Fairview – Successful Symbiosis of Innovation and Tradition

Having been founded at the Cape in 1693, the Fairview winery at the foothills of the Paarl Mountains was one of the very first wineries to be established. Since 1937, it has been owned by the Back family and is currently being run by the third generation – and quite successfully, to say the least. Experimenting with lesser-known grape varieties allows for innovative creations that are closely linked with tradition. Environmental protection and sustainability are crucial factors when it comes to the production of the fruit-dominated wines.

Anthony de Jager

Before his job as winemaker, Anthony de Jager worked as a quality control inspector and this work made him visit most of the wine producers at the Cape. The experience that he gained this way gave him the idea to pursue a career as a winemaker. This is why Anthony enrolled for the disciplines Wine Cultivation and Oenology at the Elsenburg Agricultural College in Stellenbosch and graduated in 1989. Afterwards, he started working as an assistant winemaker at the Boland Co-operative in Paarl. Two years later, he was appointed winemaker at the Boland Daljosfat cellar. During that time, Anthony got married to his wife Brenda who then worked at Fairview. Anthony decided to move to Fairview and has been the winemaker of the estate since December 1996. Since then, he has witnessed significant changes – of the South African wine industry in general and at Fairview in particular – in a relatively short amount of time, not least because he was part of some pioneering steps of Fairview, for example he played a part in grape varieties such as Mourvèdre, Tannat or Petite Sirah being cultivated at the Cape and rediscovered the old varieties Grenache and Carignan. He seems to have inherited his pioneering spirit from his ancestors: the Rabbolinis came as Italian silk farmers to South Africa and took the difficult route via the Homtini Pass. In the language of the Khoikhoi who lived in southern Africa when the first Europeans arrived, ‘Homtini’ translates to ‘difficult passage’. As they did not find any mulberries in South Africa and could hence not work in their profession anymore, the Rabbolinis turned their attention to wine cultivation – Anthony de Jager followed in their footsteps and dedicated a red wine to his ancestors with the Fairview Winemaker’s Selection Homtini.

The Fairview Winery Combines Tradition and Innovation

Fairview was one of the first wineries in South Africa and was founded in Paarl at the foot of Paarl Mountain in 1693. The first Fairview wine was produced six years later. In 1937, the estate was purchased by the Back family and restored. Today it is run by the third generation, by Charles Back – who is always on the lookout for exciting terroir for unique wine creations. Charles Back attaches great importance to sustainable winegrowing, so that the grapes can mature optimally and produce innovative Fairview wines.

The Mascot of Fairview is the Goat

Besides good wine, Fairview has another passion. Land not suitable for viticulture is used as pasture for the goats of Fairview. In addition to wine, Fairview Goats Cheese has been a delicacy on the estate since 1980. But not only the wine and the delicious cheese attract tourists to the winery. The animals themselves are an attraction as well, especially the young animals get young and old alike excited every year. The connection to the animals is reflected in the logo of the winery. The Fairview Goat Tower, the home of the goats, is depicted on it.

Fairviews Great Variety of Wines

The majority of the 300 hectares of vineyards is cultivated with red grape varieties. The noble red products are the flagship of Fairview. Irrespective of this, the estate is particularly diverse in its wine production. In addition to the classic South African grape varieties such as ShirazCabernet Sauvignon and Pinotage, the estate also produces exotic varieties such as Malbec and Carignan. Thus, the estate offers a great variety of wines and innovative creations, paired with a long tradition. Fairview's team of winemakers always succeeds in astonishing the wine lover.
