Deconstructing Coloniality in Design and Research

Colonization is an ongoing and deeply entrenched process that continues to affect our world and has pervasive implications in design and research. From the way we conceptualize the world and understand research, to the way we design and share solutions.
In this session, we will delve deep into the concept of coloniality within "modern" design and research. Beginning with an introduction to the 9 building blocks of coloniality, participants will gain insights into the nuanced ways that coloniality emerges within our practices. Through specific examples and case studies, we will highlight how principles such as extraction, Eurocentric intellectualism, and centralization of power show up in the work we do as designers and researchers.
By embracing relational principles, we will share how design and research practices can be transformed to challenge the status quo and be centered around agency, care, dignity, and reciprocity. We will offer thought-provoking reflections and creative prompts for participants to explore their own relationships with coloniality and cast visions for decolonized and liberated futures.
Accessibility: This session is offered through Zoom with automated closed captioning in English. We will not have ASL for this offering. We are happy to offer visual descriptions as needed.
