#OPSProud Spotlight

Congressional Art Competition Winner - Omaha South High's Justin Hernandez

The #OPSProud Spotlight celebrated South High freshman Justin Hernandez for winning the Congressional Art Competition, highlighting visual art students from the district. Hernandez received special recognition for his painting, titled 'Nathan'. Hernandez was one of six selected. The competition was facilitated by the Art Teachers Association and supported by South High art teacher Julia Mason.

Omaha Public Schools Hearing

Prior to last night's regular Board of Education meeting, a hearing was held for the public to provide input on the purchase of two properties near the new high school site in the vicinity of 60th and L Streets. The purchase of these properties will assist with traffic patterns and flow. The purchase of the properties will be voted on at a future Board of Education meeting.

Board of Education Action Items

Approval of the UNO Baxter Arena Agreement with Omaha Public Schools Graduations for 2021-2025

The Board of Education approved the Letter of Agreement with UNO Baxter Arena for exclusive use of functional space to accommodate seven (7) high school graduations during the 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025 school years. The two new high school graduation ceremonies will be added in the 2024-2025 school year.

Once the agreement with UNO is finalized, schools will be assigned their specific date and time. More information on the specific dates will be forthcoming.

Important Information for OPS Staff

CHI Health and Omaha Public Schools partner to honor teachers across the District

CHI Health wants nominations of Omaha Public Schools teachers changing the lives of students. Each month, they’ll surprise a Top Teacher nominee with a treat basket for the teachers' lounge and a personal gift card. CHI will draw winners on the last Friday of the month. CHI Health will select winners from three different grade levels across the District.

Anyone can nominate a Top Teacher at CHIhealth.com/TopTeachers.

Next OPS Board of Education Meeting

The next regularly scheduled Board Meeting will take place on Nov. 2. It is tentatively scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m.
