Hard to Resist #5

The Rebellion

Rate this book
Sinfully sexy rock stars are the cornerstone of New York Times Bestselling Author, S.L. Scott’s Bestselling Hard to Resist Series. The Rebellion is the newest STAND-ALONE that brings soul-searing romance mixed with heartfelt emotions to fans of this legendary rock band.

I met my muse at fifteen. I’d just gotten busted for smoking behind the school gymnasium. She inspired me with her laugh and nonjudgmental attitude and, before I knew it, we were inseparable. Then I left to pursue my rock star dreams—dreams she encouraged.

I got over Jaymes Grenier no problem. I never think about that little bow at the top of her pink lips, or the way her green eyes admired mine. Nope, I barely recall the way she fit so perfectly in my arms when I held her at night. The sweet way she would whisper she loved me has long faded from memory.

These are the lies I regularly tell myself in hopes of believing them one day. Yeah, I was told I’d get over my first love.

I didn’t.

Derrick Masters marked me the moment we met back in ninth grade. He called me over—all bravado and bad boy mystery wrapped in a James Dean-esque package. Dark hair and blue eyes with a rebel without a cause charisma. He was everything I was warned about, but I couldn’t resist. I was his from that moment on.

His career took off almost as soon as he did. I knew it would. I just thought I would be beside him as his partner in crime, best friend, and lover. That’s what we had always been … before he left me behind to fend for myself.

Fend? Fight is more like it.

I’ve been fighting ever since.

Fighting for survival.

Fighting for a better life in a world determined to keep me down.

I don’t have the luxury of letting my head live in the lure of La La Land. His dreams may have come true, but mine were extinguished. These days I fight for something bigger than me, bigger than we were ever meant to be.

When his dreams come crashing back into my reality, is this a second chance at that fairy tale ending or another heartbreak in the making?

So, basically the heroine was left in their hometown to be raped by the hero's friend, while the "hero" was in the big city banging groupies nightly. But all is forgiven because the hero "didn't know." I can't stand when a character is brutalized in any book, but the fact that the heroine was hurt because of a supposed debt owed by the hero, that's when my hatred will win out. The heroine was raped, so it's understandable that she hasn't had sex since then, but in all that time, the hero has been with countless, faceless women, while she was suffering the consequences for his mistakes. Honestly, I will never understand why these female authors put their heroines through so much shit, while leaving the hero an unscathed manwhore. It's like the authors hate their own female characters.

5 *swoon worthy stars*

The Rebellion by S.L. Scott was such a good read.

The writing was well done, the storyline held my attention all throughout the book.
Derrick & Jaymes were likable, relatable characters that I easily connected with.
I loved watching them reconnect and go after their second chance at love. These two truly deserved their happily ever after.
I loved Derrick & Jaymes!

Very Dull :(

I don't know what to say about this other than it bored me to no end. I read the first two books in these series and wether you liked them or not they were definitely not boring. They were angsty (some say OTT), but were definitely entertaining. So I was expecting something similar. But this just fell flat for me.
I don't even have the energy to write a long review, so I'll just say that both MC were extremely dull, they didn't make me feel anything. I neither liked them nor disliked them. After we learned what happened between the characters, and what the h went through, there wasn't much else happening, so I skimmed through, TBH. But even at the climax of the story, the big confrontation with the villain was lame!
I just want to add something. It might be petty to mention, but it's a pet peeve of mine. I hate when authors write in a child character and have him/her talk like a mini grown up. The h has a five year old son, who has very peculiar conversations. Example:

Leaning forward, I ask, “So what do you think about me dating your mom?”
“She likes to hang out with you. She smiles. That’s always her tell.”
"What do you know about tells?”
“Tommy told us everyone has a tell. Mommy’s smile is hers.”

And that's only one example. The 5 year old kid talks like that throughout the whole book. Also, what kind of school has 5 year olds having to work on science projects about blood types?!?! Yeah, I don't think so.

By seeing all the 5 star and 4 star reviews, I was so excited to to get ahold of this book. Needless to say it fell flat for me. I could not get over how stupid the heroine was. And the Hero was a waste of space as well. All the crap that she went through you would think she would never return home knowing that the guy who had raped her was out to get her?!! Not only that she put her child in danger So you have this guy who is in love with you and he is a rock star, think maybe he has some money?? and yet with all that money he could not get a body guard for the heroine? to much of the story was really weak. Cause anybody with half a brain cell would say, The guy raped me I want nothing more of the neighborhood I just left from. But no, she returns head first to put herself in danger. Frankly... I was just done with the book.

"Life can be pretty damn sweet if I look at the bright side. The only problem with my bright side these days is that my head is overrun with memories of a girl I left with a broken heart and out of tune guitar."

Full of heart and heartbreak, The Rebellion is a second chance romance between a sexy, sweet rock star and the high school sweetheart he left behind. Derrick Masters jetted off to Hollywood, running away from one thing to run toward another. The casualty of that war was the love of his life, Jamie, who was left to survive the dangerous neighborhood Derrick had no choice but to escape. While Derrick rose to superstardom as the lead guitarist for The Resistance, touring city to city with groupies to keep his bed warm, he had no idea what his one true love was left to endure in his absence.

"Yes, The Resistance is my life, my future. But in my heart of hearts, I know it’s Jaymes I’ve been thinking about for all these years."

I was completely riveted by this storyline. Completely. Riveted. The obvious second chance romance element would've absolutely been enough to hold me captive. I was pulled in right away, heartbroken for the young love that was cut short, desperate to see these characters, whose lives took them in such different directions, find their way back to each other after years of longing and loneliness and emotional strife. But more, I was completely taken by this unknown torment that had Jaymes ensnared. This story evolves slowly, the events of the past and the predicaments of the present revealing themselves to the reader at just the right moments to allow for a page turning story I couldn't put down.

SL Scott's writing is BREATHTAKING in this book. I've loved her previous work but something about her writing in The Rebellion felt more lush, more vivid, more... just more. I hung on every word. The emotion and the heartache and the sheer romanticism bled from these pages and I couldn't get enough. This story is woven together seamlessly through alternating points of view and perfectly placed gut-wrenching flashbacks. I was brought through the wringer with this book but it was so beautifully done. I truly have a new appreciation for this author after having read this story.

The Rebellion is layered with intrigue and heartache and steam on every page. This is as much a sexy rock star romance as it is an emotional story of second chances and forgiveness. I felt so much while reading this book. Sadness. Anger. Frustration. Joy. I ached for the devastating course these lovers endure, I felt high off the blissful romance that bleeds from each page.  The Rebellion took me back in many ways reminding me of all the reasons I fell in love with Johnny Outlaw and The Resistance while sweeping me away all over again by Derrick and Jaymes' story.

"She’s always been my muse, but now she’s the melody that plays in my heart, the one that made it worthwhile to go back to the start."

A fiercely compelling and poignant nail-biter that exudes intense and dangerous love!

Young love transforms into a lost love that casts a somber shadow on the lives of Derrick and Jaymes. Growing up in an unsafe and deadly environment, the struggles and sacrifices each character shoulders is thoroughly devastating and makes your heart break for them. A destructive life of corruption and violence looms in the near future for them, but what they don't realize is that no matter how far away they are from it, it's still very much a part of them.

Second-chance romances shine light and optimism where you least expect to find it. Derrick and Jaymes portray two strong, resilient, and remarkable characters that have proved second chances are worth the risk. Their undying love for one another during dark times in their lives truly enraptures the reader. Raw honesty and trust above all else can make or break a relationship, and these characters strive to do whatever it takes to make this chance work. A life without each other's love is not an option.

The Rebellion was utterly brilliant! Flawless writing coupled with a profound story line makes this book a must read of 2017! I fell in love with this series from the very beginning, and my heart has grown only further with the rest of the books. The Rebellion shows us how true love has no bounds, and the risks one takes for those that matter the most...even in regards to one's own happiness.

**AUDIOBOOK**

5 STARS

I am in awe of S.L. Scott and her ability to write rockstar romance. The angst and suspense combined with a powerful love story is everything I crave when I start one of her books. The writing is thrilling, gripping and keeps the reader addicted to the storyline and characters. The Rebellion was all of this and more. Derrick and Jaymes are officially my FAVOURITE couple in the series! Jaymes has endured a lot. She is fierce, loves and protects her son and never stopped loving Derrick. She is resilient and a true FIGHTER. She has come through some really tough times. Derrick is the lead guitarist and singer in the band The Resistance. He is not a perfect man and not without his flaws but he is irresistible, swoony and oh so sexy. He loves Jaymes with so much intensity. Reading this book took me on such an emotional journey I never wanted it to end. This is one of my top favourite second chance love stories of all time.

I adored the narration done by Sebastian York and Ava Erickson. The emotion and power in their voices were spot on and bring so much realness to these characters.

"Lovers. Soulmates. Friends. Those three words come with three others--trust, love and forgiveness. They're not given. They already exist between us, baby."

"Just like Andromeda and Perseus, we can outrun our fates"

No one writes swoon-worthy second chance romances quite like S.L. Scott. In the latest installment of The Hard to Resist Series, we get Derrick story. Derrick's story is unlike any of the other's that we've seen in this series so far. Derrick's story was EVERYTHING!! His story is one for the books. It is a bit darker, more complex and complicated.

The road to happily ever after for Derrick and Jaymes was not an easy one. They had to fight and sacrifice to get what they wanted out of life. The ups and downs, the push and pull kept me coming back and begging for more.

Gah!! There is so much I want to say about this book, but I'm not going to. You just need to pick up this book for yourself. I am telling you, it is everything and then some. The Rebellion gave me so many feels and took me on an emotional and thrilling ride.

The Rebellion is not just a second chance romance, but also a story of true friendship and devotion. It is a story about hope and sacrifice. It is a story on the truest of loves and never giving up on your dreams. I loved seeing not only Derrick and Jaymes' story come full circle, but also The Hard to Resist Series itself. I loved every moment of this book and the series it is a part of and will never forget these swoon worthy rockers....

I am giving this book a 4 rating because
I was able to overlook the flaws in the
story and just fall in love with Derrick.

Derrick is the lead guitar for one of the
biggest bands in the world. He did not
get to where he is without paying a huge
price, his love Jayme's. Derrick and
Jayme's get the second chance that she
almost lost everything for, and that he
yearned for from afar. What made me
really enjoy this book was their romance,
the love they always had for each other.

I did not allow myself to get mad about
some of the much weaker plot lines, some
of the unanswered questions of Derricks
lifestyle in the 5 years they were away
from each other, because I believed his
feelings for Jaymes.

This book was super duper sweet with
hot love scenes and 2 main characters
that I was really rooting for. I let all
the other stuff fall away.

I will def. read more by this author.

You know it's bittersweet writing this review. I've actually sat for a few days and have NOT wanted to write this review. For total selfish reasons. Let me explain.

See I buy a book, give it a read, leave a review and move onto the next. With this book I bought it, read it and didn't want to write a review because I didn't want to move on!!!!!

S.L Scott has written one of my absolute fave rocker series EVER. First she gave us Johnny, then Dex, then Kaz (OH MY GOD KAZ!!). And now we have DERRICK MASTERS! The master of my heart & soul. He's perfection. He's raw, flawed, but so, so beautiful and I immediately felt drawn to him and it didn't take long to fall for him! And his relationship with Jaymes.. Just wow.

The Rebellion oozes tension, that intense, passionate tension that burns, oh so good. Something SL NAILS in this book is the way her characters connect after so long. It's not rushed or forced or rammed down our throats, it's built gradually, slowly, made believable and SUPER HOT. Derrick and Jaymes literally sizzle their way through this book, they pulled my breath from me on many occasion, sent my heart galloping off in a wild race and made my soul sing for them. In essence they ROCKED my world.

The Rebellion is my kind of book, the angst, the tension, the passion, the connection, all of it worked so damn well! However, if you're not a fan of that don't let it put you off. Aside from all that The Rebellion is a beautiful, breathtaking, second chance love story. SL has breathed hope and love into her broken, battered characters, giving them a chance. It's so easy to get lost, swept away in the romance that runs deep in this story, the romance that makes you swoon and sigh and just hope right alongside the characters.

I never thought SL would top Kaz’s book to be honest, but she has. She's penned a book that is the best in the series, she's made hard work for herself because I don't know how she'll top this one at all. SL is a rockstar and this book flies straight to the top of my chart!

The men of The Resistance stole my heart from the first book. Rockers with heart. The Rebellion by S.L. Scott gives us Derrick Masters’ story. A story about second chances, hope and redemption.

Derrick is living out his dreams. He is a full member of The Resistance, the hottest band around, with the fame and fortune that come with it. But even though to others he has everything he could ever want, there is something missing. Or rather someone. The woman he walked away from years ago.

Jaymes Grenier let Derrick walk away because she loved him enough to let him follow his dreams. But the horrors that followed almost destroyed her. Instead she rose from the ashes determined to move forward.

I absolutely loved Derrick. He was going through the motions. The woman he has always loved haunted him, almost as much as the demons of his past did. He worked hard to get where he is, but something was missing. He was strong, determined, and loving. He was a bad-boy rocker, with a heart of gold.

Jaymes broke my heart. I think she saw herself as weak, but she was really strong, independent and fierce. She was a momma bear. She was determined to provide for her son and give him a better life.
A chance for a future she thought she had lost. When she loved, she loved unconditionally.

I don’t even know where to start. This was such an emotional story. Derrick and Jaymes met when they were young and loved hard. Inseparable, they dreamed of stardom and getting out of the binds that held them. But in the end, only one got out and the cost to the other was very high.

Reunited by two meddling mothers (you can’t help but love) years later, Jaymes is determined to keep Derrick at a distance for his safety. She is so happy for him and will not bring him down. Her fears and monsters are her own. But Derrick is determined to have Jaymes in his life any way he can. Slowly he brings down her defenses. He gets to know her all over again and spends time with her son. It was so sweet to watch them spend time together.

We also get to see all the other couples from The Resistance and remember why we love them all so much. They stand behind Derrick and Jaymes from the start. I want them to be my friends. They are amazing friends that stick together through thick and thin.

I absolutely loved this book. It was emotional and heart-wrenching, but also sweet and romantic. A second chance at love and redemption for both Derrick and Jaymes. A story that will captivate you from beginning to end.

I give The Rebellion 5+ stars! A must read!

Happy reading!

OMG! How in the HELL have I only read two books from this phenomenal author? Seriously have I been living under a rock for the past few years...

Something I am sure you've noticed about me through my reviews is the fact that I LOVE a good rockstar, single parent and/or second chance romance story and WOW does The Rebellion by S.L. Scott deliver all of that and so much more!

I devoured this beautifully captivating story in less than two hours and was left with the ultimate book hangover. This book was AMAZING and I absolutely adored every single moment of it. Derrick and Jaymes (aka Jamie to everyone else) story was breathtaking, filled with love and a whole lot of suspense that left me on the edge of my seat until the very end. The alternating POV's was perfect for this story and then that ONE surprising POV had me gasping in shock. Let's just say I was not expecting that! And then that ending...

If you are looking for a fantastic 5+ star read (that really should be a THOUSAND star one) then look now more because this is the book for you! Now to go back and read the rest of this STANDALONE series!

Rock star.

This book was pretty good but so drawn out. Found myself skipping pages. What wasn't drawn out was good with excitement and drama. I liked the idea of the story as well. What I didn't get was how easily he walked away and never came back. How he had no problem going from groupie to groupie but she was always on his mind. I don't think either had a great excuse for what happen though. What I really liked was Ace. He was super cute and sweet. Brought a little lightness to a lot of the darker parts of the book. Overall a good read with a happy ending.

Derrick Masters will steal your heart in this terrific story. Being on the road with the Resistance isn't what it used to be for Derrick, something is missing or rather someone, his high school sweetheart Jaymes. Growing up in a rough part of town brought gangs and drugs into Derrick's life and his salvation came in the form of Jaymes and his Guitar, but with Jaymes's blessing he got out and although he wanted her to go wit him, she stayed for her Mom. Five years later they have a chance to re connect and Derrick is shocked at what he finds. A heartwarming addition to the Resistance series, I love how everyone rallies around each other including the meddling Mom's. This story will have you cheering for this couple.

It’s no secret at all that I am an extremely huge fan of The Hard to Resist Series by SL Scott. This is a fantastic collection of standalone novels that are interconnected. I still fantasize about Johnny from The Resistance and I read that book years ago. Don’t you love it when novels have a lasting impact? These surely do!

Derrick Masters and Jaymes Grenier were high school sweethearts with their entire lives in front of them. Together they can make it through anything… until Derrick skips town in search of every musician’s dream. His fame skyrockets him to an entirely different level, more than he could have ever prepared for. Jaymes remains back in their previous life, completely alone to fend off the harsh reality she must face. Their paths split and head off in two very separate directions. This was heartbreaking to read but so powerful I felt like I was there, witnessing the pain.

Even with distance, time, and circumstance separating them, Derrick and Jaymes haven’t been able to get over each other. What they share has a forever kind of impact. Young love can be potent and this is a prime example. Every scene is so dynamic and fulfilling. This is everything you want from a second-chance romance plus another heaping portion to keep you satisfied until this author’s next release.

SL Scott really pulls out all the stops with The Rebellion. Her writing has always been fantastic but with this overly emotional read, I found myself completely mesmerized. What she created for these two exceptional characters is marvelously. I loved every page and once I started, there was no stopping until the book was finished. I’m already looking forward to re-reading it!

The Rebellion by S.L.Scott is a book with so much emotion. Your heart will ache, your head will spin but in the end you will be so happy you read it.
Derrick Masters is the lead Guitarists for world acclaimed band The Resistance. He has it all right now but something is missing. He has a dark and dangerous past he left behind 5 years ago and has never looked back. Deep down though he is restless, tired and burning out. He knows what's missing but that is in the past he left behind never wanting to hear about it again, never wanting to know about his heart and soul that he left behind for a better life that has been his dream.
Jaymes (Jamie) Grenier has not had an easy life. The last 5 years the toughest but also the most rewarding. Working and studying to make a better life for herself so she can have the dream life she has always wanted. Sacrificing the love of her life to keep him safe and live his dream, she fights the demons from their past on her own.
S.L.Scott has written an outstanding storyline for Derrick and Jaymes. You will love the Hot Alpha Rockstar but I think you will be totally captivated by the selflessness and strength that is Jaymes Grenier. It also doesn't hurt to have the rest of The Resistance in this book as well.
Another 5 star read from the amazing S.L.Scott.

The Rebellion is Derrick and Jayme's, a/k/a Jamie, story in the Hard to Resist series by SL Scott.

Derrick and Jaymes have an 8 year history, three together and five never forgetting each other. They have struggled together and apart. This story is about friendship, love, loyalty, and trust and a story that will stay in my heart for a long time to come.

Derrick is a Rockstar, a bad boy from the wrong side of the tracks who makes it big, but not without sacrifice, namely Jaymes. Jaymes sent him away in order to save him, but lost her heart and her soulmate when he went away. Derrick never knew the truth and never got over her. Five years later, he returns home for a visit and is determined to win Jaymes back. One look at her and he knows he made a mistake not coming back sooner to the girl he has always loved, his soulmate, the woman who completes him.

There are many things that will stand in their way, especially one Reggie Rogers who is determined to keep them apart. Can Derrick and Jaymes finally get their happily ever after, or are they destined to live their lives apart.

This story grabbed my heart and never let go. SL Scott is a wonderful storyteller. If you have not read this series, you need to pick them all up! I guarantee you will fall in love with her characters just like I did.

This is one heck of a second chance rock star romance and I had a great time reading it!
The Rebellion is one of those books you can hardly put down and you find telling yourself "just one more chapter".

I fell instantly in love with Jaymes, Ace and Derrick. S.L. Scott makes it just so easy to get attached to those guys. I just finished the book and already miss them.

Reading about how two souls meant being together find their way back to each other was an emotional roller-coaster I wasn't really prepared for.

"I'm in heaven again. Her body mine. Her mind mine. Her soul mine to keep forever."

"Our love story was already set in motion. Our destiny was just waiting for us to meet."

"She's always been my muse, but now she's the melody that plays in my heart, the one that made it worthwhile to go back to the start."

The Rebellion by S L Scott is a truly amazing second chance read. From chapter 1, I was drawn into this story about Derrick, a rock star guitarist for the band "The Resistance" and Jaymes, the girl from his past. The development of these two characters and their storyline was so good I could not put the book down. Derrick and Jaymes grew up on the wrong side of the tracks and Derrick always vowed he was going to get out. He did by joining the band and becoming a rock star. The unfortunate thing was Jaymes didn't and payed the price. Little did she know, she was about to get her second chance with the love of her life. And so the story begins. I was taken on an emotional journey throughout this story. I found myself in awe of their love and I think anyone who reads this book will too. There are sexual situations and a little violence but they are crucial to the story. I would definitely recommend this book because it is a must read and one of the best books I've read on 2017. This is definitely a 5 star read- Julie

I love SL Scott's Hard to Resist Series... and could not wait for Derrick's story, but it was definitely not what I was expecting.

Derrick met Jaymes when they were teenagers, and now they have a second chance at love (all thanks to their moms who did a little medaling). Jaymes has a secret she has been keeping from everyone since Derrick left her all this years ago. She was devastated when Derrick left and fell into some trouble, that has been haunting her ever since.

Now that Derrick and Jaymes have another chance at love, is her past going to come back to haunt her? Even worse for them, is that her past and Derrick's past combined are the bigger problem.

Overall, I liked the story. I have a few problems with Derrick's past and how the things that happened could have really happened.

She's the melody that plays in my heart......

And yes I loved this line from the book! I really loved this series and hope it's not the end. I would really love to see Tommy get his HEA and maybe with a certain guitarists sister just maybe and hint, hint with a wink.
I love how all the books intertwined and you got a glimpse of the chemistry of all the characters. SL Scott does an amazing job of reeling you in and capturing your interest and heart into these characters lives.

Really enjoyed the love that Jaymes and Derrick had for each other. And Ace was an amazing little addition to it. This book had sexy Rock stars, angst, great sex scenes and a few twists that makes you want to keep reading but never end. That is a brilliant job to this reader and makes an awesome author. So check this series out!!

3.5

I haven't read any of the other books in the series, but it's not an issue as these are all standalone.

This was second chance for high school sweethearts, but when Derrick leaves to pursue his dream career he breaks both his and Jaymes heart.

So when Derrick comes back to all he left, can or will he want to leave it all behind? Jaymes was left reeling and picking up the pieces of what Derrick's leaving brought to her doorstep, so when they are reunited can they both put the past behind them and take this second chance they both want.

I don't know, there was something about the story that I can't put my finger on that didn't quite work for me, it wasn't bad, but it just lacked something. I've read other works by this author and will again, but this one came up a little short for me.

So amazing

This book is one for the records. So full of lost hope and love that cannot be forgotten. It's not your normal second chance at life or love. It's truly about not being able to live without the one person you are supposed to spend the rest of your days with. Jaymes and Derrick are the purpose to this life together

So many secrets and a lot of drama, but it all had meaning. There is a reason this story is addicting, and it has to do with the love of a person that you would do anything for, even if that means you are miserable for the rest of your days.

I cannot begin to expel what I felt whole reading this book. I just hope that you love it as much as I did. It is definitely worth it.

S.L. Scott has reunited us with boys of The Resistance; we are reunited with old friends but THE REBELLION is Guitar player Derrick Masters story; the love and life he left behind. Jaymes was the love of his life they were high school sweethearts pulled apart by mistakes, misunderstandings and forces beyond their control. Jaymes thought she was protecting Derrick from the life he was escaping and Derrick thought When Jaymes said leave and never look back she meant it. 8 years later find out if they can overcome all the obstacles that have kept them apart. The Rebellion is a great stand alone, but I highly recommend you get the story where it all began The Resistance. I hope some day down the line we are reunited with The Resistance and their families.

I apologize for my review not being as timely as i would have originally liked. Simple fact is that I loved this book so much I literally couldn't put together coherent thoughts that would express my complete and utter love for it. "REBEL" hot shot, rock star and one of the best men to give me flutters in some time will leave you with a book hangover that I STILL haven't been able to pick something up that will make me forget the longing left in my gut. A second chance romance that comes back with a vengeance will leave you swooning and wishing for more pages. I seriously just hope and pray that there are more books coming in this series. I cannot wait!
