This brief, 12-item scale assesses patient knowledge gaps related to opioid overdose risks. The scale uses 3 factors: Opioid Knowledge (4 items), Opioid Overdose Knowledge (4 items), and Opioid Overdose Response Knowledge (4 items). Items are rated true/false/I don't know, and include statements like, "Methadone is a long-acting opioid," "Trouble breathing is not related to opioid overdose," and "A sternal rub helps you evaluate whether someone is unconscious." The BOOK questionnaire provides a brief and easy-to-administer method for quickly assessing patient knowledge of opioids, and can be used to complement existing naloxone interventions or in settings for which naloxone training may not yet be available.
