On your way to your Bali vacation

Before jetting off to your Bali vacation, there are just a few things to take note of. Being prepared ahead of time will ensure you have the trip of a lifetime!

Visas (updated on May 12th 2022)

Before booking your Bali vacation, it is important that your passport be valid for 6 months from the date of arrival.

At the moment you can enter with a visa on arrival given for 30 days which is perfect for a short holiday and extendable for an extra 30 days for about 880,00 IDR.

Any other reasons for your visit other than for tourist purposes must be checked beforehand.

At the time of writing this article there is another way to enter the country, which is with a Business Visa. Although the law has just changed and the Business visa can be extended up to 150-180 days for 2.900,000 IDR each time (each 60 days after the first 60 days), however check with a local agent. Proof of two doses of vaccination is required for both types of visas.

Money

The currency in Bali is the Indonesian Rupiah – Rp, also known as IDR. You can take cash out at the airport with money changers and will find ATMs once you are on the island (they do limit the amount of cash that can be withdrawn around 1,500,000 – 3,000,000 IDR).

For most restaurants, hotels and outdoor activities, you can use your international credit cards, however most of the local smaller shops will only accept cash.

Sim card

As soon as you arrive at the airport, you may purchase a SIM card with 3G or 4G internet data or locally known as Pulsa.

There will be plenty of places on the island to top up on your data if it runs out. You can look for small shops selling cellphones or any larger supermarket such as a Mini Mart, Circle K or Pepito.

Transport

Check with your accommodation as most hotels will offer transport from the airport. There are plenty of taxi drivers waiting for you, ready to kick off your Bali vacation!

If you are going to the Canggu or Seminyak area the cost should be from 200,000 – 250,000 IDR to Ubud or Uluwatu 250,000 – 350,000 IDR.

For getting around Bali, taxis, Gojek, and Grab are easy to find and transport is never an issue anywhere you are.

When is the best time for a Bali Vacation

Although Bali’s temperatures are pretty stable throughout the year, there is a distinct wet and dry season.

The dry season in Bali

The dry season, which runs from April to October, is the best time to visit Bali. The lack of rain throughout this season makes tourists in Bali more comfortable. The dry season in Bali offers mild temperatures with little rain and humidity, making it perfect for outdoor activities such as yoga, treking, exploring, and sunbathing.

This glorious weather, however, does not come cheap. The peak tourist season on the island occurs during these months. Room rates rise in July and August, so book early to avoid paying increased prices. You’ll often find discounted accomadation costs if you book just before (April, May, or June) or just after (September) peak season.

The wet season in Bali

Bali receives a lot of rain from Noember to March. In fact, there are very few days in January when it does not rain. The combination of humidity and high temperatures (averaging 90 degrees Fahrenheit) means you may wish to avoid these months. Another disadvantage of the rain is reduced visibility at the region’s dive spots, as well as persistent mosquitos. However, if you’re looking to save money and avoid tourism’s busy period, it would be the best time to visit Bali.

Key events to consider for your Bali Vacation

March:

Nyepi is a public holiday in Indonesia and a day of silence, meditation, and fasting. Bare in mind shops and even Denpasar airport will be closed.

May:

The Bali Spirit Festival, a vibrant celebration of yoga, music, and art, located in Ubud.

June – July:

The Bali Arts Festival is one of the island’s most popular events. This month-long celebration of Balinese culture takes place in Denpasar.

August:

The 17th of August marks Indonesian Independence Day (or Hari Merdeka), celebrated with parades and outdoor activities.

November:

Galungan, a 10-day festival commemorating the triumph of good over evil. If you’re traveling for a Hindu festival, keep in mind that Hindus in Bali often celebrate holidays differently than Hindus in India. For example, the Galungan feast is not observed in India but is very important in Bali.

Hotel Tugu Bali

Aiming to showcase the romance within the art, history, and culture of Indonesia, Hotel Tugu Bali’s decor features a vast collection of priceless Indonesian antiques and artwork. The aesthetics blend pure tropical luxury with an out-of-the-ordinary ambiance.

Our favourite part about the hotel is the exclusive cultural experiences only available to guests. You’ll be transported back in time through lavish feasts and banquets of kings from the 14th century, or through humble village dinners of Java and Bali where food is cooked in terracotta pots over wood fires.

Experience a mix of luxury, romance, and culture at Hotel Tugu Bali.

LaLaLand Villa

This villa is a refurbishment of an existing residence, originally a composition of three old ‘joglo’ houses hailing from the neighboring island of Java. The main house has been adapted to your needs with the introduction of mezzanine spaces for added comfort and privacy while retaining the old teak structures and timber flooring.

The house is first accessed via the garden courtyard, which features a large circular reflecting pool and an angular deck. On your way through the courtyard, check out the massive egg structure which is your guest bathroom!

We think you’ll love the eclectic decorations, such as the capiz shell-covered ceilings, rainbow wall art, or a number of the furnishings designed by the owners or sourced from all over the world.

WHERE TO HEAL ON YOUR BALI VACATION

When you visit the ‘Island of the Gods’, it’s only natural that you’ll want to seek a spiritual essence. Experience mind and body tranquility with local healers and traditional ceremonies of Balinese culture and beyond.

Pak Sirkus-Bali Healer

Whether you’ve heard of it through the novel ‘Eat Pray Love,’ developed the interest on your own, or happen to be traveling with a painful injury, the experience of a traditional healing ritual is something we highly recommend while in Bali.

A local celebrity of healing, Pak Sirkus (not circus) practices out of his home, where he joyfully greets locals and foreigners alike. Using natural oils and wooden sticks to determine your body’s pain points and areas in need of healing, this sacred ritual is a unique and restorative encounter.

There is no schedule or modern contact information for Pak Sirkus, he simply starts healing around 9 a.m. on certain days of the week, and you could see him right away or have to wait a couple of hours. At the end of your healing, you can purchase a palm offering as a donation and show of gratitude.

A SUNDAY ITINERARY FOR YOUR BALI VACATION

Canggu is where expat living and Balinese culture converge on a quaint area of the island. Canggu has something for everyone and is popular for expats to find a permanent base. Swim, surf, shop, do yoga, go to the gym, work in cafes, devour amazing vegan food, meet new people and marvel at epic rice field vistas.

One of the dreamiest ways to spend a chilled-out Sunday in Canggu is by stimulating the senses at various spots in town.

Our laid-back, one-day itinerary for your Bali vacation begins at Samadi Yoga, where you can start the morning off with some Ashtanga or Mysore yoga. Followed by a slow, relaxed breakfast at their in-house cafe, which serves organic dishes made out of locally-sourced ingredients.

Sundays have a farmer’s market that is located right outside Samadi Yoga, which you can enjoy after your yoga practice and breakfast. Open from 9am to 2pm, you can meet local organic farmers and hunt for fresh, seasonal produce, various healing superfoods, clothing, and other fun finds.

bali vacation where is bali located best time to go to travel to where to stay in travelling guide guides travel guide blog trips to vacations best time to travel to what to do in is it safe? things related to visting where to go in how to get to indonesia canggu ubud nusa dua nusa penida lembongan candidasa

Next, hop back onto your scooters and drive through the rice paddies to soak up the beautiful hues and views of Canggu’s natural landscape and make your way to the bustling strip of Batu Bolong road. There are numerous boutiques to explore on this stretch of road, ranging from designer, ethical, boho chic, and Balinese-inspired goods. Find The Love Anchor flea market for various local designers and fun shopping experience.

For colorful, one-of-a-kind designer homeware and accessories, spend some time at Horn Emporium, where you can take your pick from eclectic art, Japanese masks, and inspiring vintage collectibles.

The Offering is a fashion-lovers paradise, where we love to check out the racks and shelves filled with modern and edgy fashion and homeware made by local and international designers.

Don’t miss the 100% certified organic cotton yoga and streetwear WE- AR Yoga Shop. As the leading forward-thinking eco-conscious brand in Bali (and beyond!) it consistently offers innovative designs, delicate color schemes, and harmonious pieces.

After your shopping experience, enjoy a quick bite lounging at the relaxing Beach Garden outdoor patio, where fresh juices are made on the spot at their In the Raw juice bar, or you can order raw sushi, delicious babaganoush and hummus with freshly made bread from Starter’s Lab.

Time then to treat yourself to a blissful massage at Espace Spa, a young wellness spot characterized by elegance and luminosity. The place has a strong philosophy behind the therapeutic approach. There is a collection of treatments for you to try: from therapeutic massages to reflexology, from facials to manicure and pedicure.

Once you are feeling blissed out from your massage or treatment, visit Nelayan Beach, a short walk away from Batu Bolong and its sandy slopes are relatively secluded compared to other beaches in Canggu, making it an ideal spot to relax. We like to end the afternoon with an idyllic stroll near crystal-clear blue waters and salty ocean air.

bali vacation where is bali located best time to go to travel to where to stay in travelling guide guides travel guide blog trips to vacations best time to travel to what to do in is it safe? things related to visting where to go in how to get to indonesia canggu ubud nusa dua nusa penida lembongan candidasa

Our last spot for the day is the Tugu Hotel, a stone throws away from the shores of Batu Bolong beach. The building itself is an inspiring work of art. Step inside and you are greeted with a boutique museum, where you can delight in Indonesian art, antiques, and trinkets.

We love to head upstairs for dinner at JI Terrace. This is an outstanding spot with exceptional Japanese cuisine along with romantic, rooftop views where you can relax, watch the sunset and appreciate the Batu Bolong’s seascape.

If you still have time for the last drink, stop by The Slow, and take a few pictures at their latest art show. And remember there is always tomorrow for a repeat and much more to explore on your Bali vacation!

This is one of our favorite temples in Bali. An ancient purification ritual can be experienced in Tirta Empul, which means Holy Spring in Balinese. Although the place receives hundreds of tourists every day you can still experience a meaningful cleansing ceremony.

LOMBOK & THE GILI ISLANDS

GILI ISLANDS

Just off the coast of Lombok are the pearls of the Indian Ocean— the Gili Islands.

The turquoise water and pristine beaches make the Gilis a picture perfect dream destination for travelers, honeymooners, or anyone needing a change of pace from the excitement and energy of Bali.

The best way to travel to the islands from Bali is to take a speedboat, which departs from Padang Bai, Sarangang, or Sanur Jetty each morning, and generally takes about 2 hours. Other options include a private charter, a plane to Lombok and fast boat to the Gilis, or the longest option by far, the public ferry to Lombok followed by a second boat to the island of your choice.

Perhaps the most charming thing about the Gilis is that there are no motorized vehicles allowed on the islands, so tourists and locals alike travel around on foot, by bicycle, and even on the back of horse drawn carts.

Catch a beautiful sunset, swim with the turtles, or simply bask in the sun. With their noticeably relaxed pace and compelling beauty, the Gili Islands are a must see!

Here are our recommendations for enjoying the best that the Gilis have to offer.

GILI AIR

The island that time forgot

For visitors to Bali, traveling to Gili Air is like taking a vacation from your vacation. Just a short hop on a speed boat, it is one of the three Gili Islands off the coast of Lombok.

Somehow, days turn into weeks on Gili Air. If a slow- paced break from the crowds is what you seek, then look no further.

Gili Air is the perfect destination for a quiet and serene island getaway.
Gili Air nicely lends itself to walking; it takes only ninety minutes to stroll around the perimeter of the entire island, and footpaths also snake throughout the interior.

The scenery from the beaches of Gili Air is breathtaking, with the mountains of Lombok rising above the horizon line. The pristine beaches and turquoise waters provide the perfect backdrop for your quiet and peaceful paradise vacation!

Enjoy a gentle stroll around the beach path of Gili Meno, arguably the most delightful walk on the three Gili islands. Be sure to get started early in the morning, or wait until late afternoon to avoid the intense heat of the midday sun.

Try one of the many daily yoga classes at the beautiful MaoMeno Resort, or treat yourself to a traditional Thai Massage.

There are several favorite spots for snorkeling, and gear can be hired at almost any cafe or hotel.

Try the beach on the Northwest shore; if you get lucky, you might just spot turtles in the shallow water near the shore. If you are on the West Coast of the island, find the jetty that has sunk and enjoyed its vibrant reef life. If you decide to try snorkeling off the East coast, be aware of boat traffic!

LOMBOK

East of Bali sits the neighboring island of Lombok. Though it is similar in size and natural beauty, it offers quite a different energy. On Lombok, you can enjoy stunning white sand beaches, crystal seawater, and waterfalls galore– all at a more relaxed pace than buzzing Bali can offer.

The easiest way to arrive in Lombok is to fly into Lombok International Airport. If you are already on your Bali vacation and looking to visit as part of your stay, a flight to Lombok is just 25 minutes and usually costs around 300,000 IDR one way (about $33 USD). For a much longer trip (around 4-5 hours) you can take the public ferry from Padang Bai

(Bali) to Lembar Harbor (Lombok), or hire a fast boat, which would cut down on the travel time.
