1,000 Books Before Kindergarten

It’s never too early to start reading to your child. Reading to preschool-age children builds vocabulary, language skills, and helps prepare them with the skills they need for Kindergarten. In as little as 15 minutes a day, families can build the skills for future school and life success.

What is it?

1,000 Books Before Kindergarten is an early literacy program that encourages families with children ages 0 to 5 to read to their children every day.

Who can participate?

The 1,000 Books program is open to all children from birth until they start kindergarten.

Can I really read 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten?

Yes! If you and your child read just one book a night, you will have read 365 books in a single year. That is 730 books in two years and 1,095 books in three years!
