“Create a place where your child can study and engage in learning without being surrounded by distractions.”

As we have looked at the topic of distraction and focus over the last few weeks, I am sure many have asked the question, what can I do for my kids? How can I help them develop the important skill of focus? Here are just a few tips on teaching and developing focus:
  • Distraction Free Space: Create a place where your child can study and engage in learning without being surrounded by distractions. Even if they need a tech device to do the work, there are numerous ways to remove the distractions so that they can learn to focus.
  • Model It: Your children will never develop the skills and work at improving their ability to focus if they watch us as adults be distracted easily. Put the cell phone away when having dinner or when your child comes to talk with you.
  • Be Intentional: As parents we must be intentional in teaching our kids how to focus in today’s world. There are many articles, books, websites, apps, even games that help teach students how to focus.
  • Chunk It: Help your child learn to achieve large goals by breaking them up into smaller ones. Have them chunk the work into smaller steps and then have them take a break when they have completed them.
  • Rest, Sleep, Play: As human beings our children need time to rest, they need to get an appropriate amount of sleep, and they need to have the opportunity to play. Without these the ability to focus diminishes greatly.
Have a great weekend,

Letter of Gratitude by Chris Lim
Chris Lim의 감사 편지
Chris Lim的感谢信

Words cannot begin to express the last few weeks nor summarize my heartfelt gratitude for the last 8 years at Dalat. The Lord has me on a new journey that actually began several months ago, and looking back, God had already ordered my steps. Before the fall break, I had routine surgery with no expected complications besides needing some weeks off work to recover.

During my recovery, I went for a follow-up appointment and received a diagnosis of leiomyosarcoma (cancer of the smooth muscle tissue). Upon the advice of amazing doctors here in Penang, the best course of action is to receive treatment in my home city, Toronto, Canada, where there is a sarcoma clinic that specializes in this type of cancer.

Dalat has been a wonderful community and family to me over the past several years. For many of you, I’ve had the honor and privilege of teaching your children and growing with them. For others, living in this community and developing life-long friendships is what I will take with me as I prepare to leave. I am truly humbled and my heart is so full as I prepare to leave you all. I give thanks to God who has shown me I am not alone in this journey, I know I am loved.

Thank you friends for your prayers, your support, and most of all your love. I am hopeful this is jumpa lagi, may God be glorified in the journey he has me on.

Chris Lim

 Middle School Service Learning Day
중학생 학습 봉사의 날
初中部侍奉学习日

At Dalat, we highly value education for life, defined as an education that goes far beyond pure academics. We hope to train the next generation to be people of character, integrity, and compassion. We prepare them to make a positive impact on the world, whatever their career choice and wherever they live. This value, partnered with the vision for our students to know God and impact their world for His glory, is the foundation for the service-learning opportunities that students have in all grade levels.

In middle school, these opportunities are in the form of service learning days one day each semester.  Middle school Bible classes select the community service projects. Next Wednesday, November 6, these projects will take us around Penang to bless these communities. Some students will perform a concert, others will teach children or visit with the elderly, and some will do physical work in a place of need. While this is a wonderful opportunity to help others, our other primary goal is to impact the lives of our own students. They learn the value of serving others, the needs in the community, and their responsibility as citizens of the world to care for others.

Full details and permission slips will be sent home with students sharing the specific project your child will participate in. If you have any questions, please contact their Bible teacher.

Meals of Hope Charity Concert Raises RM39,000 for Students in Nepal
네팔 학생들을 위한 희망 자선 콘서트 RM 39,000 모금
希望之餐慈善音乐会为尼泊尔的学生筹资RM39000

The Meals of Hope Charity Concert with the KL Camerata was a resounding success last weekend, bringing Vivaldi and more to the hearts of the audience, and enough money to provide meals for Shree Bachishwor Primary School for the next seven years (RM39,000).

Dalat music students had the opportunity to work with the greater Penang community to  learn experientially how music can be used as both a vehicle for social justice and for aesthetic transformation. Many thanks to everyone who supported the event and enjoyed the music.

 Elementary Students Name the
New Playgrounds
초등학생들이 새 운동장에 이름을 지어주었습니다
小学部学生为新的游乐场命名

Those beautiful new playgrounds that the 2018 Annual Fund helped to build now have new names, thanks to our Elementary students! The playground in the Elementary courtyard is The Treasure Ship submitted by both P4 Gold (Mrs Bok) and Kindergarten Blue (Mrs. Pham). The second playground near the Middle School is now called Eagles Island, thanks to Grade 3 Gold (Mrs. Johnson). Our youngest students “voted” with their ringgit, and together they made a big difference for our school, raising RM1,480 toward the 2019 Annual Fund. Thank you, elementary students!

Why do we invite students to give during Annual Fund? It’s because we want them to understand the personal responsibility that is inherent in being a member of a community. Everyone can do something, everyone can help, and everyone can celebrate! There is pride of ownership where every student can say “I helped make this possible!”
