What educators are saying

Christamstime is a fun time of year to do and learn things beyond the basics. The Christmas tree has so much history to it and this was a fun way to learn some new things while also bringing some of the critical thinking in play.
We had a school closure right before Holiday break and I used this resource and the kiddos loved learning about the Christmas Tree.

Description

Did you know Christmas trees were once illegal in the US!? Let your students explore the history of this popular holiday tradition while strengthening their close reading and critical thinking skills!

We LOVE to celebrate holidays in our classroom, but it can be a struggle to balance celebration time with education time! That's why I created this set of holiday-themed leveled passages and reading response tasks. We get to engage in some fun holiday learning and celebrating while still sneaking in some really valuable reading, writing, and critical thinking skills!

Here’s what you’ll get in this packet:

THREE DIFFERENT LEVELS of text about the history of the Christmas tree so children within your classroom can have a shared experience with close reading content, at a readability level suitable for their independent reading comprehension. Leveled to 9th grade, 7th grade, and 5th-grade readability. *LEVELS ARE MARKED USING A CODE IN THE LOWER RIGHT CORNER OF EACH PAGE*

Anticipation guide and comprehension activity sheet with answer key
-True/False pre-reading activity helps activate schema and build interest in the topic
-Post-reading activity allows students to reflect on predictions versus facts they encountered in the text, and make changes to statements to make them true

NINE Higher Level Thinking Task cards based on the three highest levels of Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy: Analyze (4 cards) Evaluate (3 cards), and Create (2 cards), as well as two blank cards if you’d like to create your own (or have students create a task). Please note that these are not simple “scoot” type task cards. Tasks include analyzing primary source documents, debating whether fake or real trees are better, creating a social media campaign for kindness, and more! Each task is designed to last at least 15 minutes or more

Accompanying Activity Sheets for use with task cards and a choice board for implementation/tracking of the activities. Choice board, task cards, and corresponding activity sheets are marked with numbers so that you can easily match the task to the correct pages
