Power Play

Rate this book
Hockey players are off limits especially ... if they’re on your brothers’ team.

The last time Jordan did that, it ended in disaster.
It was easy to promise her brothers she'd never date another one of their teammates again.
Until she meets Jake.
The spark she feels when she spends time with him makes her promise harder and harder to keep.
Surely her brothers would understand breaking this promise if it means following her heart.
Wouldn't they?

Never sleep with a teammate’s sister.

This is the universal rule of athletes everywhere.
Until he meets Jordan. As soon as Jake sets eyes on her, he wants her.
The goalie's job is to see missed shots and failed opportunities on the ice.
This is one shot he's not going to miss, no matter what obstacles get in his way.

POWER PLAY is a flirty, swoon worthy sexy rom-com and the first book in the BTU Alumni series. It can be read as a stand alone. If you like hockey boys, sarcastic friends, matchmaking K9’s, too-cute-to-handle kindergarteners, fierce heroines and swoony hot as puck Alpha heroes, then you want to get to know these cast of characters. One puck head and a HEA guaranteed.

I'm Alley. I'm an Indie author and I write Contemporary/New Adult, Rom-Com, Sports Romances with fierce heroines and their swoony Alpha partners with heart. There's a heavy dose of witty banter and sarcasm in my characters.

I'm a stay at home mom to 3 amazing and crazy minis all under 4yo, a 95lb lab, and let's face it on some days my hubby is my 4th kids... But to be fair I totally love him a a lot. When I'm not corralling my crazy minis I can be found writing the stories the voices in my head tell me at naptime and when the rest of my house goes to sleep at night.

I'm a complete romance junkie. Pizza and mac and cheese are major food groups to me.

Power Play is the first installment in the BTU Alumni series by Alley Ciz. Part hockey romance and part tale of forbidden love, it tells the story of our two main characters, Jake and Jordan. Jake is a hot, talented hockey player, and all around good guy, and Jordan is the strong, smart, and competitive sister of Jake's teammates, Ryan and Jase.

Sparks fly between Jordan and Jake at their first meeting, but unfortunately, there's nothing either one of them can do about it. Jordan made a promise to her two overprotective brothers never to date one of their teammates again. She agreed to their request due to one of her previous relationships that resulted in repercussions not just for her brothers but their entire team as well.

Jordan had no problem sticking to their arrangement until she moved back home and met her new neighbor and brothers' teammate, Jake. Jake respects Ryan and Jase, but he can't help the attraction he feels toward Jordan. At first, he thinks ignoring the pull between them is the way to go, but as time goes on, he realizes that it's impossible. Chemistry that strong can't be ignored, and it's more than just physical.

Jordan and Jake have a lot in common, connect in an effortless way, and feel a kinship with one another that they've never felt with anyone else. Will Jake risk his relationship with his friends and teammates for a chance to be with Jordan? Will Jordan risk her brothers' trust?

Power Play is a slow burning, new adult sports romance with a pinch of suspense. The author did a fantastic job creating likeable characters and meaningful relationships between them. I adored not only the romantic relationships, but the familial and platonic ones as well. There were many side characters that I could easily see getting their own books in the future.

The only complaint I have has to do with the writing style and personal preference. I found the third person point of view took a bit to get used to, and I disliked the way some parts were repeated to get both points of view. Other than that, this was an enjoyable read and a wonderful debut!

If you're a fan of sports romance and slow burns, this one's for you!

Where do I begin?

I love a sports romance! Alley combines humour, emotion and drama to create a fast-paced, fun read that I never wanted to end.

There is sibling banter, over protective brothers, fierce female characters, swoon worthy love interests, hot hockey players and plenty of drama. I laughed my way through this fun read and was left wanting more! I'm so pleased Alley is writing more books about this quirky cast of characters. I want to read about all of them!

I can't recommend this enough! A rom-com that will leave you smiling from ear to ear. I am so glad I found this author! I know she will be one of my favourites.

First let me answer this: is worth the time to read this? More than worth. Why? Power play is Alley's debut. And what a great debut. I like to call Power play -JJ story( Jake & Jordan). Do you wanna know more about this? The title gives u a hint. Power & play, like fire & ice. Play or be played by your fate or your past? But if don't try you'll never know what you could have. Power play is going to give u more than a classic sport romance, where the hero is basically hot as hell and have all the girls he wants at his feet. That's not the case, because this story is focused, yes on the romantic, sweet & tender story between Jake& Jordan, but it's also mix real & original themes, such as family bond and more. I don't want to give away too much, just know this: expect the unexpected from this story. Because sometimes, the angst in it is literally breathtaking.
The characters? There are a few. The main ones, Jake & Jordan and some other great secondary characters which will intrigate you from the very beginning. Now, back to Jake & Jordan. What is to like at those 2? Jordan. She's a really great heroine. Strong, spice, sexy as hell, but she's also vulnerable. I won't say from where is coming that vulnerability, but it's there, always in the shadows, following her.
Jake? Lol. He's oltrageously sweet. I swear I can't stand his sweetness and tenderness sometimes. He's the perfect guy, the boy next door, loyal friend, hockey champ. What I liked the most? His determination to get what or whom he wants. There's no but or ifs to stand. He knows damn well what he wants. From the moment he lay his eyes on JD. And he goes for it. Call it patience, gentleman's strategy, pure attraction, or just perfect match, no matter what it is. Is there authentic, real, deep, uncontrollable.
Get them together? Well they have so much in common but they also complete one other. Overall JJ in 2 words: sweet chemistry.
I mentioned the secondary characters. There's a few. Unique and so intriguing. I'm particularly interested in one of those guys, but I won't reveal his name yet.
Another reason to want to read Power play? You will fall in love even with that matchmaker of a dog;)

Wow what a fantastic debut from new author Alley Ciz!

Power play was awesome. It sucked me in from the start because anyone who knows me knows that I love strong heroines and that’s exactly what Jordan is.

I loved the hero and heroine Jake and Jordan but I also loved the secondary characters, they weren’t just there. They had a role to play and I loved the bond between best friends and family members.

Alley Ciz had me hooked trying to second guess what was going to happen as there was a slight mystery going on in the book.

Well done Alley, a fantastic first book.

I recommend this read to anyone who loves sports romance, a strong heroine and a swoony hero.

DNF

The audio book is 10 hours long. I listened up to 2nd hour and I give up. I do not like the writing style. It needs some editing.
Up until 2nd hour, there is no major plot/ drama in the story and just a anonymous caller in the middle of the night. Miss Ciz spends so much on too much detail but that detail does not contribute into the story.

The chemistry between Jake and Jordan is also stiff. The writing does not help to create heat between them.

"Don't look at me like that."
"Like what?"
"Like you want me to kiss you."
"Maybe I do."

This was probably my favorite part in the book. Everything that had led up to this moment and everything that happens afterwards made this scene so beautiful and so powerful!

Power Play was a great debut book for Alley Ciz!

What would you do if you found "the one" but couldn't do anything about it? That's the case with Jordan and Jake.

I loved Jordan! She's a girl's girl as well as a guy's girl. She just fits in wherever without trying to impress anyone. But, she's been put through hell before and her brothers are super protective of her because of that.

Jake is laid back. He's not a man whore (that title is reserved for someone else in the story) and he is really a great guy to his friends.

Both Jake and Jordan are family-oriented and they have their friends' backs at all times. Their personalities had me rooting for them because they are both so likeable.

There was a unique way this was written. The story was told in dual POVs and the POVs would overlap certain scenes so that the reader could see the scene through both characters' eyes. Usually just a line or two overlap in the stories I've read. In Power Play, there were bigger portions that overlapped.

I enjoyed this story as well as peeking into the other characters and seeing the possibilities for the next story which I'm looking forward to.

This young adult romance has the forbidden romance trope as well as a touch of suspense. I would highly recommend reading this. I think this is going to be the first book of a great series!

Alley Ciz comes at you with an epic debut.

Well written, witty, and emotional, Power Play draws you in from the first sentence and doesn’t let go. You connect with the characters in such a way that you become them, and isn’t that exactly what a book should do?

Page turning. Jaw dropping. Power Play has it all. Sexy hockey players. Strong heroine. And such a great group of friends that I can’t wait to for the next book in the series.

LOVE!!

I am not normally a fan of books written in third person, usually I put the book down. I can't seem to get into books in third person. Oh man am I so happy I continued reading this book. The fact that it was third person was lost on me almost immediately. I was hooked from the start.

Jake and Jordan, are amazing together. Jake was surprisingly sweet. Jordan is literally the girl next door. I loved how they were drawn to each other, the connection they had. The only problem Jake is a hockey player.

Can we just talk about Sean and Carlee for a moment? Seriously loved those two.

I could not put Power Play down. I was so hooked on what was going to happen next, and when it would happen, and how it would happen. Alley was putting the pieces together and I found myself turning page after page until it happened.

I loved that Jake was the sweet boy next door, but was still bad enough to do what needed to be done.

The issues that they faced are real life issues that hit home for a lot of people, from older brothers, to ex-boyfriends. Power Play made me laugh out loud, but also had some series moments to it.

I absolutely recommend Power Play to. It was a fantastic first book for Alley, and I can't wait to see what else she has for us!

In her debut novel, Power Play, Author Alley Ciz writes a sports romance with a rom-com vibe, infused with the perfect amount of suspense sure to keep you engaged. This read is delightfully sweet, romantic, witty, & charming. Expect enjoyable characters, fierce friendships, and strong family ties. Power Play will have you laughing, cheering, and on the edge of your seat.
Jordan is the female character you can’t help but love. She’s smart, she’s spunky, sure of herself, and the friend you’d gladly call your own. Jake is your quintessential all-American athlete. He’s the kind of boy you can bring home to your momma, has a set of green eyes you can get lost in, and fills out a t-shirt so well it has to be wrong. When Jordan and Jake meet it’s nothing but feels and all the sparks. There’s only one problem. After a bad break-up Jordan promised her over protective brothers no more hockey players. Jake just so happens to be both the star goalie, and their team mate. Serious buzz kill. How long can these two fight the connection they undeniably feel? Read Power Play and find out!
I loved every aspect of this book. It’s the light read you want with the love you crave. I enjoyed the strength and purity of the connection between the main characters and the slow burn that followed. Jake was sexy and swoon-worthy, while Jordan felt like my best friend. You can’t help but fall deeply in love with this story, this world, and this author’s voice! If you’re looking for an enjoyable and light-hearted sports romance with mystery and a little heat, one-click Power Play! Enjoy xo

POWER PLAY, the debut NA by Alley Ciz, is a wonderful, slow burn, hockey romance that will give you all the feels. Besides the cute scenes between Jake and Jordan as they fall in love, Ms. Ciz gives a thorough look into all of the friends and players in the BTU world, exciting the reader for the upcoming books in the series. One of the things I loved most about POWER PLAY was the authenticity of the NA voice. The characters acted and spoke appropriately for their age group, confiding in friends and relying on each other to deal with the events of their pasts and presents. A solid start to an entertaining, sexy series!

Lawd!! Jordan and Jake are HOTTTT!!! I love strong women and Jordan is exactly that. I love strong family dynamics, Jordan and Jake both have that. It was a great debut book for Alley. I cannot believe this is her first! So well written. Everything meshes. All the characters flow together. Nothing out of place or confusing. I really fell in love with not just Jake and Jordan but ALL the supporting characters. This is so much more than worth the read. I am so glad to be on the beginning of her journey with her.

OMG! What a freakin awesome debut novel by Alley Ciz! This book had it all. It was funny and sexy and serious and emotional. Like it had everything! Her character development and descriptions were so on point! I could totally see in my head who was who, and let me tell you HOLY HOT BISCUITS Y’ALL!! 🔥🥵🧡Seriously 💜 I loved the dialogue between the main characters, Jake and Jordan. It wasn’t a “hello your hot” and then immediate bedroom scene. She took her time building up to that. The attraction was there the whole time, so that was fabulous, but she kept you waiting for it! It was like a gift you knew was on the way , you just didn’t quite know when it would arrive. I.Loved.That!! The secondary characters were all so lovable. I want to be BFF’s with everyone in that book! Too bad I’m semi-old( compared to a bunch of college kids 😉)because I could totally see myself hanging out with all of of them. I thought the author did a great job at touching on a serious subject that happens more than we probably know or even want to think about and she handled it in the best way. It was great in the story. It added some drama, a little suspense, but also bringing always needed awareness to the subject(don’t want to give spoilers). I can’t wait to read her next book in the BTU series. This is book one, but is a stand-alone with an awesome HEA! This author is definitely one to read!! She is starting off amazing out of the gate! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️♥️

Hockey Players
Drama
Amazing Supporting Cast
Hidden Relationship
Witty Banter
Alpha Men
Did I mention Hockey Players?
🏒
Jordan promised her brothers that she would never again date one of their friends and Hockey teammates. When she made this promise she was not expecting Jake.
🏒
Jake, the goalie. Jake the green eye Alpha man. Jake who isn’t scared of her Brothers or her past. Jake who wants her. Jake who has dimples. Jake who likes transformers. Jake who fits with her. 🏒
Jordans past is.... complicated. Just when she thinks it is done and over with it hits again. However her past was also not expecting Jake.
🏒
Enjoy this slow burn, debut sports romance of Alley Ciz. She writes strong females, and devilish males. She knows her stuff with sports, which makes the book all the more enjoyable! Her characters literally pop off the pages/screens as they even all have their own Instagram accounts.
🏒
The supporting cast were just as entertaining as the Main Characters. They were not written to just been thrown in. In fact, one of my favorite side couples come from this book. I can not wait to see where these group of friends go!
🏒
Enjoy the laughs, the suspense, the sports, and the romance in Power Play. 🏒

What an awesome debut novel and a fantastic way to start a series.

Let me be completely honest here: sports' romances are not something I usually find myself reaching for and I also tend to avoid books written in the third person; Power Play is both, and I'm so freaking happy I gave it a try.

The story hooks you immediately and soon after, I was so into the narrative that I forgot all about that particular pet peeve of mine.

I love these characters and I do mean all of them.

This book is centered around Jake and Jordan, but Alley Ciz makes such a great job of introducing secondary characters and making them likable, funny and interesting, that now I just need them all to have a book of their own.

I'm particularly excited to read about Tucker and Skye, I mean... duh.

And Dex?
That's how good Alley is: we only read a small bit about him and bum! - here I am, dying to know all about him.
Typical me to always be intrigued by and atracted to the secretive ones.

And I need to keep up to date with Sean and Carlee adventures. They are the cutest. Thing. Ever.

But back to Jordan and Jake: one of the many things I enjoyed about their story is that it felt real; It wasn't rushed.
They had issues to deal with like every other couple. Every choice made sense from that perspective.

Jake is swoon worthy beyond belief: the perfect mix of sexy and sweet.
Jordan is the girl that feels like one of the guys, is loyal to a fault and has a group of friends that you can't help but envy.

Alley Ciz created this world that makes you want to just jump in and have a fun time around the boys and girls.
I'm really curious about what's coming next in this series and you can bet I'll be checking it out.

*Contains no spoilers* where do I even begin? If you love sports romance, brothers best friend, sexy men, characters that you want to be friends with in real life and the cutest 5 year old siblings then this is the book for you. Alley had me on the edge of my seat at moments, swooning over the guys and laughing till tears were running down my eyes. Her characters are very relatable and I can see myself in them especially since both the main character and I have how I met your mother ringtones. The chemistry between Jake and Jordan is H-O-T!🔥🔥

Be sure to follow our favorite BTU characters on instagram, it only makes you fall more in love with them and give some good laughs. Alley’s writing gives us points of view from both main characters throughout the book which is great because when reading I am often wondering how the other character might reAct to a situation and in Power Play, The author provides that.

bravo! I can’t wait for more❤️

This book was amazing!! From the very beginning I was drawn in. Great detail paid to the setting and characters, as you read you can picture each characters. You feel their emotions come to life in you when reading. This is a real emotional book when the characters are going through a rough time you want to be there with them holding their hands and when they are in a smooth patch you want to be hanging out with them partying because the characters are very likable and well written. I finished this book within 24 hours of receiving it because I just couldn't put it down. Even the supporting characters are written with detail. I can't wait to see what come next for them. Excited to see how each of their stories play out and hopefully we will get to see some more Jake and Jordan in future books.

What is there to say about Power Play other than WOW?! Alley Ciz is an amazing new author who has totally blown my expectations out of the water. It’s honestly hard to believe that Power Play is her debut novel.

I’ve never been so invested in a set of characters. Alley has a way of creating a world that makes you feel like you’re a part of. Jake and Jordan have a magnetic pull even though they both know that they shouldn’t. Add in a couple more hot hockey players, cute younger siblings, a matchmaking dog, and you’ve got the recipe for perfection. I love love loved reading their story.

I’m expecting great things from Alley Ciz and absolutely cannot wait for the rest of the series. Power Play is a must read for all lovers of love!

So this is a first book from this author and when I read the blurb it sounded like something I would love. And I am enjoying the story and loving the characters. I seriously think this author could become one of my favourite reads if this series continues how I think it's going to and as the authors writing skills continue to improve.

Way back when, I remember reading an amazing book where the author said show don't tell and every now and then when I read a book that I feel is talking at me not to me that always pops in my head. Now don't get me wrong it isn't a bad thing per say it just takes me a bit to get into the flow of things.

This book is told in dual point of view which I love. I did find it a little tedious that when we swapped points of view we saw the previous scene from the second person's perspective. Personally this made the story drag a little. I just want to know what's going to happen next not go over the fact it's raining.

The story was somewhat predictable but it was well told and kept me invested. I really loved the characters, both the main characters were awesome and I really wanted to see them get everything they deserved. I was absolutely dying to see how things were going to happen and I couldn’t wait to see how her brothers were going to react to the relationship. I really enjoyed the secondary characters as well and I am hoping to see a lot more of them and look forward to being introduced to some new hockey players.

I really can’t wait to read the next book in the series.

What a wonderfully sexy debut

I was lucky enough to get an early copy of this and it was so great! Seriously J&j are life! They are so cute together. It starts off they know they can't have each other and they try to deny they want each other. But sometimes you can't deny what the heart wants. No spoilers but you need this in your life. If you love hockey romances and slow burn, you will love Alley's debut Power Play.

Power Play, the first book in the BTU Alumni Series by Alley Ciz is a 5 Star Read for 2019! I can not believe this is the first written and published book by Alley. It is one of the most well written flowing books i have ever read! If you love a good Rom- Com, and a good sports romance, then this is the book for you!
Que Jake, the perfect book boyfriend, and Jordan, the strong, perfect female lead. The chemistry between these two characters from the beginning of the book is off the charts! They try, but can not deny their connection. Jordan has a strict 'no dating her brothers teammates' promise that she made with her brothers after events that happened with her ex. Jake however, does not care. He knows that Jordan is special, so he continues to pursue her. He is sweet and attentive, giving her the space she needs, but always being there for her at the drop of a hat, and sparking that hot chemistry between them.
One thing that i loved about this book is the supporting characters were just as amazing as the main characters! They were funny, and each had their own back story, that i would love to know more about!
This book was full of sweet romantic moments, hot steamy scenes, and funny moments that kept me intrigued and wanting more!
Finally, Alley draws the whole book together into an epic conclusion in the Bonus Epilogue making for one of my Top reads of 2019. I look forward to reading more books by her!!

Ha! This book wasn’t even on my radar but one of my girls got in touch with me if I would be interested to give this new author a chance with her debut book!!! Yeah I’m happy I did... I’m not even going to touch any writing criticism kind of thing because it’s an arc and it’s still in editing mode when I got this.

But the characters??? Absolutely loveable, likeable, swoonable?? Lol (add it to the dictionary) - etc etc... the story wasn’t rushed - a little slow burn but I like the build up of it! The main characters ‘Jake and Jordan’ are awesome together! Jordan is your no non sense heroine who is just super chill and holds everyone’s hearts. She’s just someone who is loved by so many people... especially her brothers... Jake though!! His sweet character spoke volume of how he balances out Jordan’s craziness. I loved reading ‘about’ the characters... including the secondary characters - amazing bunch and you’d want to be in their crowd as well...

I’m not even going to touch what happens and where the story takes you but give this debut book a chance. One click when it comes out!!!

I forced Alley into being my friend so that I could get an ARC. Sorrynotsorry lol

Power Play was unlike any other hockey book I've read. It focuses more on summertime, and the forbidden romance Jordan and Jake face. It was a sweet romance full of funny moments with the secondary characters often stealing the show. (I'm looking at you, Tuck.) The guys are all swoon-worthy. The romance between Jordan and Jake is a slow burn since they can't have each other. When it finally gets down to business its really sweet. ♥
All in all an excellent debut for Alley! Can't wait for the next installment.

I received an advanced copy of this book below is my honest review.

I was sucked in by the blurb for this book.

I really struggled with the 3rd person writing. This made it very difficult for me to read and connect with the story. I found it difficult to be sure who was talking at what time and had to reread alot. I found parts of it repetitive which took away from the story. I understood the wanting to give both pov of a scene but was too much having one after the other.

The story itself was good It was mostly the writing style that put me off which is completely a personal preference.

One heck of a debut novel. I love a good sports romance and this does not disappoint. It has romance, drama, suspense and of course hot hockey players. The story had me intrigued from the beginning and finished reading within a few hours. Couldn’t put it down. This is going to be a fantastic series and I cannot wait to see how she develops the characters and continues with their stories. A must read!!!
