the power for pleasure back in the hands of the people affected by these very common chronic health challenges. This session highlights the ways sex toys and pleasure accessories can facilitate mutual satisfaction and build intimacy in the romantic relationships in a health-focused framework. Participants will learn how these diagnoses impact romantic relationships and ways to support intimacy within the diagnosis using a stigma-free approach."

Motivations against Sex and Number of Sexual Partners: A Two-Study Replication and Extension

"We examined emerging adults (EAs) motivations against sex (MAS) and how these related to their self-reported sexual behavior. Study 1 examined the relationship between demographic variables and three MAS. Study 2 examined the relationship between MAS and the number of sexual partners (LSP). In Study 1, less permissive casual sex attitudes were associated with all MAS. Women and those with less sexual experience endorsed value and not ready motives. In Study 2, those endorsing value and not ready motives had fewer LSP, but those who endorsed health motives reported more LSP. Results hold implications for EA sexual health education."

When Do We Get to Talk about the Whole Man? with Dr. Susan Milstein
Traditionally, sexuality education has focused on body parts, STIs and avoiding unwanted pregnancy. While there has been movement to expand the scope of sexuality education to include discussions of gender roles, relationships and self-identity, this work has not always included men. If it has, it’s often at a superficial level or as something akin to an afterthought. In this session we will discuss the limitations of sexuality education in meeting the needs of men and boys, and possible ways to address this in the future.
