INTEGRATING NEW MEDIA AND PERFORMERS ON STAGE

Mark Coniglio will work with artists to deepen their understanding of using interactive media tools in their creations: directors, choreographers, composers, scenographers and media artists.
For 20 years now Mark Coniglio has worked on the connection of dance, theater and interactive digital media. New York Times has called him „…the pioneer of interactive performance“ and his research has earned him important awards (the World Technology Award 2012  has been presented to him by World Technology Network with Time Magazine and CNN).
With choreographer Dawn Stoppiello he founded „Troika Ranch“, a New York based performance group.
Mark is the developer of  the software „Isadora“, a successful and flexible tool to manipulate media and sound interactively.

In this Akademie Module Mark Coniglio will offer the participants a “provocation” each day, proposing a scenario in which media elements must share the stage with live performers. After an initial discussion about the proposed problem, the participants will work for several hours to explore and realize potential solutions.
The guiding principle of the working time will be “No technique before need.” Coniglio will not anticipate potential solutions for the participants, but instead respond to their aesthetic and technical concerns as they arise. In this way, the participants will be encouraged to seek novel solutions that highlight their individual artistic voice.
At the end of each day, all will gather so that each participant can share his or her results with the group. Coniglio will facilitate a discussion and reflection on the group effort, which will lead into the provocation for the next day.
The particular provocations will depend on the make up of the participants. Coniglio will need to receive notice of the artistic metiér of each student in advance of the workshop starting date, so that the provocations can be tailored to the needs of the group.

Application deadline: July 20th.
