A Marching Band Director’s Guide to Effective Communication with BAND

David M. Marshall, Music Director at Somerset Berkley Regional High School, sought to educate his fellow music directors on how BAND has helped him to discover easier and more effective communication with his marching band. During the New Jersey Music Educators Association Conference (NJMEA), David shared how his life has been divided into “B.B. and A.B.” (Before and After BAND).

Say ‘Goodbye’ to Unread Emails and Dead Handouts & ‘Hello’ to Mobile Notifications!

In the B.B. era (before BAND), David would answer questions through email, text, Facebook, parents, and students. He’d pass out flyers for students to share with their parents, but as any educator knows all too well, “backpacks are where papers are going to die.”

In the A.B. era (after BAND), David knows information he shares on BAND gets delivered to every parent with a distinctly unique “beep” sound on their phones. When that sound goes off, parents know that it’s about the marching band, and know it’s something they need to respond to. David can also check who has and hasn’t read the messages so he can have peace of mind he knows that his messages are being seen!

Build an Event Calendar with Notifications

Events are going on all the time, but having everything in the same place makes it easy for people to know where things are. Group members can download it to their personal calendar, so they can stay notified about upcoming events.

Create a Single Resource for Communication

In With BAND, there’s no need to compile information from multiple sources. Parents won’t have to communicate through multiple methods such as:

  • Leaving voicemails at school
  • Sending emails
  • Sending text messages
  • Leaving messages with the school secretary
  • Sending paper notes to school with students
  • Passing information through other parents
  • Sending a message via the students

Keep Everything Under ONE Post: Announcements, PDFs, Signups, and Questions

In one post, David can deliver everything parents and students need to know. For example, his competition weekend posts contain driving directions, detailed announcements, parent volunteer signups, and handout PDFs, all in one place. Better yet, parents can ask questions about the events right on the post itself, and receive answers from David or the other parents.

Students Practice On Their Own at Home

During practice, David takes videos with his smartphone and uploads them straight to BAND. He uses these videos during critiques, and it also helps students practice at home. David can also share YouTube video links on BAND to use as references.

  • Students can access it at home and practice before the next rehearsal
  • Easy to upload recorded cellphone videos
  • Great for guard choreography and equipment
  • Great for absent students

Travel Easy: No more printing out contact lists or worrying about losing anyone

Traveling with big marching bands(167 Music students and 30 adults) and the entourage is always an obstacle. During a big trip to Disney World, David created a special event BAND. He was able to post trip announcements and chat with people regardless of where they were during the trip.

David’s Tips for starting a new BAND group

  • Invite your parents and students via email by sharing an Invite URL
  • Rip the BAND-aid off! — Make BAND your only source of information coming and going
  • Make your BAND private for only parents and students
