We will consider the nominated items in two installments, with this first one covering the alphabetic range from adult to mom. The winners in the various categories are listed below, with the runnersup included in parentheses in the order of votes cast: most useful: they, sing. In the nominating session that preceded the vote, the special category of Most Notable Hashtag was continued from the 2014 Word of the Year proceedings (“ATNW,” AS 90.1 [Feb. 2015]). In addition, the session attendees approved another special category relating to emergent electronic forms of communication: Most Notable Emoji. Nonetheless, the category showcased the often playful ways that people are incorporating emojis into texts, tweets, and other electronic messages. The nominated emojis will be further discussed in the next installment. The overall winner, which will also receive a full treatment in the second of our installments, was they used as a singular third-person pronoun. The choice was simultaneously old, as singular they has been in use since Chaucer’s time, and new, since the WOTY voters focused on the pronoun’s contemporary usage for those expressing “nonbinary” gender identity (for more on such expressions, see “ATNW,” AS 89.4 [Winter 2014]). Some other nominated items, such as microaggression ‘subtle form of racism or bias’ (runner-up as Most Useful) and hoverboard ‘self-balancing motorized skateboard’ (runner-up as Least Likely to Succeed), are not treated here as they do not reflect usage that is particularly novel. Microaggression dates back to the 1970s, first appearing in the work of Harvard University psychiatrist Chester M. Pierce on African Americans (“Offensive Mechanisms,” in The Black Seventies, ed. Floyd B. Barbour [Boston: P. Sargent, 1970], 265– 82). Hoverboard, meanwhile, was included in the September 2015 update to the online Oxford English Dictionary, with citations extending back to its fictional use in the 1989 movie Back to the Future II, as well as covering realworld approximations of the science-fiction gadget. While much of the news in 2015 was dominated by the early campaigning for the 2016 presidential election, few political items entered the Word of the Year deliberations. One such item was Bernie-mentum (or Bern-mentum) ‘momentum behind the presidential candidacy of Bernie Sanders’, nominated (perhaps prematurely) in the Least Likely to Succeed category. When the Sanders candidacy for the Democratic nomination began as a long shot, Bernie-mentum was used by pundits in a rather snarky manner, akin to earlier political usage of X-mentum for unsuccessful campaigns going back to Joe Lieberman’s would-be Joementum in 2004 (Mark Peters, “Trump-mentum? Bernie-mentum? The Return of a Popular Electoral Suffix,” Behind the Dictionary [Vocabulary.com blog], July 27, 2015, https://www.vocabulary.com/ articles/dictionary/trump-mentum-bernie-mentum-the-return-of-a-popular -electoral-suffix/). But as Sanders gained actual momentum in his primary fight against Hillary Clinton, the term lost its sarcastic edge. A number of items came into prominence as popular online slang, such as af, on fleek, fuckboy, highkey/lowkey, lit, and mom/dad.
