They can either work as a medical researcher, be involved in the production process of medicines, or work to get the quality of the produced medicine approved by the Ministry of Health.

Due to the characteristic of their work, pharmacists have more options in their work environment. They can work in a hospital or an institution, in either the public or private sector. They can also open up their own pharmacy at home. There is a large market demand for pharmacists, but it also takes a long time to study pharmacy and financing the tuition fee may be another burden.

CREATIVE Architecture combines art and science through the process of designing and creating a building from scratch. The whole process starts with hand-drawn sketches that are put into the computer. Architects then move into a consultation process with engineers to discuss technical issues. Small scale models are constructed before starting the actual construction.
ARCHITECT
As an architect, you can work either in the public or the private sector, or even work as a freelancer. For those who want to study architecture, they need to focus on improving their artistic skills, computer skills to use software such as AutoCAD and SketchUp. If you have ever given directions for someone to get to a new place, helped a neighbor with a household task or listened to your friend’s worries, just out of good-will to help, you can say that you have the experience and a mindset for volunteerism.

Volunteerism may be an unfamiliar word, but it all starts from the small action of helping others. We can also see
volunteerism
in
our
communities.
According to Youth Star Cambodia, there are many people within rural Cambodian communities whose work conforms to the definition of a volunteer. These would include local Buddhist laymen, achars and village elders who are part of development committees, and work for no salaries, for the well-being of the community. In the words of one religious and political leader in a Cham community, “In fact, I am a volunteer, because I do this work willingly and get no salary, and I will probably do it until I die.”

THE UN DEFINITION OF VOLUNTEERISM
Volunteerism can also be seen in all other parts of the world. Because there are so many different aspects of volunteering, the

the activity should not be undertaken primarily for financial reward, although the reimbursement of expenses and some token payment may be allowed.
Second,
the activity should be undertaken voluntarily, according to an individual’s own free will, although there are grey areas here too. For example, school community service schemes encourage, and sometimes require, students to get involved in voluntary work; and Food for Work programmes entail an explicit exchange between community involvement and food assistance.

the activity should be of benefit to someone other than the volunteer, or to society at large, although it is recognised that volunteering brings significant benefit to the volunteer as well. ZOOM-iN: HOW TO IMPROVE OUR SKILLS THROUGH VOLUNTEERISM VOLUNTEERISM AND SOFT SKILLS Although volunteerism starts from the willingness to help others, the UN definition of volunteering also admits that volunteering brings significant benefit to the volunteer as well. Here are some real stories from volunteers who were able to develop themselves through volunteering.
Vannthorn
is a university student studying physics. He finds joy in making community development happen. “I feel happy meeting new people and helping them solve problems in community.” Vannthorn is currently a member of the VolCam Volunteer Envoys (VVE), working to support Volunteer Involving Organizations (VIOs) and encouraging youths to participate in volunteer work. As a VVE, he was able to volunteer in large events as an event organizer, celebrating the International Volunteer Day and International Women’s Day in Cambodia. Through these experiences, Vannthorn was able to greatly develop his communication skills. “I used to be an introverted person who is always afraid of meeting people, but now I am not.” Through many years of volunteering experience, Vannthorn proudly tells us that he now knows a lot of people and is confident to talk to anyone.
Savin
is a 16-year-old volunteer. She first learned about volunteerism from volunteers who visited her village when she was younger. Savin is now a leader of a youth club in Prey Veng province. She volunteers to help train those who are poor or have dropped out of school. She collaborated with Youth Star volunteers to find target children in the community and also led campaigns on various topics such as hygiene and safe migration. Through her volunteering experience, she was able to learn about leadership skills. “At first, I had no idea how to lead a youth club. However, a youth volunteer trainer taught me to understand how to do this.” Based on her training, she was able to successfully lead volunteering projects in Prey Veng.

Thailong is a Project Officer at Voluntary Service Overseas
(VSO) who grew up in Battambang province. He was first able to work with VSO through a youth volunteering program to launch community-level projects on education and life skills training. He worked with not only Cambodians, but also volunteers from the United Kingdom to form a project team. Through this experience, Thailong was able to develop both teamwork and problem-solving skills, since working with students from outside of Cambodia was not an easy task.
“English was not my first language, which was one challenge in carrying out the project,” he says. Not only that, some team members did not really understand what they were supposed to do, while others simply sat and did nothing. However, by respecting and understanding each other’s differences, he was able to encourage everyone’s active participation in volunteering as a group. “Challenge is a good opportunity,” Thailong adds.

HOW CAN WE VOLUNTEER?
By volunteering, you can not only contribute to your community, but also develop your soft skills for a better future. Then how can we volunteer?
Start yourself! One way is to initiate your own volunteering activities with your friends. This is a great chance for you to learn about what your community needs and provide solutions through creative problem solving. You can form a team to carefully plan your activities first. Study some topics as a group, such as hygiene, health, or education and then prepare a learning session together in order to deliver the knowledge to the rest of the community.

Join a program! Another option is to look for volunteering opportunities from already existing organizations. One such organization is VolCam, a network of international and local volunteer service agencies and volunteer involving organizations in Cambodia. Reach out to VolCam to learn about many different organizations related to volunteerism as it provides updates on volunteering programs and activities throughout Cambodia. You can even find out about volunteering opportunities through the VolCam network. 12

VOLUNTEER FOR A BETTER SOCIETY AND A BETTER YOU As we have learned, volunteerism contributes to the growth of both your community and yourself. Sokkheang, a Recruitment Specialist at VSO, adds that volunteering can not only develop your soft skills, but it can also change the way you think. She says when youths begin to realize that they actually grow from volunteering, they will start to be happier to always give rather than only to receive. “Imagine how beautiful the world will be if the whole society is giving out help.”

Hello! My name is Socheata, and I am the Youth Reporter for this magazine. I would like to introduce you to a role-model woman entrepreneur who will share her leadership journey with us. We hope her story will inspire and motivate you to strive for what you dream to become.
Okhna Sreat Mom Sophear is a founder and CEO of two companies, SOPHIYA Travel & Tours and U&Me Spa. Besides running her own business, she strives to provide support for society through Cambodia Women Entrepreneurs Association (CWEA). This year, she became Vice President of the board committee of CWEA. She was also nominated by the Ministry of Women’s Affairs to become the focal point of the ASEAN Women Entrepreneurs Network (AWEN). In 2016, she was presented with the Cambodian Women Outstanding Entrepreneur Award from the Cambodian Young Entrepreneur Awards.

Chat with Sophear It’s a great pleasure to meet you, Sophear. It’s a pleasure myself. May I ask you where you grew up? From your successful career life, I assume that you had a very supportive family.
I grew up in Kampong Cham province. My mother got married at a very young age and was divorced a couple years after. I grew up with my mom and two sisters, without a father. My mom was always very busy trying to support our family.
At a young age, I realized that if I want to have something in my life, I would need to do something by myself.
I didn’t know that at all. Then how were you able to own your own business?
Being a CEO is not my first job. As a first-year student in university, I started looking for my first job to earn money as soon as possible. I applied to over 50 companies but was rejected by all due to lack of experience.
One day, I went to a tour company for an interview, and was rejected again, for the same reason. I had no experience. Before walking out the door, I asked the interviewer, “How can I ever gain experience if every company rejects me because I don’t have experience?” Then I told him, “Give me a chance and I will not disappoint you.” He looked surprised, and then answered, “Come and sit down. When can you start?” That is how I got my first job.
Did you also have other jobs?
Sure. I worked at the tour company for three years, then moved on to the airline industry during the year of my graduation. I was a flight attendant for an airline company, but first needed to be trained for three months and then be put on a six-month probation before being accepted as a fully professional employee.
Here, I learned that nothing is easy in life, but as long as you have hope and commitment, you can be strong enough to go over your obstacles. I was happy with my job.

Chat with Sophear (continued) Then what motivated you to start your own company?
Based on my past work experience, I decided to create a travel agency. Most of my friends, even some in the tourism industry, told me that it was too late. They asked why was I starting now when everyone else was closing their business. They all said I would fail. But I told myself, “I am still young!” And you managed to succeed in your career as a CEO of two companies!
What do you think are some of the merits of being an entrepreneur?
The biggest merit is that you are able to contribute back to the growth of people and society. Entrepreneurship and business are two different things. Business is something you do to earn money for your stomach. Being an entrepreneur means that you are willing to take risks for a greater cause. It also means you are willing to invest your time and capital with the people around you, for example, for capacity building and other trainings.
Have there been challenges as a female leader until now?
I believe that women are given extra work, as the world deems them to born with obligations such as daughter, wife, mother. These obligations stay with you even when you are working outside. You are expected to take care of everything smoothly, both at work and home, which can be a huge challenge.
Lastly, what do you want to tell youth who want to run their own business?
Running a business is not simply doing something that one necessarily likes. It’s about investing in what the market likes instead. Before jumping into entrepreneurship, ask yourself if you have the right skills to keep up with market demands. Study current trends and keep being up-to-date.
Also, be brave to start from scratch. If you want to have a coffee shop, you must at least be employed in the coffee industry. Learn how to make coffee first and then learn how to run a coffee shop. Study well to plant the seeds for entrepreneurship. If you plant, it will grow, and you will reap the fruits. Remember, however, to offer some of these fruits back to society to grow new seeds. - END OF CHAT 16

It is always exciting to dream about our future job. But we sometimes get too excited that we forget to consider one important thing: our rights at work! When entering the labour market for the first time, young people tend to accept any job to gain work experience. They even end up working for low wages under difficult conditions. But did you know that we have our rights to demand appropriate wages and better working conditions? Through our group activities, let’s find out what is a fair workplace.
