I received a copy of this book through some free giveaway, from a group in goodreads.

I put the book down, because there were already grammatical errors on the starting chapter.
The plot of the story is wobbly, like it needs to be edited more.
There were conversations between the main character and her best friend that were too confusing. And they keep repeating phone, as if it was their topic.
There was no character development.
And the story is plainly rushed. Poorly constructed.

Considering the lenght of this short novella (41 pages), I don't have a lot to say about it. I wasn't aware it was a book about humans turning into zombies because of a dangerous virus. I enjoy some books in that same genre (the Flesh series for example) but here it was really fast and there wasn't much of a world building (except for her parents who told her what was going on) and it felt like things where coming from nowhere (unrealistic). The idea of going to a camp faraway from the house to be safe had potential but honestly, I don't think I would have gone there without knowing the exact reason why it was safe there and not here. I didn't really connect with the characters either (Camryn and her best friend).

Runaway ends with a little cliffy but it wasn't a surprise since it's written in the blurb "Camryn is not human." Mmh, I'm just not sure the story interested me enough to read the next part.

*I was given a copy in exchange for my honest review.*

Well that ended far too quickly! Runaway is a short novella, coming in at only about 30 pages, but it is jam-packed with action. From the very beginning it grabbed my attention.

I rubbed my neck for the third time since I sat down in the wooden chair. I thumbed through the
pages again, still not focused on the words. I felt a presence, like someone was watching me, but when I
looked behind me I didn’t see anyone.

Camryn is an only child from an upper-middle class family. She lives a normal life where her biggest concern is finding the perfect dress for homecoming...that is until her parents tell her something that is going to forever change her life.

There's a virus, Tilerrea, spreading rapidly and there is no cure. Her parents, who are scientists, had been working for years with the government to find a cure but had failed. They tell her that she is "special" and that she needs to pack up and, with her best friend, Kiley, travel to Camp Silverlake, a place she spent her summers at until she turned fourteen.

Camryn's parent's bugged me. They were infuriatingly vague.

-Hey there's this virus and it's killing off the population, but of course you havne't heard anything about it because the government kept it very hush, hush. But now it's spreading like crazy so you have to GO. GO NOW. No, we aren't coming with you. Because we're not. JUST GO.

-We won't tell you what the symptoms or how to identify the infected, but you have to kill them. Oh, and they could be infected for up to six hours before they show symptoms. Good luck with that! Kthxbai!

-You're sooper speshul but we won't tell you why. There's just NO TIME. We wasted it all while we were waiting on Kiley and her parents to get here. YOU MUST GO. This may be the last time we ever see you, but you've had enough information for tonight.

UM WHAT? You're never going to see your daughter again but you're going to send her off without all the information?

description

Okay, so after that riveting conversation, the girls head towards Camp Silverlake in Virginia. This is where the story starts to really come together and get goooooooood. I'm not sure when it happened, but Camryn tells Kiley that The Sick (I guess that's their official name?) have black eyes and their skin is falling off.

Sounds like zombies! Hell yes!
description

After a couple of hours the road starts to get cluttered with abandoned cars, some were even left running. They have to slow down to weave around the cars and come upon a group of "ten or so" Sick people surrounding another car and person, and Camryn puts the car into park.

WTF?! How can you say you have watched "all the zombie movies" and think that it is okay to stop your vehicle when you come upon a freaking horde of them?

description

Of course The Sick see the car and descend upon it, banging on the the hood and windows, climbing on top of it. Camryn ends up mowing a few of them down with the SUV to get away. It amazed me how quickly she changed her mind about killing The Sick. She was horrified when her parents told her she would have to get her hands messy to protect herself and Kiley.

"Camryn, you just killed those people." Kiley was trembling, looking back at the lifeless bodies.

I nodded, "I know. And there's a chance I'm going to have to kill a lot more. Kiley, you have to understand that those aren't people anymore. They're dying. Their brains are mush. There's very little humanity left in them."

Well, at least now she finally gets it.
description

About a mile or two away from Camp Silverlake they encounter an even bigger horde of Sick than before, close to 100. While Kiley hides in the woods Camryn turns the headlights on and puts the car in reverse to hopefully draw The Sick in the opposite direction than where they are headed. Camryn knows she's going to have to kill some of The Sick to give Kiley a chance to get a head start.

"I was a murderer. And I was about to find out that I was a damn good one at that."

description

The story ends shortly after that. They do make it to Camp Silverlake but I won't divulge anymore details than that. We end with finding out why Camryn is special.

I really enjoyed this story but wish that it was longer!! I need part 2! Please Ms. Courntey!

*I was sent a copy for review, my thoughts are completely my own*

I actually had no idea that Runaway was going to be a zombie book. As many people know, I'm not a huge fan of zombie books, they just don't work with me. However, this one was okay, I liked it, but not a lot. It was the zombie factor, I'm sorry I just can't get into zombies. But my dislike for zombies aside, this book was pretty cool. In the short amount of pages that is in this book, we learn the history of how the virus came to be as well as the main character and her connection to the virus. Now, it does have that one cliche-ish factor where our MC, Camryn Cruise (pretty cool name!) is immune to the virus because she is part of a genetically mutated generation. That didn't bother me as much as I had thought it would and she ended up being pretty kickbutt. That car scene in the middle of the highway when they first meet the Sick was just a small taste as to what type of moves she's got up her sleeve.

My biggest complaint was the length. I was confused at the beginning because one moment Camryn and her best friend Kiley are chilling and the minute they're packing for Camp Silverlake. However, once I figured out that zombies were the big scary figure in the story, it made more sense and I could go back and re-read the first couple of chapters and really get the sense of urgency, confusion, and chaos. The length though! I felt as if I was just getting into the story and then it ended. So other than that, this book wasn't that bad. I've only read one other book by Brina Courtney and as far as this one goes, it's a pretty good start to a new zombie apocalypse series. If you're looking for some zombie action and want to test a book out, this one is definitely for you. It's short and to the point and the next book comes out soon, I believe so we won't have to wait to long. :)

Camryn Cruise is a normal seventeen years-old girl. She lives with her parents and goes to school like any other seventeen years-old kid. Until one day everything changes.
She has this strange feeling that she is being watched while she’s with her friend Riley. When she gets home, everything falls apart: her parents tell her that a horrible disease, that has no cure, is spreading fast and they want her to go to Silverlake, the summer camp she used to go. She leaves for Silverlake that same night and takes Riley with her. During the trip, they find evidence that the disease is real and that they need to get to Silverlake fast.

Will they make it? What will they find there? Will they be safe there? Will they get answers for what is going on?

This book is a novella part of a series.

I loved this novella. Since the beginning it was very intense and I couldn’t put it down.

Through the years, Camryn has been prepared to the possibility of the disease’s outbreak without knowing. She is a strong girl that has to make difficult decisions during the trip to Silverlake.
I think that Camryn’s parents were a little negligent because they should have given more information to Camryn about what was going on, what to expect when she arrived at the camp and what she really was.

Brina Courtney did an excellent job with this gripping story. It was the first book I read written by her and I can’t wait to read more of her books, especially Camryn Cruise’s story.

Camryn Cruise is a normal, seventeen year-old girl in the upper-middle-class. She and her best friend Kiley's biggest worries are homecoming dresses.
Until one day Camryn's parents sit her down and tell her a secret: a disease has broken out, and it's catching...fast. They send her and Kiley to a secret camp to survive the disease and fight to Keri the human race alive.
But there's a secret even bigger than this disease. And it will change Camryn's life perspective forever.

With Ebola around now, This story was much more frightening than it needed to be. It might be point a 30 page novella, but Runaway read like a complete book. It was very vivid, Camryn herself is a tough cookie, and the cliffhanger ending will keep you on your toes till the next installment comes out.
You might find real things to fear, like I said, with everything that's going on right now, and that's the best part of the book, reading about The Sick and thinking, "Wow, this could be real." It's the clincher that makes this a YA story worth reading.

* I was given this book for an honest review and all enclosed in this review are purely my opinion.*

I would love to so that this is an awesome virus/zombie outbreak book, but I can only say it's good not incredible. The idea of a zombie outbreak due to a virus isn't a new concept, but the idea that there are some super teens out there that can fix the problem is. Camryn is told to head to Camp Silverlake where she spent her summers, which actually turns out to be a training facility for the genetically modified teens. On her route she and her bestie are attacked by infected people, who are aware in the beginning of their illness of what's occurring and begging for release.

This is a short novel that leaves you hanging and I admit that I'm curious as to where the story will go next so I will most likely read the next installment for it. I think with a little editing this could easily get you hooked on it and I would love to see that happen. A little more detail here and there and a continuous forward momentum would make this an awesome book.

It’s starts as a typical night as Camryn spends time with her best friend Kiley. But they have this creepy feeling that they are being watched. Then on the way home they see cars abandoned by the side of the road and little traffic.

When Camryn gets home she gets a huge surprise. A disease from Africa called Tilerrea has now become a pandemic. The illness is transferred through touch and once contaminated; the person has no chance of recovery. Camryn has to take Kiley and go to the summer camp Silverlake. Both girls are having a hard time accepting this but get to experience it first hand.

I loved this story. It’s short and I can’t wait to find out what happens next. I’m very intrigued with her background and I can’t wait to see what happens to Kiley. This is a great story that you will want to add to your young adult list.

I received a copy of this book from Net Galley in exchange for an honest review.

A virulent outbreak of a deadly virus forces Camryn and her best friend to seek security at the survival camp Camryn attended as a child. First, this was a ten minute read for me, and I was surprised how very quickly it ended. It is the first part of a series, and it was really too small of a sample for me to judge exactly how good the rest of the series is going to be. The concept was interesting, and there is always room for a new zombie book in my opinion, but the execution was a bit lackluster. Some of the dialogue was stilted, and I recognized from the start what Camryn had to have spelled out to her in the last seconds of the book. The big reveal at the end was anticlimactic for me as a result. I would be willing to read the second installment, but it would have to live up to the promise that Camryn is really going to be a zombie-slaying machine for me to invest any further.

~~I received this in exchange for an honest review~~

MAN I COULDN'T PUT THIS BOOK DOWN AT ALL. Sorry for the yelling, but man, I really can't wait until the second book comes out. With everything that is going on out in the real world, this book kind of hits a little close to home. What would you do if you and your best friend were sent away in order to save your life? I know that I would be pretty upset that I couldn't take my entire family. But, Camryn is made for this. She knows what she has to do, but the question is, can she?

This is the first book of Brina's that I have read. I can tell you that this isn't going to be the last. This book has got me hooked on her writing. It is upbeat and it keeps you turning the pages. If you haven't read any of her books, you are missing out. These books are amazing!

***I received a free copy of this book in return for an honest review***

I had been seeing a lot of hype about this and was so excited when I was given the opportunity to review it. This is a novella so it is only 41 pages long but when I finished it, I realized that I had no idea when the next book comes out but I want it NOW!

In just a short time, the author is able to set up the story about Courtney and why she is being forced to run away. The story is very intense but leaves a lot of mystery as to what happened and what is going on. I couldn’t read it fast enough to get to the end to find out some answers and it ended on a huge cliff hanger. It was awesome!

Thankfully the next book is out soon because I need to know what is going to happen next!

Brina Courtney sure knows how to write a phenomenal story.
This book may be a quick read, but oh it was so dam good.
If your into zombie stories, you will love this. Now this is
Not typically a zombie story but it is very close. The exception
Is there may actually be a cure for it. There is even an origin
for were the disease comes from, and a name for it.
There is one mor twist to this story our heroin my not even
be human. This is one frightening read, so I recommend not reading
it at bed time. Doing so did not make for sweet dreams.
I'm so ready for book two.can hardly wait till it comes ou

I was asked to read for honest review. Well my honest review is that it grabbed me right away. I don't like the way it ended though. It has a major cliff hanger. I think the book should be more than 31 pages long and I'm not sure if when you buy the book if the print will be like the copy I got but you have words that are regular print than the other part of word is bold. That was a little distracting but all in all a good book.

I received a copy of this novella from netgalley for an honest review. I was a little scared of this since it was so short- I was convinced there wouldn't be any way to pull this off but the author did a great job. There was great character development in the 40-ish pages that were written. The dialogue was very believable as was the events as they unfolded, I also enjoyed how a old idea was changed a bit to make a whole new story! I'm excited for the next one.

Even for a novella this was pretty short, and things happened crazy fast. There wasn't enough world building or depth to the characters to make me care what was happening. The thing that bothered me most was the writing style. It was very disconnected and juvenile. Honestly it reminded me of the Sweet Valley Kids book I've been reading to my kids. I don't think I'll be looking for the sequel. I do love the cover though.

This book is a unique take on the zombie craze. I enjoyed every page and am excited for book two. Anyone who knows me knows that means it's a great zombie tale, since I usually don't enjoy them. The authors talented and unique style makes for great characters, as well as storyline.

Review copy received through NetGalley.
An interesting idea that really merits fuller treatment than a novella can give. But I'm kicking it down to one star because of the description of an Asian character's "slanted eyes." WTF racism.
